Multiplatform Environmental Initiative on Disney Channel, Disney XD, Radio Disney and Disney.com Features Star-Studded Lineup of Disney’s Young Talent Pledging Environmental Stewardship and Encouraging Other Kids to Do the Same
Kids’ Votes Determine How Disney Will Divide $1 Million in Donations Among Environmental Causes
BURBANK, Calif., May 14, 2009 — The Walt Disney Company today announced Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green, a multiplatform environmental initiative that will help kids help the planet. Disney stars Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato are among the 29 young stars participating in outreach messages to debut on Disney Channel, Disney XD, Radio Disney and Disney.com. The Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green initiative invites young people to join together to help the environment across four key areas: climate, water, waste and habitats. Kids will learn practical ways to preserve the planet, track their collective impact and have the opportunity to vote on how $1 million in donations from Disney will be divided and invested in various environmental causes over the course of a year.
Radio Disney will present the world premiere of a new song from Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana” on SATURDAY, MAY 2 (6:00 p.m., ET/3:00 p.m., PT) during its Planet Premiere feature. “I Wanna Know You,” a duet by Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana and American Idol’s David Archuleta, will be featured in a new episode of the hit series on Sunday, May 3 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel.
It’s all part of Disney’s new Opening Weekend Surprise program, in which moviegoers who show up to the theatre for a 2009 Walt Disney Pictures film during its national opening weekend could be treated to a truly magical Disney experience. This might include surprise in-theater appearances by talent from the film, live performances and more. Moviegoers won’t know in advance which cities, theaters or show times will be selected.
“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to surprise my fans this weekend. I’m really proud of ‘Hannah Montana The Movie,’ and wanted to do something special to reward the loyal Disney fans who show up opening weekend.”
Along with this announcement, Disney has launched Disney.com/surprise, a web site dedicated to giving fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes perspective of each Opening Weekend Surprise. Fans can visit the site now for a special message from Miley, and can return on Monday, April 13 for coverage of the surprises, plus a special treat.
Here’s a look at some DVDs set to hit the shelves Tuesday, March 31.
UPDATE: Tickets are no longer available for the Walt Disney Studios tapings, but see here for a related contest.
The LA Times is reporting that The View will be broadcasting from the Disney Studios in Burbank, CA the week of March 9.
The inspiration for the location came from executive producer Bill Geddie who accompanied Barbara Walters when she was honored with a Disney Legends Award. The article cites Geddie as being enamored by the Disney Studio’s Legends Plaza (see image on left) which faces the seven dwarfs adorning the Michael D. Eisner building and holds replicas of the famous Disney statues Partners and Sharing the Magic in addition to a giant sculpture of the Disney Legends award itself. Plaques containing the names of Disney Legends cover the plaza’s columns.
Along with scheduled guests such as Miley Cyrus, Sally Field, Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria Parker and Jay Leno, the show also plans to make full use of its host and explore the facilities and history of the studios, particularly in way of animation (the Walt Disney Animation Studios are actually in a complex across the road from the Studios). For ticket information, see this page on ABC.com.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Studios within the past year, so look for additional photos and information to come soon.
