In late 2005, Disney’s DisneyToon Studios (then the king of direct-to-home-video sequels) began development on a sequel to the 1970 animated classic, The Aristocats. Although some storyboards have been passed around the internet, little appears to be known about the canceled project and based on what is known, there’s probably a very good reason for it.
Walt Disney Studios Australia has just released a new featurette for Maleficent (May 30, 2014) titled ‘Creatures’ which uses a bit of new footage to explore the inhabitants of the Moors as well as takes a look at what’s perhaps the most curious creature of all — Maleficent herself. You can find the featurette embedded below.
By now it should come as no surprise that the appearance of the titular character in Maleficent takes her cues from the villain in the Disney animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. Yet for all the similarities the ‘two’ characters share, there were challenges and decisions made when bringing her to life that affected her appearance.
Arguably the most glaring difference would be Maleficent’s skin tone. Whereas Disney Legend Marc Davis imagined her flesh to be decidedly green, the character portrayed by Angelina Jolie takes on a far more pale complexion. Rick Baker, the legendary special effects makeup artist, was responsible for Maleficent’s appearance and explains that the skin color decision was made to keep Maleficent to appear more ‘relatable’ and not ‘too creature-like,’ emphasizing the intent to keep Maleficent ‘pretty and attractive.’
Well, technically it’s more of a second look. When we shared two dozen newly released hi-res stills from Disney’s Maleficent (May 30, 2014) yesterday, we also inadvertently also gave a glimpse of Jolie-Pitt family members Pax and Zahara in their uncredited roles.
Seen here as participants in the coronation scene as mama Maleficent briskly passes by, the pair portray a prince and princess escorted by their ‘mothers’ who — as it turns out — are their real-life tutors, according to an interview Jolie recently gave to Entertainment Weekly.

Prior to its removal, ‘Believe’ actress Jamie Chung’s bio on the NBC website was the latest to betray the envelope of secrecy surrounding the voice talent for Disney’s upcoming animated film, Big Hero 6 (November 7, 2014). Now removed from the live bio (but still available via Google Cache), her biography read, in part: ‘Going forward, future projects include Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller; Rudderless, directed by William H. Macy; indie comedy Flock of Dudes and Disney’s animated film Big Hero 6.’ It is being assumed that Chung will tackle the role of Leiko Tanaka /aka/ GoGo Tomago. According to Marvel, Tanaka is ‘young and highly agressive, with little patience for others, but a very strong will, someone who does not give up easily.’ Tanaka has ties to to the underworld, but opted to join BH6 rather than face jail time (for convictions unknown). By uttering her own name, she can transform her body into an explosive ball of energy which is able to be projected at vast speeds.
Disney has launched a new fashion-oriented blog in support of Maleficent at disneymaleficent.tumblr.com which is teased with the tagline ‘Evil is the New Black’ (evilisthenewblack.com also forwards to the blog). Although aside from a couple of obligatory GIFs designed to go viral, the site is primarily offering news and images related to fashion lines inspired by the new film. In addition, to the pro-fashion slant, however, are several images which appear to be concept art for the film, featuring both the Maleficent and Aurora characters (as well as the Moors and its inhabitants). For your convenience, we have gathered these images together into a gallery which you will find embedded below.
