mu characters 112x160 Monsters University Poster Full of Character, IntrigueA new international poster for Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University has been released and it’s chock full of characters from the film along with several confirmations (such as Randy Boggs (aka Randall) being affiliated with the Roar Omega Roar (ROR) fraternity as well as George Sanderson being in Jaws Theta Chi (JOX)), but what’s perhaps most telling is that none of the Omega Kappa (OK) students are in their respective uniforms. Instead, Mike, Sulley, Don, Squishy, Terri & Terry and Art all simply appear in clothing reading Monsters University. This and the fact that Omega Kappa’s fraternity house is actually in the basement of Squishy’s Mom’s house starts to make one wonder just how official OK starts out.

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University stars the vocal talents of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn and is directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae. The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

‘Monsters University’ Director Hints at Boo Tribute, Talks Prequel Timeline

MUNTeaserposter900 108x160 Monsters University Director Hints at Boo Tribute, Talks Prequel TimelineEarlier this month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Monsters University director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae, along with John Goodman, for a few minutes as part of a roundtable at the Disney/Pixar presentation at the 110th American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Following up on a tip I had received the day before, I took the opportunity to explore what overlap — if any — we might see between Monsters University and the original Monsters Inc. film. Unfortunately Scanlon nearly skirted the question altogether: ‘Well I don’t want to say that, I think you should wait and see. I will say that it’s teeing up to the original film nicely.’

Almost as cryptic was Scanlon’s and Rae’s response to my question about a tribute to Boo in the upcoming prequel. Although I realized it would be impossible for Boo to directly appear in the film and I personally felt it would be impractical for her to appear in any direct form, I imagined with Pixar’s knack for inside jokes and tributes, it wouldn’t be far off to anticipate getting Mary Gibbs (who voiced Boo as a toddler) to return to the recording studio. So can we expect the voice of Boo to return to the big screen in some form? ‘I can’t say anything about that, but,’ Scanlon replied before producer Rae interjected with ‘but there’s a bunch of new characters that we’re really excited about.’ Scanlon followed up with ‘there’s a lot of new characters. There’s lots of fun cameos here and there, so… yeah, keep an eye out.’

And new characters there are plenty. While we’ve been introduced to fellow Oozma Kappa students Don Carlton, Art, Terri & Terry Perry and Scott ‘Squishy’ Squibbles, there are plenty more characters to be formally introduced, especially sisters of the Slugma Slugma Kappa (EEK) and Eta Hiss Hiss (HSS) sororities. In addition to Carrie, we can probably look forward to getting to knowing fellow students Nadya, Sonia, Rosie, Violet. Carla, Brynn, Rhonda and more.

And just in case you missed it, be sure to check out our additional coverage of the Monsters University Toy Fair event including an exclusive in-depth look at upcoming toys for this spring and fall.

‘Monsters University’ Featurette Reveals Plot Points, First Clip (Minor Spoilers)

MUNTeaserposter900 108x160 Monsters University Featurette Reveals Plot Points, First Clip (Minor Spoilers)Animation Fascination has uploaded a new featurette/sneak peek at Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, presumed to be included on the upcoming Monsters Inc. blu-ray release. Narrated by director Dan Scanlon, the featurette offers up quite a bit of concept art along with some of the story which involves how rivals Mike Wazowski and James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan were rejected from the prized scaring educational track by Dean Hardscrabble and how Mike concocts a plan to get into the program. To pull it off, they must join the Oozma Kappa fraternity which — although is made up of other scare program rejects — is just OK with us.

Scanlon also talks about character development, particularly with Mike and Sulley, and also provides a good look at some of the other supporting cast, including Art.

P.S. Hi, Squishy’s Mom!

A new trailer for the film, which debuts in theaters on June 21, 2013, is expected this Monday at around 12 pm ET, in conjunction with a Monsters University event being held by Disney at the American International Toy Fair in New York, in which Scanlon will be joined in person by Billy Crystal and John Goodman.

TOY FAIR: Disney Sneak Peek: ‘Monsters University,’ ‘Planes,’ ‘Sofia the First’ and More

Just ahead of the 110th annual American International Toy Fair kick-off this Sunday, Disney Consumer Products has shared a sneak peek at just some of the toys coming later this year, representing some of its iconic properties. From Monsters University, Oz the Great and Powerful and Planes to ‘Sofia the First’ and ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ to proven franchises such as Minnie Mouse, Disney Fairies and — of course — the princesses, these toys represent some a new take on classic play, often integrating cutting edge technology to enhance the experience.

On Monday, Disney will give an invited audience an exclusive look at some of the upcoming merchandising from Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University. To celebrate the announcement (which may or may not include a look at the new trailer), the film’s stars John Goodman and Billy Crystal will join director Dan Scanlon in providing a sneak peek and some insight into the highly anticipated prequel.

While we can expect plenty more from Monsters University such as action figures, vehicles, playsets, plush figures, preschool, remote control items and more to help kids recreate key moments from the film through innovative and fun features, Disney is providing a first look into a couple of the coolest items from Spin Master, who recently released several products for Monsters Inc.

Children will be able to recreate the fun, action and adventure of the film during playtime with products such as Scare Off Sulley from Spin Master, a feature plush that utilizes life-like animatronics and sound and light detection technology to change play modes and sense the environment. Kids can start their Scare Training as Sulley teaches them everything he knows. But once he feels they’re ready, prepare for a Scare Off! Scream loud enough and Sulley will fall backwards in fear! Scare Off Sulley is the most interactive Monsters University toy delivering Scare Training, Speed Scare, Scare ‘O Meter, Room Guard and the Scare Off Challenge! Ages

The Monsters University Sulley Monster Mask transforms kids into real monsters! It’s 100% kid powered. As your jaw opens, closes or moves side to side, the Sulley Monster Mask’s eyebrows and lips move too – creating fun, scary and memorable faces.

From Disney Toon Studios — and inspired by Disney/Pixar’s Cars — Planes tells the story of Dusty Crophopper in the pursuit of his dream. Toys set to be released in support of the film include an all-new collection of die cast vehicles, play sets and the ‘Planes Tilt and Fly’ and ‘Planes Air Race Trackset’ from Mattel, anchoring the Planes toy line. Planes fans can also recreate their favorite moments from the film with the deluxe remote control U-Command Dusty from Thinkway, complete with an infrared remote control feature allowing kids to program this Dusty with over 1,000 action combo sequences. Mattel will also offer the innovative Planes Pilot Pal Dusty Remote Control Plane which allows children to control Dusty by attaching the wing-shaped controllers to their own arms.

Disney Junior’s newest sensation, ‘Sofia the First,’ will no doubt be topping the must-have lists of every aspiring princess in the upcoming year. While Disney Store has already launched a limited line of products that are near impossible to keep in stock, look for other companies like CDI and Mattel to up the ante. Featured here are CDI’s Talking Magical Amulet which not only allows the child to wear Sofia’s Amulet of Avalor, but will teach valuable lessons as well. Mattel will introduce the Magical Talking Castle which interacts by playing actual phrases from the television series.

Also representing the Disney Junior fans will be brand new DUPLO sets from LEGO including Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ Bucky set. Fisher-Price will also be introducing Cheering Minnie who speaks 13 different phrases as well as dances and cheers to the classic rock anthem ‘Hey Mickey.’

Mattel will also be updating its Disney Princess Ultimate Dream Castle. This time around, instead of a flying carpet, it’s Rapunzel who lends a hand hair to serve as the 3-story castle’s elevator. Not only does the castle come with 30 accessories, but Mattel is also introducing the Disney Magic Mirror app for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that will help create several augmented reality experiences.

This year will also be the year of The Little Mermaid, Ariel. In support of The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition TOY FAIR: Disney Sneak Peek: Monsters University, Planes, Sofia the First and More on blu-ray on October 1, look for special merchandise to commemorate the classic film and the Disney princess it gifted us.

Below is a gallery of the items mentioned above as well as several more that are coming soon to a toy store near you. Be sure to follow us on Twitter as we will bring highlights of other Disney toys at the American International Toy Fair in New York City beginning Saturday at the Hasbro preview event, followed by the LEGO event, the Monsters University event and much, much more!

Earlier this evening, The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, held its 40th Annual Annie Awards at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, CA. While addressing the myriad of technical issues for the awards show were well beyond the capabilities of Fix-It Felix Jr and his magic hammer, the clear winner of the night was Wreck-It Ralph from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ short Paperman, directed by John Kahrs, also took its category of Best Animated Short Subject. Smith, A.C.E., Robert Grahamjones, A.C.E., David Suther) and Production Design in an Animated Feature (Steve Pilcher). Kristen Schaal also took the honors for Voice Acting in an Animated Television Production for her role as Mabel Pines in ‘Gravity Falls.’

Lastly, Jerome Platteaux, John Sigurdson, Ryan Hopkins, Raul Essig and Mark Chataway of Industrial Light & Magic were recognized for Animated Effects in a Live Action Film for Marvel’s The Avengers.

‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ ‘Frankenweenie,’ ‘Brave,’ ‘Paperman,’ ‘Avengers,’ Get Oscar Noms; ‘Lincoln’ Leads Charge

Earlier this morning, awards show host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominations for the primary categories for the upcoming 85th annual Academy Awards at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Disney’s only nominations announced thus far — unsurprisingly — have been for Best Animated Feature Film in which Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar Animation Studio’s Brave were all nominated. Other films in the category are Laika’s Paranorman and Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ other animated film, Paperman, was nominated for Best Short against Adam and Dog, Fresh Guacamole, Head over Heels and Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare.’ Meanwhile, Marvel’s The Avengers was nominated for Achievement in Visual Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams and Dan Sudick).

Otherwise, the morning belonged to Lincoln, produced by Dreamworks but marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Lincoln wracked up twelve nominations including: Best Performance for Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Performance for Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Best Achievement in Directing (Steven Spielberg), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Achievement in Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Achievement in Costume Design (Joanna Johnston), Achievement in Film Editing (Michael Kahn), Best Original Score (John Williams), Achievement in Production Design (Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson), Achievement in Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins) and Best Picture, where it competes against Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Lining’s Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Amour.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
