“Frozen – Live at the Hyperion,” a new musical based on Disney’s animated blockbuster film, will open at the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure Park on May 27, 2016. Audiences will be immersed in the emotional journey of Anna and Elsa with all of the excitement of live theater, in an entertaining musical adaptation that includes elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects, show-stopping production numbers and unique theatrical surprises.
Last night at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort, Idina Menzel performed ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen to a sold-out crowd. The performance was taped for ABC’s upcoming television special, ‘The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60,’ airing February 21 at 8:00 pm. ABC has released photos from the taping which have been added to our gallery of images from the special below.
Earlier this year, we shared news that Imagineering’s Disney Creative Entertainment (DCE) division had made plans to workshop the upcoming staged production of ‘Frozen,’ which is set to replace ‘Aladdin’ at Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theatre in spring of 2016.
Casting calls have now been published for the production itself, which will be directed by stage veteran Liesl Tommy. The roles, descriptions and requirements are as follows:
- Elsa: Princess who becomes Queen; fearfully plagued by powers she hasn’t yet learned to control; lives a life of isolation separated from society and those she loves, including her sister. All Ethnicities. Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano; mix/belt

According to a newly published casting call, Disney Creative Entertainment’s production of the staged musical adaptation of Frozen will be workshopped in Anaheim between November 30 and December 19, 2015 with the initial casting session to take place in New York City on October 16.
The recently-announced production will replace ‘Aladdin’ which will end its 13 year run on January 10, 2016 and it appears DCE — a branch of Walt Disney Imagineering — is looking to replace the current production — often considered Broadway-caliber fare — with a well-pedigreed production worthy of taking its place. According to the casting notice, Liesl Tommy is set to direct (Tommy just came off an off-Broadway production titled ‘Eclipse’ starring Lupita Nyong’o) and Millicent Johnnie is set to choreograph.
The Disneyland Resort has officially filed for permits for construction on what it is indeed calling ‘Luigi’s Festival of the Dance,’ the new attraction set to replace the troubled ‘Luigi’s Flying Tires’ attraction in the Carsland section of Disney California Adventure.
Available for viewing online here, the permit is seeking permission for an underground electrical conduit for the attraction. The permit’s description reads as follows: Electrical for DCA – Carsland – Luigi’s Festival of the Dance – Area Development, Architectural, Structural, and Electrical Work for Luigi’s Attraction – Ride Vehicle Maintenance Building 779 s.f., Attraction Slab, Modified Exit Queue, New Ride Cabinets and Systems, and Provide Revised Barriers and Gates
The Disneyland Resort has already announced its ambitious plans for new entertainment to commence with its 60th Anniversary celebration that commences on May 22, 2015, but as it turns out, there may be some cards up its sleeve. While we did previously report a rumor that there would be a new parade for Disney California Adventure, nothing has yet to be officially announced.
A new listing on the Disney Auditions web site, however, appears to promise a new entertainment offering, not unlike how a prior listing confirmed a new night-time parade at Disneyland, which indeed turned out to be the Resort’s version of ‘Paint the Night’ from Hong Kong Disneyland.
Beginning today at noon, Disney Parks and Resorts will begin giving away 725 pairs of tickets to what’s being called the ‘Disney Side Event,’ taking place in Stage 17 at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort on November 5, 2013.
The giveaway is titled ‘Social Media All Stars Disney Side Event Ticket Giveaway’ and will run through November 1. It will involve 19 people dubbed ‘social influencers’ who will post — without advanced notice — a ‘fire drill alert’ calling for entrants to ‘show off your Disney Side in style.’ The first x entrants to respond to the ‘fire drill alert’ and click on the respective link will win a pair of park tickets good for November 5, 2013, to attend the event. The alerts, which will max out at 22, will come unannounced through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Vine via the ‘social influencer’s’ account.
The official Disney Parks blog today confirmed an earlier report by us speculating that virtual choir maestro Eric Whitacre would be teaming up with the Disneyland Resort to produce a special presentation of his composition ‘Glow’ written for the seasonal ‘World of Color – Holiday Dreams’ at Disney California Adventure.
Submissions are now being accepted, from which 500 performers will be selected and added into the show. Deadline for auditions are set for Sunday, October 6 at midnight Pacific time. A website with more information as well as a forum to answer questions and offer guidance has been set up at WorldOfColorHonorChoir.com.
As we previously reported, beginning November 15, 2013, Disney California Adventure will present a new holiday version of its ‘World of Color’ nighttime show, dubbed ‘World of Color — Winter Dreams.’ The show — which will be hosted by Olaf from Disney’s Frozen — will introduce new special effects along to a brand new cut of the show which will feature animation from Frozen as well as winter scenes from beloved Disney animated classics such as Bambi, Fantasia and Toy Story.
