Earlier today, at the media preview event at Nuremberg Toy Fair, the world got its first look at Chopper, Disney Channel and Lucasfilm revealed the first look at a brand new character from their upcoming animated series, ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ a droid named Chopper /aka/ the C1-10P. Disney has graciously provided us with images and behind-the-scenes featurette of Chopper, which you can find embedded below.
Based on early Ralph McQuarrie concept art for R2-D2, Chopper is a feisty droid who will play a prominent role in the highly anticipated forthcoming animated series. Because ‘Star Wars Rebels’ takes place four years prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Chopper sports a retro look that creates an aesthetic continuity with droids of the original trilogy. Although unlike his descendant Ar-too, Chopper boasts a pair of expressive arms that fold out of his head.
In terms of his personality, Chopper is described as a ‘lazy, cranky (if ultimately goodhearted) astromech droid. ‘If Artoo (R2-D2) is the
family dog,’ said Dave Filoni, executive producer of the show, ‘Chopper is the cat.’ Even so, Chopper is an essential crew member of the Ghost (the Rebels’ starship), tasked with keeping the starship running and operable for its band of heroes. In reality, thanks to his many ‘unique’ upgrades and customizations, no other alien, human, or even droid could handle the job.
