Ahead of any impending official announcement, Walt Disney Home Entertainment has solidly confirmed an April 5, 2016 release date for the Blu-ray edition of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The news initially came to our attention via Disney Store who has updated their listing to include the new date, although they do not list any bonus features. In our experience, when Disney Store lists an ‘expected by’ date, it’s pretty solid as far as release dates.
In addition, further investigation has shown that Disney has updated the graphic on its official page for the film, adding not only the April 5 date for the Blu-ray release, but also April 1, 2016 for a digital HD release. The rest of the page notes that the film is still in theaters, so it doesn’t yet contain pre-order links, nor any official list of expected bonus features either, nor whether any hint as to whether it will be released in 3D — which is a complete unknown, given it’s the first Lucasfilm release from Disney — or Ultimate HD, which is probably far least likely.
Also in our experience is that when Disney Store releases a date, an official announcement is usually made the same day. Today also happens to be the day of The Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholder meeting, which is being held in Chicago and scheduled to start at 11 am ET/8 am PST. If the release date announcement is somehow tied to the meeting, it can probably be expected some time between 11 and 12 ET, or it just could come as early as 9 am.
As previously reported, expected core bonus features include:
- Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey
- The Story Awakens: The Table Read
- Building BB-8
- Crafting Creatures
- Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight
- The Visual Magic Of The Force
- John Williams: The Seventh Symphony
- Deleted Scenes
- Force For Change
