Disney Sets Dates for Burton’s ‘Frankweenie,’ Edgar Rice Burrough’s ‘John Carter of Mars’
Walt Disney Studios has announced release dates for two more of its upcoming pictures.
Frankenweenie, the 3D stop-motion, feature-length adaptation of Tim Burton’s short film of the same name (and found on The Nightmare Before Christmas DVD), is set for March 9, 2012. Although no official synopsis has yet been released, the dark comedy centers around a young boy named Victor who loses his dog in a car accident, only to bring him back to life a la Frankenstein. The short is often cited as the key reason for Burton’s initial departure as an employee of the Studios.
Set in the wounded planet of Mars, John Carter of Mars chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). Based on the first book of the ‘Barsoom Series’ by Edgar Rice Burroughs (best known as the creator of Tarzan), the live-action film is currently being shot on location in London and is being directed by Pixar writer/director Andrew Stanton. It has been given a theatrical release date of June 8, 2012.
