This month, DisneyChannel.com lets users celebrate Halloween early with its “October Takeover” initiative, an augmented reality experience that gives kids the chance to be a virtual character from eight popular Disney Channel series.
A multiplatform digital and programming event, Disney Channel’s October Takeover starts online at www.DisneyChannel.com/Halloween where kids, with their parents’ permission, can digitally recreate themselves in virtual Halloween costumes representing some of their favorite Disney Channel characters such as “Hannah Montana,” Agent P from “Phineas and Ferb” and Sicky Vicky from “Sonny With A Chance,” among others. Trying on a costume is as easy as sitting in front of a webcam or uploading a photo. The Halloween-themed site instantly adds a costume over the image and allows webcam users to create a 15-second video. Participants have the opportunity to have their videos and photos featured on Disney Channel’s site or on-air throughout the month of October.
“By combining innovative augmented reality technology with popular Disney Channel characters and content, we’ve created an exciting, one of kind virtual Halloween experience that allows kids to interact with content across multiple platforms — on-air, online and via mobile,” said Lauren Devillier, vice president, Digital Media, Disney Channel.
Every Friday in October, Disney Channel’s “Night of Premieres” programming block will feature Halloween-themed programming and, in conjunction with that, DisneyChannel.com will reveal a new virtual costume related to one of the series featured that specific night. Additionally, beginning October 8th, kids can text the words “trick” or “treat” to DISNEY (347639) to get special Halloween surprises. Each week, new video content and mobile gaming will be available to kids who text in those keywords.
All viewer-created videos and photos will be featured on the October Takeover site, where kids can rank their favorites and send them to their friends. Disney Channel will also feature a variety of submitted videos on-air throughout the month.
