‘Maleficent’ with Angelina Jolie to Debut in Theaters March 14, 2014

The Walt Disney Studios today announced that Maleficent, the live-action film starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, will debut in theaters nationwide on March 14, 2014. Although no official synopsis has been released yet, based on early drafts of the script by Linda Woolverton, Maleficent will chronicle the life of the title fairy from youth as she is tormented and becomes the sorceress made famous in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty. The film will also share the same timeline as Princess Aurora’s story, but will be told mostly through Maleficent’s point of view, offering up some insight into her actions that no one has been witness to before, perhaps taking a cue from the Wicked Witch of the West as seen in Gregory Maguire’s Wicked.

Maleficent will be directed by Academy Award®-winning production designer Robert Stromberg and is written by Linda Woolverton. Maleficent is produced by Joe Roth (Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful).
