‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Inspires Prelude Comic, Original Novel and More

'Guardians of the Galaxy'Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the next — and perhaps strangest — entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s mostly unknown to those who don’t embed themselves into the Marvel comics universe. While Star-Lord, Groot and Rocket Raccoon and the rest of the motley crew will undoubtedly become household names after the movie releases on August 1, 2014, Marvel is gearing up to indoctrinate us with a series of original books and materials tied to the film.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude is a hardcover volume of comics which features issues 1 & 2 of the Prelude (available as separate issues beginning in April) along with several other previously issued titles. The publisher’s description reads: ‘Prepare for Marvel Studios’ newest big-screen blockbuster with these all-new stories taking place just before the film! Who is Nebula? What tragic events forged her unbreakable allegiance to her dark lord? And how does Korath the Pursuer fit in? Then, as Gamora begins her quest for the Orb, see firsthand why she is the considered the most dangerous woman in the universe! Plus, relive the Guardians’ individual debuts as Gamora and Star-Lord burst onto the scene, Drax and Iron Man take on Thanos, Rocket Raccoon meets the Hulk…and Groot tries to enslave the earth!’ Available July 15, 2014.

While Marvel has already published its own prose novel adaptions of comic titles, Rocket Raccoon & Groot: Steal the Galaxy! will represent its first completely original title. The publisher’s description for the 304 page novel is as follows: ‘Marvel’s first original prose novel, featuring the stars of Guardians of the Galaxy! These are not the Avengers or the Fantastic Four — in fact, they’re barely even famous — but Rocket Raccoon and the faithful Groot are the baddest heroes in the cosmos, and they’re on the run across the Marvel Universe! During a spaceport brawl, the infamous pair rescues an android Recorder from a pack of alien Badoons, Everyone in the galaxy, however, including the ruthless Kree Empire and the stalwart Nova Corps, seems to want that Recorder, who’s about as sane as a sandwich with no mustard. Join Rocket and Groot on a free-for-all across the stars while they try to save all of existence-again!’ Available July 15, 2014.

Lastly (for now), is an official tie-in with the film, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie. Publisher’s description: ‘Continuing their popular ART OF series of movie tie-in books, Marvel presents its latest blockbuster achievement! Featuring exclusive concept artwork, behind-the-scenes photographs, production stills, and in-depth interviews with the cast and crew, MARVEL’S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: THE ART OF THE MOVIE is a deluxe keepsake volume that provides an insider’s look into the making of the highly anti cipated film directed by James Gunn, and starring Chris Pratt , Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio Del Toro as the Collector.’ 204 pages, available July 29, 2014.
