The magic returned to New York City this morning as Disney Store marked its triumphant return to the Big Apple in the heart of Times Square. In front of the store, located at 1540 Broadway, a large stage was constructed in order to celebrate the grand opening of the highly anticipated Disney Store Times Square.
Well before the actual ceremony, Disney Channel continued to film its ‘Disney 365’ segment on the store’s debut (it had filled some of it yesterday inside the store) with special guest, Disney Channel star Gregg Sulkin. Afterwards, audio from the Disney Store’s digital billboard was piped into the PA system allowing gawkers to listen in as they watched various clips and trailers from Walt Disney Studios and Disney Parks. The billboard is mounted 68 feet up in the air, weighs over half a ton and features 2.3 million diodes, allowing it to show off Disney content in full, vivid detail.
Co-hosted by Robin Roberts from ABC’s ‘Good Morning, America,’ the event featured brief speeches by Disney Store President Jim Fielding, Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg along with appearances of some of the most beloved Disney and Disney/Pixar characters including Cinderella, Belle, Tiana, Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Phineas and Ferb, Buzz Lightyear, Lightning McQueen and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Unfortunate technical glitches prevented Tinker Bell from leaving Pixie Hollow to making her magical flight around the area’s massive electronic billboards, but enough pixie dust managed to make it through.
‘Disney Stores play a critical role in how millions around the world experience our brand,’ said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger. ‘The new store design allows kids and families to have a fun and immersive experience while shopping for their favorite Disney products. We couldn’t be more excited to open this new Disney Store worthy of New York and Times Square.’
The event culminated in the store’s daily ‘Unlock the Imagination’ opening ceremony, performed here on stage by Disney Family.com 9-year old contest winner Aden Schwartz from Boston, Massachusetts.
After the event, a private affair was held inside the store which included a performance by Jordin Sparks along with fellow Disney family members Anika Noni Rose, Melissa Joan Hart, Brooke Shields and more. We plan on having some photos and perhaps video from the event soon, so check back here often!
