If there’s one thing to take away from Disney/Pixar’s Brave’s showing at this year’s International Toy Fair in New York, it’s that Brave is not a franchise. While there may be more merchandise coming down the pipeline as not all merchandise (or manufacturers for that matter) is represented at the trade show, the amount that has been shown for Brave pales in comparison to recent franchises such as Toy Story 3 and Cars 2. As a poor example, even Monogram International, which was showing a slight handful number of items for Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie (no photos, sorry, is offering one sole item for Brave— a journal.
The few items that are available, however, don’t disappoint. A visit to the showroom at JAKKS Pacific yielded a small treasure trove of merchandise devoted to Princess Merida. For role-play, CDI will release a Merida wig ($14.99), a jewelry set with glow-in-the-dark willow wisp earrings ($9.99), two beautiful dresses ($19.99 each) and a bow and arrow set with glow-in-the-dark willow wisp charm ($17.99). From Jakk’s Tollytots line, there will be two adorable Merida dolls, one in a ‘royal dress’ and the other in an ‘adventure dress’ ($19.99 each) as well as Merida’s faithful steed, Angus.
Over at the Mattel showroom, where photos were permitted, there were several dolls as well as a couple of playsets. The Merida doll, for which we included a close-up of her face, will retail for $14.99. The Brave Gem Styling Merida ($20.99) includes a reversible cape that reveals a sparkly print inspired by the film. Merida’s outfit and hair can be decorated with ‘gems’ and she includes a bow and arrow accessory. The Brave Castle and Forest Playset ($26.99) is a closed case that opens to reveal a bedroom and the kitchen as well as the forest as the background (with the three cubs alurking). The three royal triplets — Harris, Hubert and Hamish — are hidden throughout the playset, being mischievous. The triplets will also be available as figures part of a pack of five(?) with the additional characters to be named later (they are not the primary characters in the film). Also being offered is Merida in double-pack with her mother, Queen Elinor as well as a Merida and Angus set. There’s a good possibility that Angus will feature the rocking head motion as first featured with the Tangled Maximus, but that’s subject to change. Unfortunately, Mattel lists these items as releasing in fall.
Next up is a set of the three cubs beanbag plush by Just Play. Other Brave items spotted include removable wall decals from RoomMates, regular stickers and a Brave collector’s edition of Monopoly from USAopoly. As we have not yet been afforded the opportunity to tour USAopoly’s booth, there may in fact be more games inspired by the film, so we’ll update as it comes up.
UPDATE: The Pixar Times was able to secure a couple more photos of items mentioned in this article and also points to a video that highlights the Brave offerings from Jakks Pacific which we were unfortunately unable to bring to you. You can check out their article here.
