Several days ago, we noted on Twitter that Walmart had begun accepting pre-orders for Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a dummy release date of 12/31/16. While we accept that Walmart may do this type of pre-order often, we rarely see them do so with Disney titles without a semi-solid release date. Apparently their system can’t handle the ability to accept pre-orders without a release date like Amazon does and given that the title is such a hot seller, we can’t argue the temptation.
Fast forward to today when we were alerted that Walmart had actually removed The Force Awakens Blu-ray from its online inventory (the digital edition is still available for pre-order, however). Given that we shared the direct link already on Twitter, we double-checked it and sure enough, the title is no longer available for pre-order. However, we did happen to spot what we believe to be previously unseen art for the Blu-ray, featuring BB-8 (as seen above). You can still access the product page directly, despite not being able to search for it.
This is the latest entry in a string of leaks pending an official release announcement which fans have been clamoring for. More recently, online Swedish retailer cdon.se had listed what appeared to be potential bonus features (which also have been subsequently removed). The list was as follows:
- Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey
- The Story Awakens: The Table Read
- Building BB-8
- Crafting Creatures
- Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight
- The Visual Magic Of The Force
- John Williams: The Seventh Symphony
- Deleted Scenes
- Force For Change
We can also probably expect many retailer and online exclusives (potentially including the artwork shown above). It’s also probably likely that when an official announcement does come down, it may come through an online outlet via timed exclusive, such as EW’s coverage of Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur.
