LISTEN: ‘Story’ by Ai from Japanese Release of ‘Big Hero 6’

'Story (English)' by AiYesterday, we shared news of a new Japanese trailer for Big Hero 6 (November 7, 2014) — known in Japan as Baymax. The new trailer featured two songs: ‘Top of the World’ by Greek Fire — as heard in the domestic trailer — and a ‘brand new’ song, ‘Story’ by American-born Japanese artist Ai. Although Ai had released the song previously in Japanese, it was never released in English until now as it will be attached to the end title credits of the film as opposed to Fall Out Boy’s ‘Immortals’ in the United States.

The single is currently available for purchase on iTunes Japan, but realizing that’s a tall order for most of our readers, we have gone ahead and sampled the song below along with transcribed the lyrics which you can also find below. The English lyrics appear to be less than perfect when strung together, but the chorus and tune more than make up for it and it certainly delivers a strong message that speaks to the relationship that develops between Hiro and Baymax, who serves as a double-edged sword: a constant reminder of Hiro’s loss in his brother Tadashi while also providing the emotional support for Hiro to grieve and recover to a place that’s arguably better than he was ever in before.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph, comes Big Hero 6, an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter). When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called Big Hero 6.

STORY (English Version) by Ai – Transcribed

There are times I can’t explain, what can I say
You’ve given so much to me, memories to stay
As time goes by, I wonder why, I just couldn’t be myself
I didn’t want to show my heart, afraid to be apart

For so long, I’ve kept it inside of me
Didn’t have a place where I could let go
But then you came into my life and I
Found the strength to be myself again
There will be no sky too high

CHORUS:
I’m not alone, you’re by my side
I’m standing strong, you give me hope to carry on
You washed away my fears
Now I know I’m here because I have you near
You’re not alone, I’m by your side
When you are down, I’ll be the one to make you smile
I’ll wash away your tears
And the sun will shine its light on you and me

There are times you can’t explain, you don’t have to say
You don’t even have to hide the pain that’s deep inside
When you’re lost and need a friend, you can just call on my name
You can count on me, I will be right here for you

For so long, you’ve been holding on
Didn’t have a place where you could let go
Just take my hand and we’ll find a way
Through the good and bad, we’ll laugh and cry
Together we will find a way

(Chorus)

‘Cause you’re the reason I feel alive and there’s nothing to — hold me down
You’re the reason, I can spread my wings and fly

We have our own story
We all have the power to make a change
So just believe it (believe it), believe it (believe it)
And there’ll be a brighter side

(Chorus)

  1. This song is just so beautiful. I can easily see why Disney would pick this song for the film:

After Tadashi’s sudden death, Hiro gets into a state of depression. Then, when he meets Baymax and gets to know him better, their bond is just as unbreakable as the one between Hiro and Tadashi.
