WATCH: ‘The Little Mermaid’ Second Screen Live Experience Trailer

UPDATE: THE APP HAS BEEN RELEASED — GET IT HERE!

'The Little Mermaid' Second Screen LiveImmediate reactions were mixed at best when we first reported from the D23 Expo earlier this year that Disney will be taking its ‘Second Screen Live’ experience to theaters with The Little Mermaid beginning September 20, 2013.

Now Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has released a trailer promoting the event, which is the first time it has gone nationally after some prior localized trials with Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas. The ‘Second Screen Live’ experience encourages movie-goers to download a special app for their Apple iPad and bring it to the theater to engage in various activities such as sing-alongs, trivia, games and more.

The app will be available on Apple’s app store later this month and will be required for the experience which will be available at the following theaters:

  • AMC Burbank 16 – Burbank, CA
  • Arclight Beach Cities – El Segundo, CA

  1. I’ve got so many issues here. First of all, theaters ask us not to use our phones, but yes, please bring your giant iPad. Second, I would get so annoyed with all those screens being held up. I’m going to see a movie, not some person’s hands. Finally, I like that all of these families are so loaded that they can afford full sized iPads for every member of their family. I didn’t even get a cell phone until college, now these kids get iPads in elementary school?

  2. I got to go to one of the Nightmare Before Christmas screenings last year and it was fun! I brought my daughters and sat between them and we all played as a team and had a great time. It was explained that these are special screenings meant just for this event, so people are not going into that theater unless they bought a special ticket to play the game. I also thought before going that people would be annoyed with all the ipads, but you would go to this unless you planned to bring one. We shared, but there were lots of people who had their own but I didn’t mind because for two hours I was playing and singing with my kids. After they asked us what other movies this would be good for (I said Aladdin) and explained that it wont be done for new movies, just old ones so its a new way to see them. My girls are so excited to go back for Mermaid.
