Latest five discussions on the Muppet Whatnot Workshop Support Forum:
see more topics or create your own... Initially slated to open November 13, the Muppet Whatnot Workshop opened well ahead of schedule on October 27. Exclusive to FAO Schwarz in New York City, the newly opened Muppet Whatnot Workshop allows you to design your own Muppet Whatnot and have it custom made for you while you wait (or shop). What's a Whatnot you ask? Glad you asked I answer. A Whatnot is essentially an extra in Muppet skits, they're nameless, odorless and work for less than scale.
In this clip, Jim Henson explains the concept behind the Whatnot:
To begin the process, you receive a design kit which is essentially a Colorforms type activity. The three backgrounds offer you your choice of body color: blue, green and orange. Each is different not only in color, but in shape and classic Muppet features. Options include hair, eyes, nose and outfit. A member of the Muppet Whatnot Workshop staff will assist you in making your choices if you need the help or you can draw on the many examples of pre-made Whatnots that surround you. My experience was completely pressure-free allowing me to take as much time as I needed to create my ideal Whatnot.
![]() And the best news of all: You get to keep the design kit which is a bit of a neat standalone activity in itself (if not a major upsell opportunity for FAO). Once you're satisfied with your choices in features, your next assignment is to fill out the order sheet by checking off each of your chosen selections.
![]() And now your part is done and the Muppet Whatnot Workshop staff goes to work creating your Whatnot. You're free to watch the entire process which involves using hot glue to attach the pieces to the body or you can wander around the store and come back to pick up your Muppet Whatnot. The entire build process takes around 20 minutes or so allowing some time for the glue to set. A rod is attached to one of the hands (but you can easily switch it to the other hand at any time) and your Muppet Whatnot is placed in what's described as a backpack, a clear plastic bag with plenty of advertising thrown in for free.
![]() The cost for this reasonable facsimile of a Muppet is $103, or about $111 with tax. It's definitely a quality and passable product and all things considered really isn't that terribly priced. My only one gripe is that it's really not made for adult hands (at least not mine). It's a tight squeeze through the neck, but once your hand is in the head, it's not too bad although your body doesn't easily let you forget that feat. When it comes right down to it, it's still essentially a toy.
![]() Alternatively you can design and order your Muppet Whatnot online at FAO Schwarz Muppet Whatnot Workshop. Choices are designing your Whatnot online for $90 or buying a mail order design kit for $130 which can double as a gift for someone else.

Note that while some Whatnots pictured may have a rod for each hand, a Whatnot only comes with one but it's removable and can easily be attached to either hand so multiple Whatnots can borrow from each other.
