Hey Howdy Hey! Disney Education is calling on children (aged 3-12) from the US to come up with their best original story featuring Sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the Toy Story pals and produce it with the Toy Story: Story Theater app ($2.99) for the chance to send their family to this year’s Disney D23 Expo, being held right near the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.

It’s all part of the ‘Disney Toy Story Theater Film Festival‘ in which the top one hundred submitted stories will be made available for public voting. The winning family will then be offered a trip to stay at the Disneyland Resort from August 9-11, complete with one day passes to the parks as well as admission to the Disney D23 Expo, plus a Disney Gift card in the amount of $100.

The best part is children can enter once per day during the contest period which starts Monday, May 27 and ends June 23, 2013. There is an alternative no-purchase-necessary way to enter as well.

Beginning May 28, Disney Cruise Line hopefuls will have the opportunity to win a seven day voyage aboard the Disney Fantasy with the ‘Catch Stitch Sweepstakes’ available at CatchStitchSweepstakes.com. At stake is a single grand prize of either a western- or eastern-Caribbean vacation aboard Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Fantasy.

Although the sweepstakes’ temporary homepage is advertising a vacation at Disney Cruise Line’s private island, Castaway Cay, the official rules clearly define the prize as being a regular vacation which will, of course, include day stops at Castaway Cay. The vacation will be for up to four guests and includes roundtrip airfare.

What’s most promising about the sweepstakes, however, isn’t necessarily the prize, but the fact that it’s being developed and operated by Prizelogic, the same company that did the amazing ‘board game’ sweepstakes for Disney Cruise Line. Just ahead of E3, we have received confirmation of something we have been reporting for quite some time: a previously as-of-yet unannounced playset for ‘Disney Infinity,’ The Lone Ranger. Although we have been talking about the playset since before the original announcement, we last visited the possibility back in March, when the launch had been delayed until August. While most outlets focused on that its launch no longer coincided with the theatrical release of Monsters University, we also pointed out that it now releases after the theatrical debut of The Lone Ranger, which will now mean Disney Infinity will be relying on the success of the film rather than being a marketing tool for it.

Now with E3 just a couple of weeks away, etailers such as Amazon.com have begun listing the playset for pre-order. One gung ho retailer in particular, Entertainment Earth, even went as far as providing an image of the packaging for the playset which features the Tonto and Lone Ranger figures, along with the playset token, a variant on the skull and crossbones composed of a Texas Ranger badge, a pistol and a tomahawk.

With the home video release of Oz the Great and Powerful on June 11, 2013, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will be launching a new service, ‘Digital Copy Plus.’ Taking a cue from the Disney Movies Anywhere initiative, in which consumers will be able to purchase a film and stream it across multiple devices, the Digital Copy Plus replaces the digital copy disc previously offered and transfers it into the cloud, so consumers can choose how and where the digital copy is stored/accessed from.

The way it works is relatively simple: consumers will take the Digital Copy Plus code included in their purchase and enter it into the DigitalCopyPlus.com website. They will then choose a cloud provider: iTunes, Amazon Instant Video or Vudu, each with their own offerings on multi-device playback via download and streaming, including access via Roku devices. This means at launch (and depending on chosen provider), Disney films will be available on televisions, iOS devices, Roku, Android tablets, Kindle Fire, gaming consoles, PCs, Macs and even — ironically enough — BD players that offer access to these providers.

The service is not just limited to Disney releases, however. It will apply to all of Disney’s studios including Pixar, Marvel, Touchstone and even DreamWorks, which Disney currently has a distribution agreement with.

At launch, it appears the service will be available only to consumers in the United States and Canada, with Canadian access limited to the iTunes service.

It’s still a far cry from the promised Disney Movies Anywhere service, but it certainly seems a step in the right direction, especially for the company which can now trade off manufacturing and supporting additional discs and materials for leveraging existing services from third party providers.

On June 4, Walt Disney Records will digitally release The Circle Sessions (Piano Performances from Carthay Circle), a new soundtrack that highlights some of the music that can be found at the Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure in the Disneyland Resort.

This is the second title from the popular restaurant whose background music consists of Disney favorites with styles that transition seamlessly as diners move between seating areas. The first title, The Circle Sessions (The Music of Carthay Circle) was released online last year after being available in the park.

While the two albums have a few tracks in common, the followup contains tracks from fan favorites such as Mary Poppins, Enchanted and Newsies.

Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions have provided us with these ‘fun facts’ from their upcoming release, The Lone Ranger (July 3, 2013), starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American warrior Tonto (Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Representatives from both the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire were out in full force this morning as LEGO virtually transformed New York City’s Times Square into Yavin IV to unveil the world’s largest LEGO sculpture. Consisting of 5,335,200 LEGO bricks and weighing in at a svelte 45,980 pounds, the full-scale LEGO X-wing Starfighter arrived with much fanfare. Built in the LEGO model shop in Kladno, Czech Republic, the 1:1 replica of LEGO kit 9493 took 32 builders 17,336 hours to construct. Its true 1:1 scale means it measures 11 feet in height, 43 feet in length and has an impressive wingspan of 44 feet. In addition, the cockpit can fit an actual ‘pilot’ (serving as a photo-op during the three day event).

The X-wing is stationed in Times Square through Saturday, where it serves as an ambassador for the new animated series, ‘The Yoda Chronicles,’ debuting May 29 on Cartoon Network at 8:00 pm ET (a special follows at 9 pm, covering the big reveal).

‘Just as kids love to test and hone their LEGO building skills and imaginative storytelling, our LEGO Master Builders are always testing their creative skills to top their last larger-than-life sized creations,’ said Michael McNally, Brand Relations Director for LEGO Systems. ‘The size and structural complexity of a freestanding model 42 times the size of one our retail sets was a challenge they could not resist.’ The sculpture had to be engineered to withstand transportation, assembly/dis-assembly, resting above the New York City subway system and even earthquakes as it will be on display at Legoland California from June 15, 2013 through the end of the year.

While visitors can board the X-wing for a photo-op, other activities include: photo-ops with life-size LEGO Star Wars figures including Yoda, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2; participate in free building classes with a LEGO master builder; make and take home a mini-X-wing; and check out a display of ‘The Yoda Chronicles’ LEGO sets. Visitors can also claim a goodie-bag which contains a commemorative double-sided poster, mini-magazine/comic book which includes articles and 2013 Star Wars mini-fig checklist and more. Additionally, a special commemorative edition of the 9493 X-wing Starfighter LEGO set is available exclusively at the Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square for $74.99 which includes a limited edition Yoda ‘NY I (heart)’ mini-fig through Saturday or while supplies last.

For one night only, two of the world’s most celebrated songwriters and composers will take to the stage for ‘Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook.’ The concert will take place at the D23 Expo 2013 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the D23 Expo Arena on Saturday, August 10.

Together Sherman and Menken have won a combined 10 Academy Awards for their work with Disney, and have composed music and songs for more than three dozen Disney feature films, over two dozen Disney Park attractions and half a dozen Disney musicals on Broadway.

‘I can’t express how excited I am that my esteemed friend Alan Menken and I will be sharing the same bill for the very first time,’ said Sherman. ‘Alan is an incredible talent, and I know we’re both thrilled to be performing for Disney’s most ardent fans — they’re the best and I can’t wait to be a part of what promises to be a very special night for all of us.’

‘Richard Sherman and I share so many things; our cherished association with The Walt Disney Company, the blessing of having the opportunity to share our musical talents with “children of all ages” and a genuine mutual admiration — but one thing we’ve never gotten to share is a concert stage,’ said Menken. ‘This summer at the D23 Expo 2013, we will do just that. And I can’t think of anyone I’d prefer to share that stage with. Richard, along with his brother Robert, wrote songs that filled my formative years with joy and fantasy. ABC Family has added another original series to its roster of original programming that will premiere this summer. “Spell-Mageddon” is an hour game show where contestants take on hilarious distractions while spelling increasingly challenging words.

“Spell-Mageddon,” which takes a traditional spelling bee to a whole new level, is created and Executive-Produced by Adam Reed, Adam Freeman and Leslie Greif of Thinkfactory Media. Additional Executive Producers are Jeff Krask and Michael Canter. It will join ABC Family’s Wednesday night comedy line-up on Wednesday July 24th at 9pm following “Melissa and Joey” and “Baby Daddy.”
