‘Paperman’ to be Screened at LA Film Fest in June

According to its official Facebook page, Disney’s revolutionary short, Paperman'Paperman' will make its North American debut at the LA Film Fest in June. Just prior to that, it is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Annecy International Film Festival.

Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with Paperman. Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, Paperman pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.

‘TRON: Uprising’ Concept Art Released

Attitude sheet for Tensler from 'TRON: Uprising' © Disney

Disney XD has released concept art for its upcoming series ‘TRON: Uprising’ via the official Tron Facebookpage. The artwork provides us with ‘attitude sheets’ of a few of the primary characters including Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), Zed (voiced by Nate Corddry) and General Tesler (voiced by Lance Henriksen).

The images, available in the gallery below, complement the dozens of stills from the series’ debut special ‘Beck’s Beginning’ which we previously shared.

In the special, premiering May 18 on Disney Channel, Beck is a young mechanic living in Argon City, a growing metropolis in a far off corner of The Grid that has just been occupied by General Tesler, a henchman of the notorious Clu. After his best friend Bodhi is ruthlessly derezzed by Clu’s army, Beck seeks justice for his lost friend and launches a crusade against the regime. His rebellion captures the attention of Tron, the greatest warrior The Grid has ever known, who sees the potential in Beck and trains him to be his successor. Labeled with the moniker of The Renegade, Beck sparks a revolution to fight for the freedom of The Grid.

Report: Marvel ‘Avengers’ Exhibit Opens at Madame Tussauds New York

Marvel exhibit at Madame Tussauds New York - Hulk

The Avengers have assembled once more, but this time in wax. Late last week, Madame Tussauds in New York City’s Times Square introduced a new Marvel experience to commemorate the theatrical debut of Marvel’s The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

The exhibit is comprised of several figures, amongst which are Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, although only the latter two are new figures for the Museum chain. In fact Hulk stands at an astounding 15 feet tall, which is almost double that of the film’s character, and while Tony Stark may be made of wax, the Iron Man suit on display is not. Captain America and Thor, however, are absolutely true to their individual film counterparts, dress in film accurate costume and patterned after actors Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans.

After visiting the gallery life-sized Marvel icons, guests of the Museum are invited to watch a 4D movie featuring several of the Marvel superheroes. The short 3D film (which ironically shares a plot point with Marvel’s The Avengers) is CG and was actually initially created for and exhibited at Madame Tussauds London.

Although the press release promises elements of interactivity in the exhibit, I didn’t manage to spot any (Thor seemed particularly attached to Mjolnir), but it didn’t seem to take anything away from the exhibit which fits right in with the rest of the museum.

Below is a gallery of photos I took while visiting the Marvel experience:

Lasseter to Participate in CG Animation Panel Moderated by Tom Sito

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced it will be conducting a panel on computer-generated film animation ‘from Vertigo to Toy Story to the 3D spectacles of today.’ The panel, moderated by legendary animator and historian Tom Sito, is titled ‘The Development of the Digital Animator,’ and well be held Monday, May 21 at 7:30 pm PT in Beverly Hills as part of the Academy’s Marc Davis Celebration of Animation.

When Toy Story burst onto the scene in 1995, computer-generated imagery was, for many, a bold new technique in animation. However, its lengthy and meticulous development can be traced back to its first public exposure with the mesmerizing title sequence for Vertigo (1958). Of equal importance to the technical developments were the influential animators and designers who devised artistic uses for engineering advances.

Scheduled panelists include:

Rebecca Allen, an experimental filmmaker who has worked at the New York Institute of Technology and MIT. She collaborated on ‘the Catherine Wheel’ with Twyla Tharp and made landmark music videos for Kraftwerk, Mark Mothersbaugh and Peter Gabriel. She currently holds a professorship in the Department of Design|Media Arts at UCLA.

Philippe Bergeron, a CG animator and landscape designer who teamed up with Daniel Langlois and two other directors to create one of the first CG characters in the 1985 short Tony de Peltrie. He has worked at Digital Productions and Whitney/Demos Productions and is president of PaintScaping, Inc.
David Em, who began producing digital art in the 1970s and has worked as an independent artist in such research laboratories as the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Apple Computer’s Advanced Technology Group. He is the first digital artist to have his papers collected and preserved by the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art.

Tim Johnson, a director and animator who began his career at Chicago’s Post Effects. In the 1980s, while at Pacific Data Images, he animated the first digital Pillsbury Doughboy. His directing credits include Antz, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and Over the Hedge.

Jeff Kleiser, the co-founder of Digital Effects, New York’s first CG house. Kleiser later co-founded both Kleiser-Walczak Construction Company and Synthespian Studios. His credits include Tron, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, Stargate and X-Men The Last Stand.

Bill Kroyer, an animator and director whose credits include Tron, FernGully: The Last Rainforest and Scooby-Doo. Kroyer received an Academy Award® nomination for his 1988 short film Technological Threat. He is currently Director of Digital Arts at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University.

John Lasseter, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Feature Animation and Pixar Animation Studios, whose credits include Pixar’s first short, the Academy Award-winning Luxo Jr., and the feature films Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Cars and Cars 2.

Tom Sito, a veteran Hollywood animator and historian whose credits include Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Shrek and Hop.

Phil Tippett, an Academy Award-winning visual effects animation director whose credits include Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jurassic Park, The Spiderwick Chronicles and several films in the Twilight Saga.

Diana Walczak, the CG animator and director who co-founded Kleiser-Walczak Construction Company and Synthespian Studios. With Jeff Kleiser, she created the first female Synthespian performer, Dozo, for the 1989 music video ‘Don’t Touch Me.’ Her credits include the digital opera Monsters of Grace and the feature films X-Men and Surrogates.

Tickets for ‘The Development of the Digital Animator’ are on sale now. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with valid ID. They may be purchased online at Oscars.org, by mail, or in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the program when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit Oscars.org.

Photos/Videos: Merida Character Begins Testing at Epcot in Walt Disney World

Princess Merida at Epcot in Walt Disney World. Photo by abelle2 / FlickrPrincess Merida, the heroine of Disney/Pixar’s Brave, made a surprise appearance in Future World at Epcot yesterday. Although she will officially begin meeting guests in a play and greet environment at the Magic Kingdom starting later this month, she is apparently making random appearances as she gets acclimated to the harsh Orlando weather.

A batch of photos have appeared on Flickr from abelle2, although it appears more photos can be seen currently on this tumblr post (via @DisneyProjects).

In addition, a couple of videos have surfaced on YouTube. The first, while the first to be spotted — and thus more popular — is a bit short and seems more focused on the person shooting the video rather than Merida herself, while the second features Merida speaking at more length, but with substantial ambient noise.

Although Walt Disney World has indicated Merida will officially begin greeting guests in Mid-May and there are rumors that her start date will be May 15, sources have indicated to us that while it’s possible she may start that week, a date closer towards the end of the month is more likely at this time. She will also be appearing to meet and greet with guests in Disneyland.

‘DWTS’ Classical Week to Feature Joshua Bell, Jackie Evancho and Gavin DeGraw

Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars,” themed Classical Night, opens with a stunning live performance from classical music superstar Joshua Bell, who will be performing “Vivaldi’s Summer,” accompanied by the Troupe, MONDAY, APRIL 30 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on ABC. Other special musical artists joining the evening are soprano prodigy Jackie Evancho and world renowned Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who will grace the stage, accompanying dance performances throughout the evening. Jackie Evancho will be performing “Dark Waltz” during a pro dance performance with Tristan MacManus and Karina Smirnoff. The seven remaining couples will compete to famous pieces of classical music and return to the ballroom floor later in the night for their always entertaining Team Dances. Team Paso’s Melissa & Maks, William & Cheryl, and Donald & Peta battle Team Tango’s Katherine & Mark, Maria & Derek, Roshon & Chelsie, Jaleel & Kym during Monday night’s show.

Earlier this season, he charmed audiences as we watched him Samba and Foxtrot, but Tuesday night Gavin DeGraw returns to the ballroom as a special musical guest. He will be performing his new hit single “Sweeter,” accompanied by Karina Smirnoff and Louis Van Amstel, TUESDAY, MAY 1 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on ABC. And the final Dance Duel will be held this week, with the bottom two couples performing the Rumba, to the same song at the same time as the judges decide who the next eliminated couple will be, TUESDAY, APRIL 24 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on ABC.

Tuesday night not only brings back DeGraw and eliminates one more couple, it also brings us “Dancing with the Stars: Ballroom Battle.” This competition features six pro dancers who paired together and held auditions for amateur couples throughout America. One couple was selected to represent each pro-dancer team in a head-to-head Ballroom Battle. On Tuesday, the three winning couples with their coaches – Cheryl Burke, Tony Dovolani and Louis Van Amstel – will compete in a live finale on stage. Each couple will perform a no-holds-barred Jive and the judges will name the Ballroom Battle champions.

Also, during Tuesday night’s show we will have an “AT&T’s Spotlight” performance will spotlight Richard “Steelo” Vazquez, who will perform with the Groovaloos for a very exciting and uplifting performance. “Steelo” was one of the top B-boy dancers working in music, film and television and a member of the popular dance group The Groovaloos. Sadly, in 2011 he suffered a brain aneurysm which resulted in him losing his ability to speak and walk. He spent six months in the hospital and now goes to physical rehabilitation five days a week, seven hours a day. On Tuesday, Steelo will reunite with the Groovaloos for the first time since his aneurysm. Although he isn’t back to full strength, this performance will be a testament to the perseverance he, his family and friends have shown despite all odds being against them.

Platinum recording artist Gavin DeGraw is no stranger to the top of the charts. He first broke through with the 2003 release of his debut album, “Chariot,” which sold over a million copies, earned platinum certification and yielded three hit singles: “I Don’t Want to Be,” “Follow Through” and the title-track, “Chariot.” DeGraw’s self-titled second album debuted at No. 1 on the digital sales chart and at No. 7 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart in 2008, earning him his first Top 10 album. It spawned the hit singles “In Love with a Girl,” which Billboard dubbed “a rocking homerun,” and the gold-certified “We Belong Together.” In 2009 DeGraw released “Free” as a gift to his die-hard fans clamoring for recorded versions of his live favorites. He released his third studio album, “Sweeter,” in September of 2011. The album’s first single, “Not Over You,” co-written with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, is a huge chart topping hit, and the just released 2nd single, the title track “Sweeter,” is sure to follow in its footsteps.

Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty, earning him the title “classical music superstar.” An Avery Fisher Prize recipient and Musical America’s 2010 Instrumentalist of the Year, Bell is the Academy of St Martin in the Fields’ newly named Music Director. Bell came to national attention at age 14 in his debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Today he is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra leader and composer who performs his own cadenzas to several of the major concerto repertoire. This season include dates with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Montreal, Dallas, Colorado, Atlanta, San Francisco and National Symphony orchestras. An exclusive Sony Classical artist, “French Impressions,” his latest album of French sonatas with Jeremy Denk was released in January, 2012. Since his first LP recording at 18, Bell has recorded more than 36 CDs garnering Mercury, Grammy (r), Gramophone and Echo Klassik Awards. Joshua has performed on many film scores including “The Red Violin” which won an Oscar and recently recorded “The Flowers of War.” He was named by Billboard as the 2004 Classical Artist of the Year and recently he received the Paul Newman Award for services to children and the arts.

Jackie Evancho was introduced to the world on the show “America’s Got Talent,” where her astonishing vocal talent shined in the competition. “O Holy Night,” Jackie’s major label debut, was released in November 2012, and it was the year’s #1 best-selling debut recording with sales exceeding 1 million. It rocketed into the Billboard 200 at # 2, and the EP’s chart and sales success secured Jackie’s position as the year’s top-selling debut artist as well as the youngest female solo artisit to debut during the SoundScan era. IN addition to its pop chart success, “O Holy Night” reached # 1 on the Billboard Classical Chart and # 2 on the Billboard Holiday chart. Her latest album, “Dream With Me,” her first studio album, debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at # 2 and was certified Gold after only four weeks of release. “Dream With Me,” features a repertoire of classical arias and pop classics handpicked to suit Jackie’s angelic voice. Due to her spectacular successes, in 2011 Jackie was named to Billboard’s “21 Under 21″ list, their annual ranking of the most powerful minors in the music industry. Now at the age of 12, Jackie also continues to cultivate her other musical abilities, learning to play both the violin and piano.

Born in Arezzo, Tuscany and raised in Rome, Vittorio Grigolo was only four when he discovered his passion for music and now his exceptional vocal and dramatic talents have been widely praised by the world’s press. As one of the leading tenors of his generation, he now performs in the world’s most prestigious opera houses. His recent operatic appearances include the lead roles in “Faust,” “Manon,” Lucia di Lammermoor,” and “Rigoletto.” He brings the same energy to his live concert performances as he does to his operatic roles. In 2010 Vittorio collaborated with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a special gala concert performance of Rigoletto in Tel Aviv and at the beginning of 2011 he gave a tour of sold out concerts in Germany and Switzerland. With a gold and platinum -selling solo album, a Grammy nominated recording of Berstein’s “West Side Story” and his album “The Italian Tenor” reaching #1 on the US Billboard Classical album chart, Vittorio is an established recording artist. His second album on Sony Classical, “Arrivederci” includes his personal selection of the most beloved Italian songs and opera arias ever written for the tenor voice.

By Tuesday evening’s end, one couple will be eliminated, as determined by a combination of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes on dances performed on Monday’s performance show. Who among the seven couples will be the next to leave the ballroom?

* DONALD DRIVER and partner PETA MURGATROYD
* ROSHON FEGAN and partner CHELSIE HIGHTOWER
* MELISSA GILBERT and partner MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY
* KATHERINE JENKINS and partner MARK BALLAS
* WILLIAM LEVY and partner CHERYL BURKE
* MARIA MENOUNOS and partner DEREK HOUGH
* JALEEL WHITE and partner KYM JOHNSON

Hosted by Tom Bergeron (“America’s Funniest Home Videos”) and Brooke Burke-Charvet (“Dancing with the Stars” Season Seven Champion), the celebrities perform choreographed dance routines which will be judged by renowned Ballroom judge Len Goodman and dancer/choreographers Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. Viewers may cast their votes for their favorite teams via phone on Monday night during and up to 60 minutes after the “Dancing with the Stars” performance shows. AT&T customers may also vote by texting the word “VOTE” and entering the number that corresponds to the team they want to support (message and data rates may apply).
