‘Lilo & Stitch’ Blu-ray Release to Join ‘Emperor’s New Groove,’ ‘Atlantis’ on June 11

'Lilo & Stitch' on Blu-rayWhen it comes to releasing animated classics from Walt Disney Animation Studios, there appears to be little to no rhyme or reason for the release order and timing — at times it’s just downright mayhem. When Blu-ray releases seem to conveniently coincide with a release date anniversary milestone, such as Mulan’s 15th, and touted as such, it often makes consumers wonder why some films seem to have been forgotten.

Enter Lilo & Stitch which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2012. Unfortunately the year came and went without any fanfare save for a respectable mention at D23′s national ‘Fanniversary’ events. In 2013, however, 11 years after the film’s release, the tides are apparently about to turn.

With still no official confirmation from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment as of yet, Amazon.com began accepting pre-orders for Lilo & Stitch/Stitch Has a Glitch. While it appears there may have been a date associated with the release, not only has Amazon.com removed any references to a release date, it’s actually removed release dates from The Emperor’s New Groove and Atlantis: The Lost Empire which were initially listed with a June 11, 2013 release date. What appears to be final artwork for the covers has been added, however.

As always, we will provide more information as it becomes available to us and such news would appear imminent at this point.

UPDATE: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has now officially confirmed the release of all three movies (and their respective sequels) to be released on Blu-ray on June 11. No details for bonus features have been supplied for any of the releases.

“WIPEOUT” – PREMIERES THURSDAY, MAY 9 (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
As summer temperatures heat up, quirky contestants go down! This season “Wipeout” will hit the 100th episode milestone, and we’ll be celebrating all season long with brand new, over-the-top courses and the return of Jill Wagner to the “Wipeout” family. We’ll have lots of special episodes, including Dirty Jobs, Newlyweds, Exes, Beauty Queens and Brains VS Brawn. Also returning are favorite specials featuring Families, Boss & Employee, Hotties VS Nerds and Blind Date. The infamous Big Balls make their return, along with new obstacles such as Octopushy, Space Pod of Doom and The Miami Pound Machine. The series will be hosted by John Anderson (ESPN’s “SportsCenter”), John Henson (E! Entertainment’s “Talk Soup”) and co-hosted by Jill Wagner (MTV’s “Teen Wolf”). “Wipeout” executive producers are Matt Kunitz (“101 Ways to Leave a Game Show,” “Fear Factor”) and Scott Larsen. Kevin Wehrenberg, Trice Barto and J. Rupert Thompson are co-executive producers. The series is produced by Endemol USA. David Goldberg is the chairman of Endemol North America.

“THE BACHELORETTE” – SPECIAL PREMIERE ON MONDAY, MAY 20 (9:00-11:00 p.m.), FOLLOWING THE FINALE OF “DANCING WITH THE STARS” PERFORMANCE SHOW THAT NIGHT, BEFORE DEBUTING IN ITS REGULAR TIMESLOT ON MONDAY, MAY 27 (8:00-10:01 p.m.)
This season the hit romance reality series will feature its ninth edition with the lucky new Bachelorette – Desiree Hartsock — getting to know 25 fortunate men via a series of social gatherings and exotic, romantic dates, some in groups, some individually. She will introduce some of the men to her family and will visit their hometowns for a slice of their lives in an effort to determine the man with whom she is most compatible. At the end of the journey, filled with drama and surprises against the backdrop of spectacular international settings and featuring innovative twists and special guest stars, the Bachelorette may quite possibly have found true love. But the big question is: After all of this, will she hand out her final rose? And if she does, will the final bachelor accept it and propose? Hosted by Chris Harrison, “The Bachelorette” is a production of Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television. Mike Fleiss and Martin Hilton are the executive producers.

“MOTIVE” – SPECIAL DEBUT ON TUESDAY, MAY 21 (10:01-11:00 p.m.), FOLLOWING THE FINALE OF “DANCING WITH THE STARS THE RESULTS SHOW” THAT NIGHT, BEFORE PREMIERING IN ITS REGULAR TIMESLOT ON THURSDAY, MAY 23 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
When murder is committed, Angie Flynn, a loving, single mother and a damned good detective, along with her partner, Detective Oscar Vega, are on the case, looking for clues that will lead them to the killer. But “Motive” turns the tried-and-true crime drama formula on its head by indentifying the Killer and Victim at the beginning of each episode. These storylines are then further explored via stylized flashbacks that piece together the mysterious connection between these two characters and what drove the Killer to commit murder. “Motive” stars Kristin Lehman (“The Killing,” “Judging Amy”) as Detective Angie Flynn, Louis Ferreira (“SGU Stargate Universe,” “Rookie Blue”) as Detective Oscar Vega, Lauren Holly (“NCIS,” “Chicago Hope,” “Picket Fences”) as Dr. Betty Rogers, Roger Cross (“24,” “Arrow”) as Staff Sergeant Boyd Bloom, Brendan Penny as Detective Brian Lucas and Cameron Bright (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″) as Manny Flynn. “Motive” was created by Daniel Cerone (“Dexter,” “The Mentalist”), who executive-produces the show along with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob LaBelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe. Developed by CTV, the series is produced by Foundation Features and Lark Productions in association with Bell Media, and distributed by NBCUniversal International.

“ROOKIE BLUE” – PREMIERES THURSDAY, MAY 23 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
A group of young and ambitious rookie cops continue to navigate the emotional trials and tribulations of their professional and personal lives. After three years on the job, these rookies are well on their way to becoming experienced officers, but at what cost? It’s been six months since Andy McNally and Nick Collins left for their undercover operation. We return to 15 Division with them – and quickly realize that everything seems to have changed. But that’s what being a cop is: adjusting to new situations, rolling with the punches. Change is constant, and if you don’t adapt, you’re left behind. So when Andy returns to find that Sam Swarek is now a Detective and that he’s moved on, both professionally and personally, she’s going to have to figure out how to deal with it. Meanwhile, Dov’s life gets awkward when a one-night stand with Frank’s goddaughter becomes more complicated; Chris is torn between staying at 15 Division and moving his new family back to his smaller, safer hometown; Traci is learning to work with new detective Swarek, while trying to move on from the loss of her fiancŽ, Jerry Barber; And although Nick and Gail have cemented their relationship, Nick can’t seem to shed the feeling that all is not right between them. Last season our officers got what they wanted and had to deal with the repercussions. This year they will have to look change right in the eye and learn to adapt — leaving them with some big, bold choices to make. “Rookie Blue” stars Missy Peregrym as Andy McNally, Gregory Smith as Dov Epstein, Charlotte Sullivan as Gail Peck, Enuka Okuma as Traci Nash, Travis Milne as Chris Diaz, Peter Mooney as Nick Collins, Ben Bass as Sam Swarek, and this season introduces Priscilla Faia as Chloe Price and Rachael Ancheril as Marlo Cruz. Also starring in the series are Matt Gordon as Oliver Shaw and Lyric Bent as Frank Best. Tassie Cameron, Ilana Frank, David Wellington, Russ Cochrane and John Morayniss are executive producers. “Rookie Blue” is produced by ICF Films and Entertainment One.

“EXTREME MAKEOVER: WEIGHT LOSS EDITION” – PREMIERES TUESDAY, MAY 28 (8:00-10:01 p.m.)
“Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” — The hit series returns for Season Three as transformational specialist Chris Powell, author of the New York Times bestseller Choose to Lose, documents the amazing makeover of 15 courageous, “super obese” people who, in an unprecedented 365 days, set out to safely lose up to half of their body weight, ultimately revealing an amazing metamorphosis. In each of the 13 stand-alone, two-hour episodes, the participants undergo a transformation not only of their bodies, but of who they are as individuals. By assuring they have the proper nourishment and exercise movement, Powell provides a fresh perspective to individuals whose lives have become unmanageable because of their weight. He guides each of the participants through their transformation process by moving into their homes with their families or loved ones. The upcoming season is filled with remarkable and eye-opening changes, including twins who work together to shed weight, a married couple and the inspiring story of an amputee who worked to shed the weight he gained after losing his limb. From the producers of ABC’s new celebrity diving series, “Splash,” “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” is executive-produced by JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, Matt Assmus and Brant Pinvidic. The series is produced by Eyeworks USA.

“WHAT WOULD YOU DO?” – PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, MAY 29 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Using hidden cameras, “What Would You Do?” establishes everyday scenarios and then captures people’s reactions. Whether people are compelled to act or mind their own business, John Qui–ones reports on their split-second and often surprising decision-making process. “What Would You Do?” has won awards from the Chicago International Television Festival, and the Avon Foundation’s 2006 Voice of Change Award for exposing “injustice and wrongdoing against women and bringing the message of domestic violence to the mainstream.”

“MISTRESSES” – PREMIERES MONDAY, JUNE 3 (10:01-11:00 p.m.)
Based on the hit UK television series of the same name, “Mistresses” is a provocative and thrilling drama about the scandalous lives of a sexy and sassy group of four girlfriends, each on her own path to self-discovery: Savannah (“Savi”), a successful career woman working toward the next phase in her life, both professionally and personally; Savi’s free-spirited and capricious baby sister, Josslyn; their friends April, a recent widow and mother of a ten-year-old daughter, and Karen, a therapist with her own thriving practice. These four friends find support and guidance with each other as they brave their turbulent journeys and life’s storms of excitement, secrecy and betrayal, all the while bound by the complex relationships they’ve created. “Mistresses” stars Alyssa Milano as Savannah (“Savi”) Davis, Yunjin Kim as Karen Kim, Rochelle Aytes as April Malloy, Jes Macallan as Josslyn Carver, Brett Tucker as Harry Davis, Jason George as Dominic Taylor and Erik Stocklin as Sam Grey. The series is executive-produced by Rina Mimoun (“Privileged,” “Gilmore Girls”), K.J. Steinberg (“Gossip Girl”), Robert Sertner (“Revenge,” “No Ordinary Family”) and Douglas Rae (“Wuthering Heights,” “Camelot,” “Mistresses,” “Raw,” “Meadowlands”). The series is from ABC Studios.

“CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP” – RETURNS TO THE SCHEDULE SUNDAY, JUNE 23 (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
In “Celebrity Wife Swap,” two mothers of celebrity families, each with opposing values, trade households, lifestyles and children (but not bedrooms) in a week-long challenge. In the first part of the exchange, each mom moves into the other’s home and agrees to follow a manual of “household rules” written by the departing mother, including how to parent, manage their social life, do house work, unwind and more. Everything changes in the second half of the week, when “new mommy” takes charge, introduces her own set of rules and runs the “nest” her way. At the end of the week the two couples meet for the first time. In a raw, honest and highly-charged exchange of views, the couples will make frank assessments of each other and discuss their experiences, having had a very real taste of what life would be like in someone else’s family. “Celebrity Wife Swap” is produced by Tony Yates and Bruce Toms for Zodiak USA.

“WHODUNNIT?” – PREMIERES SUNDAY, JUNE 23 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Anthony E. Zuiker, the creator of the “CSI” franchise, begins production on his first primetime reality series, “Whodunnit?” Cris Abrego partners with Zuiker for the new nine-episode alternative series that puts 13 contestants’ investigative skills to the test in a mystery reality competition. Each week players will use a variety of crime scene investigation techniques to meticulously uncover evidence that will ultimately reveal who among them is the killer. The interactive series will pit 13 amateur sleuths against each other in a quest to solve a series of puzzling murders. Some will form alliances and others will choose to go it alone just to get them closer to the grand prize. The contestants will reside on a glamorous estate where each week they must solve a new crime in order to advance in the game. Failure to solve the crime will lead to a player’s demise, until only three are left. In the final episode, one player will unmask the killer and take home the $250,000 prize. “Whodunnit?” is produced by Dare to Pass and 51 Minds. Zuiker and Abrego are executive producers. Matt Weinberg, president of Dare to Pass, also serves as producer.

Disney Patent Seeks to Ease Airport Security Checkpoint Woes

Disney's Airport Security Screening SystemSometimes it just takes a mouse to build a better mousetrap.

They may never be described as being happy or magical, but if Disney has any say about it, airport security screening areas may become a lot more traveler friendly by addressing checkpoint congestion issues by moving much of the process outside of it.

The existing problem, according to the patent application, is that complying with existing TSA policies is time consuming, with travelers needing to spend most of their time in lines by removing and isolating certain objects from their carry-ons, cleaning out pockets, removing shoes, etc. The process gets exponentially more difficult when families have small children who need additional assistance, slowing down the process and creating a chain-reaction, directly affecting other passengers.

Orlando International, the home airport of Walt Disney World, no doubt sees the worst of this current configuration and the TSA has responded by creating designated lines which are meant to sort out families from single travelers, novices from pros. However noble in its intentions, however, anyone who’s ever passed through the OIA since this program has started has no doubt detected its futility.

Enter patent application 20130069759, ‘Airport Security Screening System and Method.’ Developed by the Walt Disney World Guest Experience team (the folks behind Disney’s Magical Express and Resort Airline Check-in), the propose system moves the angst and pressure from prepping for the TSA security checkpoint by moving it outside the line, where families are able to sort out their items that require special attention before the checkpoint at their leisure, no longer impacting other travelers trying to get through.

In its most complete implementation, the system replaces existing x-ray scanners with new 3D imaging systems with smart software that accept the special, pre-loaded carts. The carts are made of either plastic or ceramic, presumably to not confuse metal detectors, and are configured so that bags can go on the bottom while separate trays are offered for coats, personal or large electronics, liquids, etc. By separating these items into specific, known locations, the imaging security software can then be fine-tuned for optimal performance.

Given completely replacing scanners in airports is a lofty goal at best, the inventors have provided an alternate plan in which the cart’s trays are simply removable, allowing the cart to be completely assembled while negotiating the airport, but then able to break down to retrofit existing scanners. The cart itself is further explained in patent application 20130069326, ‘Airport Divestment and Luggage Cart.’

Starbucks Locations at Disney Parks Update

Yesterday, the official Disney Parks blog offered some new details on the Disneyland location of Starbucks, as the Market House is slated to close next month to begin the conversion for the parks’ Starbucks location, opening this fall — an exact closure date has not yet been announced. This will finalize plans for the Disneyland Resort where the first location has already been thriving at Disney California Adventure at the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Café.

On the east coast, we’ve been keeping tabs on the development as plans for the Magic Kingdom and Epcot have already been announced and — in the case of the former — are well underway.

The most recent date we have for a scheduled opening for Starbucks at the Magic Kingdom is June 19, 2013.

Today we also received additional information for the Epcot location which will be at the current Fountainview Ice Cream Shop. While preliminary reports had the location closing this month for the conversion with a re-opening for summer, we have learned that the current plans have the location closing on April 8, 2013 with a re-opening slated for fall. A new ice cream shop in France, where the bakery previously was, will open in June.

Locations for Disney’s Hollywood studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom have yet to be confirmed.

Disney to Co-Produce IMAX 3D Space Film

IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX; TSX: IMX) and The Walt Disney Studios, a division of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), today announced an agreement to produce and distribute the latest IMAX® 3D cinematic space spectacle from acclaimed filmmaker Toni Myers, who has been crafting mind-blowing movie experiences for IMAX audiences for more than 40 years.

Myers’ upcoming 3D film, which is still untitled, will use IMAX’s extremely high-resolution photography and videography to offer breathtaking, illuminating views of our home planet from space, exploring the astonishing changes that have occurred on Earth in just the past several decades.

Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film will explore mankind’s future on — and off — the planet, increasing our understanding of the solar system, while also traveling light-years to other star systems to ponder the possibilities of “Goldilocks,” an Earth-like planet. The film is expected to be released in 2015.

“Disney has always been a leader in creating immersive fantasy worlds for audiences, but we know there’s no more immersive world than the real one,” said Alan Bergman, President, The Walt Disney Studios. “This is a bird’s eye view of our incredible universe and our future in it, and we’re looking forward to diving in with the perfect collaborators, Toni Myers and IMAX.”

“We’re thrilled to collaborate on our first joint production with Disney,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Entertainment. “Toni Myers and her team have given us films that have been educating, delighting and astonishing IMAX audiences for many years, and we look forward to continuing the journey with this latest spectacle.”

Myers has been editing, writing, producing and directing films specifically tailored for The IMAX Experience® since 1971. Her most recent documentary feature film, 2010′s acclaimed Hubble 3D, has grossed nearly $53 million in IMAX® theaters to date.

“The 1990 IMAX film Blue Planet was the first time we pointed the IMAX® cameras from space back to Earth to reveal, on a grand scale, the changes being made to our planet by both natural and human forces,” Myers said. “It’s marvelous and important to have this new opportunity to show what has happened to our planet since then. The International Space Station is a unique and perfect platform from which to see how our home is evolving, and at the same time explore our exciting future in other worlds.”

‘The Emperor’s New Groove,’ ‘Atlantis’ on Blu-ray in June

'The Emperor's New Groove' on Blu-rayAdmittedly we’ve sounded the alarm for the dual movie pack of Atlantis: The Lost Empire/Atlantis: Milo’s Return before, but this time we’re almost certain it’s going to happen. Ahead of any official announcement (which is expected later today if the pattern holds), Amazon.com has begun accepting pre-orders for the movie/sequel pair on Blu-ray for a release date of June 11, 2013. This was not the case when we believed it to be released alongside of Mulan, Brother Bear and Hunchback of Notre Dame and their respective sequels earlier this year.

In addition, Amazon.com is also listing the Blu-ray adaptation of The Emperor’s New Groove on June 11, 2013, but we do know in fact that Disney plans on releasing this alongside its own direct-to-video sequel, Kronk’s New Groove, as Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released a few clips yesterday in support of the pair (but no trailer and no official date).

As usual, we will provide more information as it becomes available to us.

UPDATE: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has now officially confirmed the release of all three movies (and their respective sequels) to be released on Blu-ray on June 11. No details for bonus features have been supplied for any of the releases.
