Disney D23 Announces First International Expo in Japan, October 12 – 14

The Walt Disney Company Japan announced today that it will stage the first-ever D23 Expo Japan, a special event for Disney fans created by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. D23 Expo Japan, the first Expo to be held outside the U.S., will feature an array of engaging presentations, hosted by senior Disney creative executives, showcasing what’s on the horizon from across The Walt Disney Company, including theme parks, movies, television, music, and interactive gaming. Fans will enjoy unique experiences; have the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind merchandise and collectibles; meet many of their favorite Disney characters; and delight in countless other surprises. D23 Expo Japan will take place October 12–14, 2013, at the Tokyo Disney Resort® in the Maihama area. Expo ticketing and program information will be announced in March.

D23 Expo Japan will also feature two special exhibitions celebrating landmark Disney milestones. First, to pay homage to The Walt Disney Company’s 90th Anniversary, D23 and the Walt Disney Archives will present Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, featuring nine decades of treasures from the Archives’ vast collection. Plus, the Tokyo Disney Resort will celebrate its 30th year with a special retrospective exhibit.?This special exhibition, presented by OrientalLand, operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, celebrates this milestone year by making D23 Expo Japan possible. Disney fans from around the globe flocked to Anaheim, Calif., for the first D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, in September 2009, followed by a second in August 2011. The next D23 Expo will take place August 9–11, 2013, at the Anaheim Convention Center and will feature: the 2013 Disney Legends Ceremony; a special exhibit from the Walt Disney Archives; the Collectors Forum, where Disney fans can buy, sell, and trade Disney collectibles, memorabilia, and merchandise; an all-new Fan Art Contest themed to the upcoming 50th anniversary of Mary Poppins, and a massive show floor full of special opportunities to see what’s on the horizon for Disney around the world.

‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ Nine New Hi-Res Stills Reveal Darker Side of Oz

In support of recently released clips, Walt Disney Studios has also provided us with nine new stills from its film, Oz the Great and Powerful, which debuts in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2013.

Quite a few of the new stills feature China Girl (voiced by Joey King) as well as Oscar Diggs/Oz (James Franco) and Finley (voice of Zach Braff) exploring the ruins of China Country. We also get a few additional looks at the darker side of the land including the forest as well as Evanora (Rachel Weisz) getting her witch on as well as some up close and personals between Diggs and Glinda (Michelle Williams).

Oz The Great and Powerful imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot — fame and fortune are his for the taking — that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry — Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ ‘Argument Over Oz’ Clip Teases Plotpoints

A new clip from Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful has surfaced, with this one courtesy of Walt Disney Studios New Zealand and titled ‘Argument Over Oz.’ The clip features those wacky sister witches Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Theodora (Mila Kunis) as they debate over the credibility of the newly dubbed Wizard, Oscar Diggs (James Franco) and whether he is able to save the land from the tyranny of the mysterious Wicked Witch of the West. Evanora also begins to question Theodora’s loyalty, fearing/accusing her of pledging allegiances to the Wicked Witch of the West, which elicits quite an interesting response.

Perhaps what’s most telling about the clip though is it would appear that Evanora is the only character who speaks with a foreign accent (Weisz is British afterall) and as far as I’m concerned, that’s far deeper of a mystery than the true identity of the Wicked Witch of the West. It would at least make more sense if Weisz hailed from Australia, in which case we could see the obvious confusion between Aussie and Ozzie. Traditionally in American film and television, the British accent is reserved primarily for ancient Romans and French people, so perhaps Evanora is just 2200 years old.

‘Disney Infinity’ Cars Play Set Officially Announced (Screenshots, Trailer, Figures)

Although it had already been announced (and confirmed our initial reports), Disney Interactive today noted that at launch, ‘Disney Infinity’ will have a Cars play set available to purchase. This makes Cars the fourth officially announced play set (along with Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles) and the first add-on pack.

As we reported (and confirmed) yesterday, the Cars play set allows gamers to take on the role of Lightning McQueen, Mater, Holley Shiftwell and Francesco Bernoulli and enter the virtual world of Radiator Springs, where they will prepare the town for a big international racing event.

Key highlights of the play set add-on include:

Racing and Customization: players will be able to race through town on full sized tracks and pull off amazing, gravity defying feats in a no-holds-barred stunt park. Additionally, players can customize the town, exploring the outskirts of the city and towing all types of vehicles to make way for tourists.
Play Set: The Cars play set adds driving/racing play mechanics and track pieces to the Toy Box allowing players to create all-new racing challenges, build and customize tracks and much more.
Toy Box mode: Lightning, Mater, Holley and Francesco are able to interact with all of the previously revealed characters from The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean.

‘Celebrity Wife Swap’ Returns with Kate Gosselin, Kendra Wilkinson, Mark McGrath and Coolio

Season Two of ‘Celebrity Wife Swap’ kicks off with reality TV mom Kate Gosselin and former Playboy Magazine cover girl Kendra Wilkinson on Tuesday, February 26 at 8:00 pm ET/PT on the ABC Television Network.

In the series, two mothers of celebrity families, each with opposing values, trade households, lifestyles and children (but not bedrooms) in a week-long challenge. In the first part of the exchange, each mom moves into the other’s home and agrees to follow a manual of ‘household rules’ written by the departing mother, including how to parent, manage their social life, do house work, unwind and more. Everything changes in the second half of the week, when ‘new mommy’ takes charge, introduces her own set of rules and runs the ‘nest’ her way. At the end of the week the two couples meet for the first time. In a raw, honest and highly-charged exchange of views, the couples will make frank assessments of each another and discuss their experiences, having had a very real taste of what life would be like in someone else’s family.

In the season premiere episode, ‘Kate Gosselin / Kendra Wilkinson,’ reality TV mom Kate Gosselin is living with her eight children in rural Pennsylvania. As a single mother raising twin girls Cara and Mady (12) and eight-year-old sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel, Kate lives by a rigid set of home rules. She cooks, cleans and shops, all while working to support her family.

Kendra Wilkinson, perhaps best known as a Playboy Magazine cover girl and Hugh Hefner’s former girlfriend, resides in Los Angeles with former-NFL husband Hank and their four-year-old son, Hank IV, aka ‘Little Hank.’ Kendra and Hank have a very relaxed parenting style in which they allow ‘Little Hank’ the freedom to learn and grow without any harsh guidelines. Hank is a supportive husband who pampers his wife by cooking for her, helping out around the house and planning ‘girls’ nights out’ for Kendra and friends. The family also has a full-time housekeeper/nanny, Rosa, who runs the household so that Kendra can relax during the day and enjoy her free time.

When Kate touches down in Los Angeles, she tries to get used to relaxing — an entirely new concept to this working mom of eight. Meanwhile Kendra struggles, plunging head-first into the chaos of caring for eight kids. It’s a comic turn of events as Kendra tries to put all the kids to bed while Kate is treated to a girls’ night out. As the week progresses, Kendra continues to juggle all of her new responsibilities while Kate relishes her ‘me’ time, far away from household chores and obligations.

On March 5, it’s Coolio’s and Mark McGrath’s turn. Coolio and his girlfriend, Mimi, and her three children — Majaniek (14), Javante (10) and Tariq (5) — live in a suburban community in Las Vegas. When he’s not touring or hanging out with friends, Coolio spends the majority of his time sleeping or relaxing at home, while Mimi works as a bartender and an exotic dancer, in addition to taking care of their home and raising her three children.

Mark McGrath, who is perhaps best known as the front man of the ’90s rock band Sugar Ray, and his wife, Carin, are parents to two-year-old twins Lydon and Hartley.

When self-sufficient Mimi arrives in Los Angeles, CA to swap lives with Carin, she is surprised to see a maid, a nanny and Carin’s parents — who live with them full time. Mimi is flabbergasted when she sees how the twins have complete control over the household. She also zeroes in on Mark’s ‘helicopter parenting’ and thinks that his hovering over everyone’s interaction with the twins is a problem.

It’s a far cry from the standoffish behavior Coolio displays when Carin arrives: Sleeping the day away and hanging out with his friends, he spends little time at home with the kids or helping with the household duties. And when it comes time to implement her own set of house rules, Mimi discovers that Coolio is less than quick to accept her terms.

‘Disney Infinity’ Online Listings Unearth New Details, Confirm Reports

With just a few months to go until ‘Disney Infinity’ hits the shelves, etailers around the world have begun listing the game and its various components and accessories, offering us a glimpse of what we can expect on its launch date in June.

Amazon.com as well as several others have already begun listing the starter pack for consoles which includes Nintendo Wii and Wii U, Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Curiously enough, they (and several other etailers) also list the same starter pack for the same price for the Nintendo 3DS. This is somewhat telling since the 3DS version is expected to be essentially a completely scaled down experience due to hardware constraints, so selling an entire starter pack for it at full retail seems a bit ambitious to say the least. Just to expand on that, we have been told by Disney Interactive that there will not be any software-only version of the product, so if you wish to play it on both your Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii (or any other console), you will be required to purchase the full starter pack for each, despite the fact that the hardware is fairly independent of the software.

Also listed for pre-order are some of the 17 or so additional figures that will be available at launch including Mike Wazowski, Davy Jones, Syndrome, Violet, Captain Barbossa, Dash and Mrs. Incredible.

Our report that a Cars play set would be available at launch was also confirmed, but it appears the only etailer currently listing it that we could find is Entertainment Earth (we presume the price is incorrectly posted and have notified them as such). Their description goes on to confirm our original reports that the play set will include Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell while Tow Mater and Franceso Bernoulli figures will be available separately. Interestingly enough, Entertainment Earth’s description also confirms our report of The Lone Ranger being supported in the future.

Lastly, while we anticipate more characters being announced for launch as well as a full line of accessories for display and power disc keeping, one other item of note we found was a book titled Disney Infinity: Infinite Possibilities. According to the description, this 80-page companion book to the highly anticipated Disney Infinity video game will introduce players to the beloved Disney and Pixar characters and worlds featured in the game. Players will learn all about their favorite characters, including Captain Jack Sparrow, Sulley, Lightning McQueen and The Incredibles. In addition, this first companion book will explore all six initial Play Sets, such as the worlds of Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Cars as well as provide tips on building entire worlds in the Toy Box mode straight from the game’s creators.

The book is the only item we found domestically with a specific release date of June 18, which coincidentally when we have been reporting ‘Disney Infinity’ to be released. In the UK, June 28 is being listed as the release date for ‘Disney Infinity’ while in France, it appears to be July 15.
