‘The Avengers,’ ‘John Carter’ in Running for Visual Effects Academy Award

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that ten films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 85th Academy Awards, among which can be found Marvel’s The Avengers from Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios’John Carter. Also among the contenders is Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which is a technical notch for Marvel, speaking purely from the intellectual property perspective.

The other films being considered for nomination in the category are: Cloud Atlas, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Life of Pi, Prometheus, Skyfall and Snow White and the Huntsman.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 3. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’ to be Directed by Co-Writer Jennifer Lee

Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) taps Jennifer Lee to join Chris Buck at the helm of its 53rd full-length animated feature Frozen, which is slated for the big screen on November 27, 2013. Lee, who has contributed to the film’s screenplay, is one of the screenplay writers of this year’s hit arcade-hopping adventure Wreck-It Ralph.

Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, Frozen is the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

Lee’s screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights is being produced by Troika Pictures. She has an original screenplay in development with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and her original script “Lucid Dreams” was optioned by Wolfgang Peterson’s Radiant Productions. Lee holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire.

Buck directed (with Kevin Lima) Disney’s 1999 high-swinging feature Tarzan, which won an Oscar® and a Golden Globe® for Best Music/Original Song (Phil Collins’ ‘You’ll Be in My Heart’). He directed (with Ash Brannon) 2007’s Oscar-nominated Surf’s Up for Sony Pictures Animation. His credits within animation also include 1989’s The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under (1990) and Pocahontas (1995).

With original songs by Tony®-award winner Robert Lopez (‘The Book of Mormon,’ ‘Avenue Q’) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (‘In Transit’), Frozen journeys into theaters November 27, 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Disney Cruise Line Recognized by Industry for Conservation Efforts

In recognition for making notable contributions to advance the environmental aspects of cruising, Disney Cruise Line was presented with the Environmental Initiative Award at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards 2012. Disney Cruise Line is dedicated to minimizing its impact on the environment through efforts focused on utilizing new technologies, increasing fuel efficiency, minimizing waste and supporting conservation worldwide.

“Our persistent focus on innovative environmental initiatives starts with developing leading-edge fuel and energy efficiencies on our ships, but it doesn’t stop there,” said Bert Swets, vice president, marine and technical operations at Disney Cruise Line. “Our approach on shore extends to conservation and animal research efforts on our private island, Castaway Cay, inspiring and educating children and families to care about the environment, and engaging the communities in our ports of call.”

The Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards judging panel was comprised of industry and subject-matter experts from around the world.

Innovative Fuel and Energy Efficiencies
Disney Cruise Line made history as the first cruise line to use an innovative, non-toxic hull coating that increases fuel efficiency by reducing surface resistance in open water and continues to maximize fuel and energy efficiencies by automating onboard air conditioning systems for optimum use; repurposing air conditioning condensation for both laundry and deck cleaning, saving tons of fresh water each day, and installing energy-efficient lighting.

Recycling
Across the four ships in the Disney fleet, more than 650 tons of metals, glass, plastic and paper are eliminated from traditional waste streams each year through recycling, more than 5,000 tons to date.

Onshore Activities
No other cruise line incorporates conservation and animal research quite like Disney does. On Castaway Cay, Disney researchers are conducting a multi-year project studying how transplanted long-spined sea urchins can rebuild coral reefs. Guests may participate in a hands-on training experience with live stingrays during a 60-minute, instructor-led educational program.

Creative Storytelling Inspires and Educates
Disney Cruise Line shares environmental programs and educates others as an integral part of the company’s goal to inspire children and adults to take environmental action in their everyday lives. Guests can take an exclusive backstage look at environmental efforts through the “Behind the Waves” video and see characters from “The Lion King” inspire environmental action by showcasing small steps everyone can take in “Safety Smart Goes Green.”

Disney strives to engage the communities in our ports of call in unique and memorable ways. By tapping into the company’s legendary storytelling, Disney created an activity booklet in cooperation with Friends of the Environment to inspire youth to learn more about protecting native species and ecology in The Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line sponsors and provides guidance for summer eco-camps in ports of call across The Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, Disney invites U.S. Forest Rangers to sail onboard each of our Alaskan voyages in order to offer lectures, host special children’s activities and engage guests in ways that ultimately create a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local environment and wildlife.

‘Terminales’ Begins Production in Boston for ABC Family

Production begins today on the ABC Family drama series pilot “Terminales,” starring Italia Ricci (Unnatural History), Mary Page Keller (‘NYPD Blue’), Vondie Curtis-Hall (‘ER’), Aisha Dee (‘I Hate My Teenage Daughter’), Richard Brancatisano (The Elephant Princess), Abhi Sinha (The Social Network), Haley Ramm (Red State) and guest stars Barry Watson (’7th Heaven’) and Rebecca Schull (‘Wings’).

Produced by Lionsgate and Televisa USA, the one-hour English language pilot follows twenty-something April (Ricci), a smart and quick witted aspiring journalist who is trying to work her way up the ladder at a Boston newspaper by impressing her hard-nosed editor, Lawrence (Curtis-Hall). When not pursuing the latest scoop, April tries to balance her ambitious career with her family – her widowed mom Sara (Keller), grandma Emma (Schull) and rebellious little sister Brenna (Ramm). Disney D23 Announces Preliminary Event Schedule for 2013 with Return of Fanniversary Tour

In 2013, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will reach out to fans across the country through an exciting roster of uniquely magical Disney experiences.

Starting in March, D23 takes the party on the road once again with D23’S second ‘Disney Fanniverary Celebration.’ The event, which played to crowds of enthusiastic fans across the U.S. earlier this year, will commemorate dozens of magical milestones, each celebrating an anniversary in 2013. Said The Hollywood Reporter of the 2012 event, ‘It’s a must for Disney fanatics and a fascinating look at Disney history.’ Hosted by Disney Archivists and D23 Team Members, D23’s Disney Fanniversary Celebration events will be held in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., and will revisit some of the most beloved theme park attractions, animated and live-action films, TV series, and nearly 90 years of Disney history. Fanniversary events will be open to the public, with special admission and surprises created especially for D23 Members in attendance.

D23 will once again partner with The Walt Disney Studios, offering members access to advance screenings of the latest Disney animated and live-action feature films. In 2012, D23 Members were among the first to see Wreck-It Ralph, Frankenweenie and Brave.

Mickey’s of Glendale, the Walt Disney Imagineering employee store in Glendale, Calif., will open its doors exclusively to D23 on Saturday, April 13 and Saturday, June 8. Members will have an opportunity to purchase limited-edition merchandise and view the park-like grounds at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts’ creative ‘think tank.’ Additionally, in 2013, D23 will partner with Disney Store in key locations to host exclusive and one-of-a-kind events for our D23 Members.

Throughout the year, D23 will continue its popular series of movie screenings at The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. D23’s ’50 and Fabulous’ series returns, honoring Disney favorites celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2013, including screenings of Son of Flubber (April 13), Summer Magic (June 8), and The Sword in the Stone (September 15). ‘From the Vaults’ also returns, bringing favorite live-action films back to the big screen, including the digitally restored 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on November 16.

The year also includes ‘D23 Day at the Walt Disney Studio Archives,’ the popular member-only tours of the historic Studio Lot and Walt Disney Archives in Burbank. Tours will take place May 4, June 1, September 14, and November 2.

In the fall, during Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, D23′s ‘Sip & Stroll’ event will return (September 2013). And during the holiday season, D23 will bring back the popular offering ‘Disney and Dickens’ (in Burbank in December) and introduce the all-new festive D23′S ‘Holiday Splendor’ at Walt Disney World Resort in December.

The grandest fan event of them all will take place August 9–11 at the Anaheim Convention Center when the ‘D23 Expo 2013: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event’ brings all the wonderful worlds of Disney together under one enormous roof for three days. From The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts to Disney Consumer Products and our numerous media networks, guests will revel in new discoveries, special panels and presentations, movie screenings, celebrity appearances and autograph signings, and gain fresh insights into movies, television, theme parks, animation, Disney history, and more. Special ‘early bird’ discounted tickets are available through December 31, 2012, and D23 Members receive an additional discount on tickets as well as special perks at the Expo.

More 2013 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival Details; New Food Options; ‘Flower Power’ Line-up

A blooming bounty of festival firsts will welcome Disney guests to the 20th Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival presented by HGTV March 6-May 19, 2013 at Walt Disney World Resort. First, the news:

Epcot chefs will cook up first-time festival food and beverage fun, with special cooking stations offering exclusive-to-the-festival bites along the park’s World Showcase promenade.
A new circus-like “Land of Oz Play Area,” based on the Disney fantastical film adventure Oz: The Great and Powerful to be released in March 2013, will debut a kaleidoscope of interactive fun.
Disney topiary experts will grow, shape and manicure a Fab Five Disney character topiary with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck (with Daisy Duck in a cameo) featured in a celebratory floral cookout scene in living topiary color at the park’s front entrance.
New illuminated gardens in the park’s Future World and World Showcase will cast a colorful glow over each festival evening.

Throughout the 75-day garden party, guests will discover festival surprises around every corner including new topiary triumphs, colorful garden displays, a butterfly bounty, HGTV celebrity designers, interactive gardening seminars and whimsical children’s play areas. On weekends, top Flower Power rockers of the 1960s and ’70s will perform.

Every Friday through Sunday, HGTV design celebrities will host Festival Center seminars. During opening weekend, March 8-10, Chris Lambton of “Going Yard” will appear; other designers scheduled to take the stage include Brandon Johnson of “My Yard Goes Disney” and Meg Caswell of “Meg’s Great Rooms.”

Festival-themed flavors: Guests will discover culinary creations and refreshing libations at multiple festival-themed food and beverage locations. Chefs are tweaking the menu to include backyard barbecue and a variety of garden-inspired and global tastes. Around the World Showcase promenade
Fab Five topiary barbecue: 14-foot-tall topiary Goofy will bobble an anniversary cake while Donald and Daisy play badminton, Mickey fires up the grill, Pluto swipes a link of hot dogs and Minnie chills out on a colorful blanket of blossoms. At Epcot Front Entrance
Land of Oz Play Area: This interactive new children’s play zone will feature play systems adorned with giant flowers and designed to stretch kids’ imaginations and muscles. Midway-style games, red-and-white circus-themed tents and the “Oz Movie Garden” of intriguing plants will capture the spirit of the upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful. Also on tap: fun games, photo opportunities, the “great and powerful Oz’s” crashed hot-air balloon and lush plants inspired by the movie. On the Imagination Walkway
Illuminated Gardens: Every night when the sun sets, many of the festival’s world-famous Disney topiaries and gardens will twinkle and shine in a new light. Throughout World Showcase and Future World
Monsters University topiary: Floral representations of Mike and Sulley from the hit Disney-Pixar film Monsters, Inc. and stars of Disney-Pixar’s June 2013 release, Monsters University, will join the festivities as new topiary family members. On the Future World Walkway
Phineas and Ferb topiary: The popular Disney Channel animated celebs limit their shenanigans to go green for a family photo-op. Behind Spaceship Earth
“Radiator Springs” interactive play zone: Race car Lightning McQueen and tow truck “Mater” of the Disney-Pixar film Cars 2 will be the well-maintained topiary stars of this play area. On the Test Track Walkway
Flower Power Firsts: 1970s top disco band The Village People (April 19-21) and 1960s singer-songwriter Tommy Roe (May 3-5) bring on the Flower Power beat when they take the concert stage. At America Gardens Theatre

And a new twist:

Fawn’s Butterfly House: Eight fanciful fairy topiaries of Pixie Hollow, including Tinker Bell, Fawn, Vidia and Terrence, take over the Butterfly House this year where hundreds of colorful winged beauties flit to life. On the Imagination Walkway

In all, more than 100 topiaries, 240 floating mini-gardens, dozens of flower towers and sweeping beds of multi-colored blooms will add floral splendor to the park landscape. Daily hands-on gardening seminars, and other Festival Center events will offer innovative ideas, design tips and gardening know-how to park guests.

The Flower Power concert series kicks off March 6-10 with Micky Dolenz (“I’m a Believer”) and continues each weekend with pop favorites including:

March 15-17: Chubby Checker & The Wildcats
March 22-24: The Guess Who
March 29-31: Nelson
April 5-7: The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie
April 12-14: Paul Revere & the Raiders
April 19-21: The Village People (new!)
April 26-28: The Orchestra, Featuring Former Members of ELO and ELO II
May 3-5: Tommy Roe (new!)
May 10-12: Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone
May 17-19: Starship starring Mickey Thomas.

While Disney guests celebrate spring during their festival visit, they also can explore the reimagined, design-centric Test Track Presented by Chevrolet, the hang-gliding sensation of Soarin’ and other high-tech Future World marvels. In World Showcase, where the spotlight will shine on topiaries of Disney princesses, storybook characters and even pandas and trolls, guests will discover the attractions, shops and restaurants that represent cultures and cuisine of 11 countries.
