Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq:NFLX) and The Disney/ABC Television Group (NYSE:DIS) today announced a new multi-year licensing agreement that will make Netflix the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for one of the most popular shows on Disney Junior, ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates,’ as well as fan favorite Disney XD show ‘Tron: Uprising.’ In addition, ‘Handy Manny,’ ‘Special Agent Oso’ and ‘JoJo’s Circus’ will also be available for members in the U.S. to watch instantly later this month.

“Disney and Netflix have shared a long and mutually beneficial relationship and this deal expands on the incredible line-up of Disney content already available for our members,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “Families love Netflix and we know they especially love the imaginative and high-quality TV shows and movies from Disney. We’re excited to bring Jake and the Never Land Pirates, a terrific show for families with preschoolers, to our members.”

“We are delighted that Netflix’s members and their young children will be able to experience a selection of tremendously popular original series from Disney Junior and Disney XD,” said Janice Marinelli, President, Disney-ABC Domestic Television. “Netflix is a highly valued partner and a terrific platform for families to enjoy these heartfelt characters and entertaining stories.”

Disney Junior’s Annie Award-winning series, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, is a music-filled interactive treasure hunt that introduces a crew of kid pirates — leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby — and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Mr. Smee, from Disney’s classic Peter Pan. Like all Disney Junior programming, Jake and the Never Land Pirates is guided by an established curriculum that nurtures multiple areas of child development: physical, emotional, social and cognitive; thinking and creative skills, as well as moral and ethical development.

Disney’s ‘Planes’ Hi-Res Stills, Fun Facts and Activity Sheets

(Pictured) DUSTY (voiced by Dane Cook). ©2013 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

In support of Planes from DisneyToon Studios, landing in theaters on August 9, 2013, Disney has provided us with newly released hi-res stills, along with some fun facts regarding the film, inspired by  Pixar’s world of Cars.

From above the world of Cars comes Disney’s Planes, an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

The newly released images have been added to our gallery below. Click on any of the thumbnails to see a larger version. If the resize arrow appears, click it to view the image in its original resolution.

In addition, Disney has provided us with these children’s activities for the film which include coloring pages and a connect-the-dots activity, which you can download here.

DISNEY’S PLANES FUN FACTS:

Getting Real

  • ALL IN THE FAMILY – Director Klay Hall is a lifelong aviation enthusiast who comes from a long line of aviation enthusiasts. Hall’s father was a pilot in the Navy and his grandfather also took to the skies as a pilot.
  • NOW HEAR THIS – To bolster the authenticity of the flight scenes, the production team recorded real-life planes, including crop dusters for Dusty, some old bi-planes, a twin engine aircraft and Navy F-18s for the scene that features fighter jets Echo and Bravo.
  • MAP IT OUT – Filmmakers consulted with real pilots to determine the ‘Wings Around The Globe’ race course, considering the planes’ need to refuel as well as the appeal of the locales.
  • COMFORT ZONE – Filmmakers utilize moviemaking magic to underscore the story. For example, stereoscopic supervisor Jason Carter says that close-ups of Dusty — the protagonist — are strategically placed a bit closer to the audience than close-ups of his adversary Ripslinger. The idea, says Carter, is to subtly invite the audience into Dusty’s inner circle, while keeping Ripslinger at arm’s length — literally.
  • DEFINE FEAR – To ensure authenticity in the story, filmmakers consulted a phobia specialist to zero in on Dusty’s fear of heights. Not only did they learn how acrophobia might manifest itself in Dusty’s actions — sweating, dizziness — they got tips on how to help the crop duster overcome his fear.

Building Character

  • IS IT A PLANE? – Many of the airplane designs in Disney’s Planes are completely fictional and some are inspired (in part) by a number of planes.
    • Dusty, for example, was inspired by the Air Tractor 502, Cessna and the Air Dromader.
    • Seasoned Navy vet Skipper is an F4U Corsair fighter plane, developed in 1938 at the request of the U.S. Navy and first utilized in WWII. The Corsair was considered the most powerful fighter-based aircraft in the world at the time and was the first U.S single-engine fighter to exceed 400 miles per hour in level flight. Recognized for its ‘W’-shaped wings, the Corsair’s small body and powerful engine created a highly successful warfare weapon.
    • El Chupacabra, known in Disney’s Planes for his dashing personality, sports the design of a Gee Bee, an aircraft that dates back to the early days of air racing. Designed by Granville Brothers Aircraft in the early 1930s, the Gee Bee planes were built with a teardrop-shaped fuselage in an effort to reduce drag and enable knife-edge turns without losing altitude.
  • MEET CHUG – Filmmakers traveled to Leaders Clear Lake Airport in Minnesota while touring regional airports in the Midwest for inspiration for their Propwash Junction setting. Hidden in a grove of evergreen trees was the charming, but rickety inspiration for Chug, the enthusiastic fuel truck who’s not only Dusty’s buddy, but his biggest fan.

Talent Tidbits

  • FAMILY TIES – While actress Teri Hatcher was lending her voice to Dottie — the pragmatic mechanic who keeps a watchful eye on Dusty — daughter Emerson, age 15, stepped in to voice a reporter pitty in the film.
  • THAT SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR – John Ratzenberger, who’s lent his voice to some of animation’s most memorable characters, has a cameo in Disney’s Planes as a pitty.
  • REUNITED – Top Gun stars Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer have a high-flying reunion of sorts in Disney’s Planes as fighter jets Echo and Bravo, respectively.

Disney’s Planes features the vocal talents of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Carlos Alazraqui, Priyanka Chopra, Gabriel Iglesias, Roger Craig Smith, Colin Cowherd, Sinbad, Oliver Kalkofe, Brent Musburger, Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer.

‘Mary Poppins,’ ‘Once Upon A Time’ and ‘Oz’ to Highlight D23 Expo’s ‘Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives’

Tik Tok from Disney's 'Return to Oz'D23: The Official Disney Fan Club and the Walt Disney Archives are proud to announce the return of the ‘Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives’ exhibit to the D23 Expo. During the D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center, August 9 – 11, 2013, this all-new exhibit curated specifically for the D23 Expo 2013 will feature: the 50th anniversary of Mary Poppins, ABC’s hit television series ‘Once Upon A Time,’ and a look at the longstanding connection between Disney and L. Frank Baum’s beloved series of books about the land of Oz.

‘Treasures’ will showcase a selection of crown jewels from the Walt Disney Archives Collection, many of which will be displayed publicly for the first time by the Archives. As the 50th anniversary of Mary Poppins approaches, the Archives will be presenting a wide array of pieces from the Academy Award®-winning 1964 film including concept art and matte paintings, Mary and Bert’s carousel horses, the snow globe from the ‘Feed the Birds’ sequence, costumes worn by many of the central characters and the recently acquired carpet bag, which Mary carries with her when she arrives at the Banks’ household. Also part of the exhibit will be the FanArtGallery, themed to Mary Poppins. D23 Members were invited to submit their work as part of the D23 Expo Fan Art Contest, and the winners’ colorful creations will be displayed in this year’s gallery.

Patchwork Girl costume from Disney's 'Rainbow Road to Oz'On the heels of the global success of Oz The Great and Powerful, the Archives is proud to assemble artifacts illustrating Disney’s long association with L. Frank Baum’s Oz books. Highlights include a costume from 1957’s ‘Rainbow Road to Oz’ — a segment from The Fourth Anniversary Show, which celebrated Walt’s four years on television, starring many of the Mickey Mouse Club’s Mouseketeers — as well as concept art from unrealized attractions and Disney Studio productions. Also featured are props and costume pieces from 1985’s Return to Oz including the Tik-Tok puppet, ‘Powder of Life’ tin, and Dorothy’s costume and slippers. And, of course, there will be an assortment of costumes from this year’s Oz The Great and Powerful.

Now finishing its second hit season, ‘Once Upon A Time’ has become a huge hit among Disney fans for its ability to remain true to many of Disney’s classic stories while expanding their worlds with a modern twist. The Archives is honored to be presenting a selection of elegantly designed costumes from the show.

Blocks from Disney's 'Mary Poppins'The D23 Expo 2013 will also feature the Disney Legends Awards — a tradition that pays tribute to the talented men and women who have made indelible contributions to the Disney legacy; the return of the D23 Expo Dream Store, featuring a wide selection of unique merchandise; an expanded Collectors Forum, where Disney fans can buy, sell and trade Disney collectibles, memorabilia and merchandise — and this year’s Forum will also include the worlds of Marvel and Star Wars — plus amazing live events, special celebrity appearances, panels and presentations and unique experiences from every corner of Disney, from upcoming feature film and television sneak peeks to what’s new and what’s next from our theme parks around the world.

Disney’s ‘Story’ App Uses Personal Media on iPhone to Generate Narratives Automatically

Disney Story

Disney has announced ‘Story,’ an Apple iPhone/iPad application that can automatically group your personal photos and videos and combine them into a narrative to tell a story.

According to the app’s mission statement (via its description on its official Facebook page), ‘Disney has been telling the stories that you love for generations. Now, we can help you tell yours.’

The app description continues to outline what it does and how it goes about doing so. Using date and GPS data associated with photos and videos stored on the smart phone, Story automatically groups them together in a ready-to-share package, which can then be shared via social media outlets such as Facebook and email, on the official Story.us website, or even embedded on personal blogs.

Additionally, the Story packages can be customized by choosing from a selection of themes, layouts and adding personalized captions to complete the story. The app also supports saving the Story project to Apple’s iCloud for future enjoyment and reference.

‘When we become moms, our phones instantly become the go-to device to capture the spontaneous moments of family life. Before we know it, we have thousands of photos and videos on our phones,’ said Brooke Chaffin, senior vice president, Disney Interactive Family. ‘Until now, there hasn’t been an easy or well-designed way to liberate this media, see the narratives that we create, and tell the stories we want to share.’

Disney Story also has an official Twitter account at @DisneyStory but has yet to offer anything in way of teasing the app.

Disney Interactive has provided us with the gallery of images below demonstrating Story which will soon be available on the Apple AppStore:

Walt Disney Parks has also been developing automated storytelling processes for its guests which will combine guests’ smart phone photos as well as photos from the Disney PhotoPass service.

Disney Files to Trademark Mexican Holiday, Dia de Los Muertos

UPDATE: ACCORDING TO A REPORT BY FRONTERAS, DISNEY HAS ANNOUNCED IT WILL NOT SEEKING ANY LEGAL TITLE TO ‘DIA DE LOS MUERTOS’

Within the past few days, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) has filed several trademark applications in attempt to secure ‘Dia de Los Muertos’ across multiple areas. Dia de Muertos, or ‘Day of the Dead,’ is a holiday most associated with Mexico, where it serves as a national holiday on November 1 and 2 — the days following Halloween — in which families gather together to remember and pray for relatives who have passed on. Interestingly enough, it has also been selected as the topic of an upcoming film from Pixar Animation Studios and directed by Lee Unkrich, tentatively being titled The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dia de los Muertos. The move could indicate that Disney is simply hedging its bets or that Pixar has indeed settled on simply calling its film Dia de Los Muertos, though they have yet to file for films that will precede it, such as Inside Out (2015), though trademarks have been filed for The Good Dinosaur (2014).
