'Fix-It Felix' Hammer by Fix-It Felix Jr.Yesterday we brought you the first viral video for Wreck-It Ralph, a ‘behind the music’-style expose on Wreck-It Ralph titled ‘Behind the Screens.’ Today, Walt Disney Animation Studios has shared its second video, ‘The Fix-It Felix Hammer by Fix-It Felix, Jr.’ which is a take on the classic ‘as seen on tv’ ads. It’s not quite as spectacular in our opinion and we’re not sure why they didn’t jump on the opportunity to call the ‘Mini Fix-It Felix Jr.’ the ‘Fix-It Felix Jr. Junior’ instead, but hey.

Also being released today is the first music video for the film, Owl City’s ‘When Can I See You Again?’ from the original motion picture soundtrack available on Tuesday.

PATENT: Disney Explains How MyMagic+ NextGen Distributes Personalized Experiences

Disney's NextGen Experience State Management SystemStop us if you’ve heard this one: When is a character not a character? When they’re an ‘experience delivery system.’ Get it? Okay, maybe it’s not that funny, or clever, but according to a patent application for a system known as ‘Managing Experience State to Personalize Destination Visits,’ it’s the future truth — and it’s a key element to the MyMagic+/My Disney Experience coming to the Walt Disney World Resort as part of its NextGen experience.

Though it lacks any shocking revelations, the patent application answers one of the most forefront questions since information began pouring in since we began sharing information about the project. Completely apart from FASTPASS+ which is available to families just as the regular FASTPASS system is, this is more in line with the “it’s a small world” real-world avatar; the question being if there are multiple people entitled to a customization, how does Disney decide who gets it?

And so then you have this: the Experience State Management System. And it goes a little something like this.

First, the familiar. Guests will have the reusable and personalized (for an upcharge) MagicBand which uses RFID technology and serves as the key to virtually everything from unlocking hotel room doors (for which Disney is aggressively updating all the locks systematically as you read this) to holding park admission media (though both of these are optional depending on the circumstances) to holding access to FASTPASS+ enabled attractions. Readers, however, will be installed virtually everywhere and it is no gross understatement to suggest that the system is capable of identifying guests virtually anywhere in the parks. We also know that with the readers being able to identify guests as they enter attractions, it also potentially provides supplementary information to a cast member who can now greet a guest by name and/or wish them a happy birthday even if there’s no button, congratulate them on their graduation, or any other possible celebration imaginable, so long as it’s noted in their CRS database.

That’s where the ESMS really comes in because it too will have access to all of this information and not only will it be able to see what entitlements a guest is set to receive, it will obviously be able to record and reference entitlements already distributed. Therefore it can use its guest history to decide who amongst a group of guests will receive the special attention at any single experience, be it within the same family or amongst different groups as well. For example, an attraction could be configured to wish someone a happy birthday when it detects them in a group. But what if there’s two guests celebrating a birthday that day? Maybe one of them was already recognized for it earlier in the day, so the system will decide to honor the other guest. There are several other factors it can consider, or if it determines there is a statistical tie, it can make a random decision to skew the numbers going forward. The system will also use biological information such as age and gender to determine which experiences will be available for a particular guest.

Aside from a talking character (note we do not say face character) being able to greet guests by name upon entering a room, several other potential uses are suggested by the patent application. Special upcharge experiences include birthday acknowledgements, or a pirate experience in which the guest will be acknowledged automatically throughout the parks as being a pirate in any number of ways including visually morphing the guest into looking like a pirate, being dressed like a pirate, etc. The same technique could be applied to make the guest appear to be most anything such as a movie star or athlete.

Although the patent application doesn’t explicitly mention it, the ESMS is also likely to play a role in Achievements, which we also previously spoke about to some extent.

For further reading, you can view the patent application in its entirety here.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ ‘Behind the Screens’ Viral Video, ‘Ralph and Vanellope Make a Deal’ Clip

'Wreck-It Ralph' 'Behind the Screens' DocumentaryAs an anonymous expert once famously put it, ‘video game characters? they’re a lot more complicated than you think.’ And thanks to Walt Disney Studios NZ, we’ve uncovered this shocking expose on the villain Wreck-It Ralph from the classic 1982 arcade video game, ‘Fix-It Felix, Jr.’ According to the documentary, filmed a la VH1′s ‘Behind the Music,’ we learn that life wasn’t always smashing for Ralph and how he broke new ground (as well as other things) trying to change his life for the better.

A new clip titled ‘Ralph and Vanellope Make a Deal’ has also been released in which Ralph goes on a rampage after learning the medal he got in ‘Hero’s Duty’ may be lost forever unless he forges a deal with Vanellope and helps her take first place in a round of ‘Sugar Rush,’ in which the odds are stacked incredibly high against her.

Wreck-It Ralph crashes into theaters on November 2, 2012. Tickets are also still available to see it early in New York City on Sunday, October 28 at the IFC Center via the New York International Children’s Film Festival. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here.

‘The Mistle-Tones’ ABC Family Original Movie Musical to Premiere December 9

ABC Family will premiere The Mistle-Tones, an all new original musical starring Tori Spelling (‘Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood’) and Tia Mowry (‘The Game’) on Sunday, December 9 at 8:00 pm ET/PT. The movie will air as part of the network’s annual ’25 Days of Christmas’ programming event.

In The Mistle-Tones, Holly (Tia Mowry), blessed with an amazing singing voice, is all set to audition for the newly vacated spot in a legendary local Christmas group which was founded by her late mother years ago. Shocked and upset when the slot goes to the barely talented best friend of the group’s leader, Marci (Tori Spelling), Holly sets out to create her own musical group, The Mistle-Tones. After challenging their rivals to a sing-off on Christmas Eve, Holly finds herself on a journey to the real meaning of Christmas — with some new friends and a new love thrown in for good measure. The film also stars Jonathan Patrick Moore, Reginald VelJohnson, Tammy Townsend, Andy Gala, Megan Kathleen Duffy, and Jason Rogel. The Mistle-Tones is executive produced by Maggie Malina (Single Ladies), from a script by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (My Super Psycho Sweet 16), and directed by Paul Hoen (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam).

To make the holiday a little brighter, ABC Family will release an accompanying The Mistle-Tones movie soundtrack on Sunday, November 18. Featuring nine songs from the movie sung by the cast, the soundtrack will be available exclusively on Itunes.

AvatarLand ‘Leaked’ Blueprints Show Attraction Possibilities, Layouts

Rumored leaked blueprints for AvatarLand attractionsIt doesn’t seem to rain much in the rainforest-like environment of Avatar’s Pandora, but we’re pretty sure that if and when it does rain there, it pours. No sooner than a forum thread pop up suggesting James Cameron gave the okay to Disney to proceed with AvatarLand at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort, that purported ‘leaked’ blueprints of some sort involving the layout of the new land’s attractions.

While many tout its authenticity and nobody appears to doubt its validity, at question is whether the leak was intentional or not, which is essentially the same scenario proposed when a far more detailed design of the New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom surfaced months before the formal announcement. Of course then it wasn’t a confirmed project at the time, whereas AvatarLand should come as no shock to anyone at this point (other than it apparently is in the on-again stage of the development process).

The surfaced images show layouts for two attractions, suspiciously identified as ‘E-ticket’ and ‘C-ticket,’ but it’s possible these are just terms to suggest their scope to an outsider such as a contractor or sponsor. The ‘E-ticket,’ which is known in some circles as ‘Soarin’ 2.0,’ is shown as a massive multi-level show building with four independent theaters, believed to house a 3D flight over Pandora, but using a ride vehicle that perhaps moves along a track or at least moves quite a bit more than the Soarin’ handglider vehicle does. Arguably even more interesting is that the layout calls for a 3D glasses cleaning area which is as equally fascinating as it is suspicious. Granted a new 3D attraction calls for more 3D glasses, Walt Disney World already has a ‘central’ location for cleaning glasses from all attractions at Epcot, so it’s worth noting that perhaps the additional load, coupled with Animal Kingdom’s ‘isolation’ is enough to justify an additional cleaning system which would presumably also handle the glasses from ‘It’s Tough To Be A Bug.’ The second attraction appears to be a water-based attraction such as a mild flume ride, that many are likening to ‘Living with the Land.’

Rumored attraction layouts for 'Avatarland'AvatarLand is expected to consume the area of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Camp Minnie-Mickey, home to several character meet and greets as well as the Festival of the Lion King stage show. Although we did previously report that it looked as though the show would close at is present location in early 2013, reportedly for about six months until a permanent location in Africa was available, we also noted recently on Twitter that Walt Disney World is now casting for the show throughout November, suggesting an immediate closure is not nearly as likely to occur. As of this time, those auditions are still listed as happening, although we will advise of any changes.

Many are anticipating that Disney Parks and Resorts will make further announcements and perhaps release concept art during its media extravaganza for New Fantasyland on December 7, but it’s fair to note it would not be unprecedented if the day came and went without so much as a whisper.

REPORT: Tinker Bell and Periwinkle Open Ice Skating Rink at Disneyland Resort (Video/Photos)

img_2896

In honor of the Disney 3D Blu-ray release of Secret of the Wings starring Tinker Bell and the rest of her Pixie Hollow friends, the Disneyland Resort has decided to bring some winter magic of its own to Southern California and open a temporary outdoor skating rink in the heart of its Downtown Disney District.

Last night, a grand opening ceremony was held in which Disneyland Ambassador Rene Toricco played emcee and welcomed everyone to the event. Also speaking at the event were Vice President of Resorts and Downtown Disney Daniel Delcourt and Downtown Disney’s General Manager Janet Knox and filmmakers Peggy Holmes and Michael Wigert — along with a special appearance by Tinker Bell and newly reunited twin Periwinkle, of course.

The Secret of the Wings skating rink is located between the ESPN Zone and AMC 12 movie theater in Anaheim’s Downtown Disney District and will be open every day through January 12, 2013 from 11 am to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday and 10 pm all other days. Plus every half hour, a magical moment happens and guests will hear the film’s anthem, ‘The Great Divide’ as performed by Hollywood Records recording artists The McClain Sisters set to a synchronized light show.

Ice skating sessions are $15 per hour per person with skate rentals (double-blade also available in children’s sizes) available for an additional $3 while toddlers are $12 per hour including rentals. Mandatory helmets and pads are provided at no additional charge.

And there’s more seasonal magic to come. Beginning November 12, a unique holiday village consisting of four chalets will sprout up around the rink featuring seasonal eats and treats. A forest of ‘snow’-covered pine trees, twinkling holiday lights and cheerful garlands will create an enchanting holiday atmosphere where guests can shop, ‘chill out’ and enjoy activities for the whole family, including ‘Santimals’ (an interactive children’s art experience) and fun winter-themed photos.

Below are some additional photos of the Secret of the Wings skating rink.

‘Socio’ Begins Production for ABC Family, Adding Sam Robards to Cast

ABC Family began production today on the drama series pilot “Socio,” starring Avan Jogia (“Victorious), Maddie Hasson (“The Finder”), Kylie Bunbury (“Prom”), Kimberly Quinn (“Terriers”) and Denise Richards (“Two and a Half Men”). Also recently cast in the project is Sam Robards (“Treme,” “Gossip Girl”). Kathy Najimy (“Make it or Break It”) and Grey Damon (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”) have also been cast as guest stars.

Shooting in New York, “Socio” follows Danny (Jogia), who has returned to town after serving five years in custody for murdering his aunt when he was 11. Admitting his guilt, but stubbornly refusing to discuss his motive, Danny returns to a hostile reception and a media firestorm. Ostracized by his peers, Danny reconnects with his former best friends Jo (Hasson) and Lacey (Bunbury) who are still struggling to put the past behind them. But when another student is murdered, suspicion falls on Danny and the question remains, is Danny a serial slayer, a “socio,” or is he a victim with a shocking secret?

Richards portrays Karen, Danny’s mother, who once ruled the town’s social scene, but who now struggles to put on a brave face with her son returning home under a cloud of scandal and shame. Robards plays Kyle, the town sheriff, and Jo’s father, who clashes with his wife Tess (Quinn) over their daughter’s renewed friendship with Danny, convinced Danny is a hardened killer. Najimy will guest as Mrs. Fisk, a charismatic, eccentric psychology teacher and Damon plays Archie, Lacey’s hotheaded boyfriend, who is not pleased by her renewed friendship with Danny.

Gavin Polone (“Gilmore Girls,” “”Zombieland,” “Jane by Design”) is the executive producer of the pilot, which was written by Adam Milch (“Greek”). The pilot is produced by Prodco, Inc.
