LOS ANGELES — Hulu and The Walt Disney Company today announced that Disney, through a subsidiary of ABC Enterprises Inc., has agreed to join NBC Universal, News Corporation and Providence Equity Partners as a joint venture partner and equity owner of Hulu, a leading online aggregator of video content. Upon closing, the agreement will enhance Hulu’s programming line-up through the expanded online distribution of Disney’s most popular current and library primetime series and library feature films. In particular, full-length episodes of hit current and library programs like Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Private Practice, Ugly Betty, Scrubs, Greek, Hope and Faith, Less Than Perfect, Wizards of Waverly Place, Phineas and Ferb, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, General Hospital, The View and The Secret Life of the American Teenager will soon be streamed on Hulu on an ad-supported basis.

Disney ‘Driving a Hard Bargain’ with Hong Kong

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong’s top financial official will meet Walt Disney Co. management in Los Angeles later this week to discuss the stalled expansion of the struggling Hong Kong theme park.

Disney and the Hong Kong government have been embroiled in protracted discussions over financing for a second phase of the world’s smallest Disneyland which could cost a reported HK$3 billion ($387 million).

The first Saturday in May marks the annual Free Comic Book Day in which comic book retailers all across North America (and even the world) offer select comic books for free.

One of the offerings this year will be a special edition of The World of Cars #1 from BOOM! Studios. In addition to Cars, BOOM! works hand in hand with Disney and Pixar to produce comics based on The Incredibles, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., the Muppets and more.

The FCBD edition features an excerpt from the #1 issue which reveals
the origins of America’s favorite racer, Lightning McQueen. You’ll also find never-before-seen sketches, character designs and script pages.

For those near Round Rock, Texas, The World of Cars writer Alan Porter Jr will be making an appearance from 11 am – 1 pm.

First Week’s Sales to Disneynature’s EARTH Means 2.7 Million Trees to be Planted

BURBANK, Calif., April 29   — Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has arranged with The Nature Conservancy to plant 2.7 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, one of the planet’s most endangered rainforests, it was announced by Dick Cook, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios.  In keeping with the Disneynature EARTH’s themes of protecting the planet and its wildlife, Walt Disney Studios volunteered to plant a tree in honor of every moviegoer who saw the film during its first week of release.  The motion picture grossed an impressive $16.1 million at the box office during week one and broke an opening day record as well as an opening weekend record for a nature documentary.  The film also garnered the highest praise from critics and moviegoers alike.

Florida Legislature Passes Time Share ‘Debt-Cancellation’ Bill

The Florida legislature has approved a bill that allows time share operators such as Disney’s Disney Vacation Club (DVC) to sell policies to new buyers that will allow them to walk away should they suffer a loss of income. The bill, championed by Disney, means that hesitant prospective buyers who are afraid to invest in the time share given the current state of the economy will now be offered the potential to drop the time share and any remaining balance due.

The bill will be sent to the Governor’s office who’s expected to sign.

Report: Disney Cruise Line Nixxing Cozumel Visit (At Least for Now)

In response to concerns surrounding the swine flu, cruise lines are making adjustments to their itineraries, with DCL replacing its May 6 docking at Cozumel with Nassau.
