Reuters: Shanghai Disneyland Still Awaiting Approval from Central Government

SHANGHAI/HONG KONG, Nov 2 (Reuters) – The Shanghai government may soon give preliminary details on plans for a new Disney theme park it hopes to develop, as it awaits Beijing’s formal approval for the project, a government source said on Monday.

The official Xinhua news agency cited Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng as telling a media briefing on Sunday that the city would hold a news briefing soon to reveal the latest developments concerning the proposed park.

“This project will surely go forward, but first it must be approved by the central government,” said the government source on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

“They will seek to clarify the situation with this upcoming news conference,” he said.

Rumors have swirled in Chinese media in the last two weeks that Shanghai could soon announce final plans to build a park with Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), possibly to coincide with a planned trip to the city later this month by U.S. President Barack Obama.

Report: Jim Carrey, Bob Zemeckis, et al Bring ‘A Christmas Carol’ Train Tour to New York

Pamela Adlon and Mae Whitman Photo: Alex J. Berliner © Berliner Photography/BEImages Dozens of commuters got a big thrill early Friday morning when they caught a glimpse of actor Jim Carrey being driven through Grand Central Terminal on a pargo courtesy of the FDNY Fire Chief (well, let’s face it, it’s New York, so make it about 3 commuters who even noticed). Singing the theme to The Flintstones as he ‘pedaled’ the slow moving vehicle along, Carrey waved to and graciously greeted his fans as the vehicle’s light flashed and siren blared.

Rewind to just a few minutes before when Walt Disney Studios held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the final stop on the cross-country train tour to promote Disney’s A Christmas Carol. At a press conference held in front of the facade of the large, inflatable theater showing previews of the film, media, execs and guests were treated to a pre-show involving Christmas carolers and vaudevillian-type performers (who were also out entertaining passerbys all weekend long as well).

Kicking off the presentation was new Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, Rich Ross, who first introduced and brought to stage the Chief Marketing Officers of Amtrak and Hewlett-Packard, partners in the train tour promotion. Ross then introduced director Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey who took the stage together, although it was Carrey who ultimately commanded the stage. Also in presence were ImageMover Digital partners and producers of the film, Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke.

Epcot Puts the Mouse Ear in Mouse Gear; Offers Embroidery as of November 1

It’s such an innocent question for the average Walt Disney World vacation planner: Where can I get my Mickey Mouse ears embroidered? But historically, the answer has pointed out an obvious flaw in a nearly-essential element of every Disney fan’s vacation: to date, only the Magic Kingdom (The Chapeau, Sir Mickey’s, County Bounty), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Head to Toe) and Downtown Disney Marketplace (Days of Christmas, Wonderful World of Memories) have offered the option.

Miramax Films to Lose President, New York Roots

It’s now being widely reported that troubled Miramax Films is following suit with Walt Disney Studios in that its President, Daniel Battsek, is set to resign in January. While it’s officially a ‘mutual’ move, some sources claim Battsek is being forced out due to bad performance by the label. This — of course — follows hotly on the heels of Dick Cook leaving the Walt Disney Studios just over a month ago.

In addition, Miramax, whose maximum number of films per year has already been significantly reduced by its parent company, is also being expected to relocate from its home in New York City to Los Angeles.
