‘Monsters University’ NASCAR Experience by Lowe’s at Dover This Weekend

Lowe's NASCAR #48 with 'Monsters University' Paint SchemeIt’s been a monstrous year for NASCAR racer Jimmie Johnson who will be heading to Delaware this weekend after recently helping distribute supplies to victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes. Johnson will be racing to break records at the Sprint Cup’s Dover International Speedway, aka ‘The Monster Mile.’ When it comes to the Sprint Cup, the future NASCAR Hall of Famer has at least tied, if not holds all the records at all seven tracks and this weekend could make Johnson Dover’s winningest driver yet.

Appropriately enough, Johnson’s #48 car will be painted in support of Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, featuring all of the members of the Oozma Kappa (OK) fraternity. The photo featured here, along with other angles, have been posted to the Team Lowe’s Facebook page.

In addition to the vehicle’s appearance during the race, Lowe’s Home Improvement will be hosting a Monsters University Build and Grow display in the Fan Zone where kids will be able to build their own Monsters University race car. The display will be open Friday 9:30 – 4:30, Saturday 8:30 – 3:00 and Sunday 7:30 – 1:00. Jimmie Johnson will also make an appearance on Sunday at 10:15.

‘Million Dollar Arm’ with John Hamm Begins Production

Principal photography has begun on Walt Disney Pictures’ “Million Dollar Arm,” starring Jon Hamm. Directed by Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl,” “Fright Night”), the film is produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, through their Mayhem Pictures, and Joe Roth, under his Roth Films banner, with Palak Patel and Kevin Halloran serving as executive producers. Tom McCarthy (“Win Win,” “The Visitor”) wrote the screenplay. The film also stars Bill Paxton (“Haywire,” “Hatfields & McCoys”), Lake Bell (“What Happens in Vegas,” “It’s Complicated”), Suraj Sharma (“Life of Pi”), Aasif Mandvi (“The Daily Show,” “Margin Call”), Madhur Mittal (“Slumdog Millionaire”), Pitobash (“Three Idiots,” “Shanghai”) and Academy Award®–winner Alan Arkin. A.R. Rahman (“127 Hours,” “Slumdog Millionaire”) is scoring the film. “Million Dollar Arm” will shoot on locations in India, Georgia and Los Angeles.

Based on a true story, Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal), emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Bill Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team.

Not only is the game itself difficult to master, but life in the U.S. with a committed bachelor makes things even more complicated—for all of them. While Rinku and Dinesh learn the finer points of baseball and American culture, they in turn teach JB the true meaning of teamwork and commitment. Ultimately, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all—a family.

The producing team of Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, producers of such notable sports movies as “Secretariat,” “Miracle” and “The Rookie,” joins forces with veteran producer Joe Roth (“Oz The Great and Powerful,” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Alice in Wonderland”) to bring Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” to the screen.

Director Craig Gillespie gained widespread recognition with the critically acclaimed “Lars and the Real Girl,” starring Oscar®-nominated Ryan Gosling. He also directed “Fright Night,” starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette. For television, Gillespie produced and directed the highly acclaimed Showtime series “United States of Tara.” His direction of the pilot episode earned Toni Collette both an Emmy® Award and a Golden Globe® Award.

Golden Globe® winner Jon Hamm is perhaps best-known for his nuanced portrayal of high-powered, philandering advertising executive Don Draper on AMC’s award-winning drama series “Mad Men.” His previous film credits include “Friends with Kids,” which he also produced; “Bridesmaids,” “The Town,” “Sucker Punch,” “Howl,” “Shrek Forever After,” as the voice of “Brogan,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Ira & Abby,” “Kissing Jessica Stein” and “We Were Soldiers.” He recently completed HBO’s “Clear History” with Larry David for director Greg Mottola and the BBC miniseries “A Young Doctor’s Notebook,” opposite Daniel Radcliffe, which he also executive produced.

Alan Arkin, one of the most respected artists of the stage and screen, won an Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2006 hit “Little Miss Sunshine.” For his role, Arkin also won an Independent Spirit Award and a BAFTA Award, and shared in a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® for Outstanding Motion Picture Cast, in addition to receiving an individual SAG Award® nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Arkin most recently earned Oscar®, BAFTA and Golden Globe® Award nominations for his supporting performance in director Ben Affleck’s Oscar®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which also won the BAFTA Award for Best Picture.

Talented, multi-faceted actor Bill Paxton has starred in many audience-pleasing hit films, including “Titanic,” “Apollo 13,” “Aliens” “Twister,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Spy Kids, 2&3” and “Tombstone.” He was recently seen in “The Colony,” “Shanghai Calling” and “Haywire.” On television, Paxton is well known for the series “Big Love,” for which he was Golden Globe® nominated, and recently starred in the award-winning miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” opposite Kevin Costner.

Lake Bell wrote, produced, starred in and directed her most recent film, “In A World…,” which garnered Bell the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance this year. Bell was also seen at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the film “Black Rock,” opening in May 2013, directed by Katie Aselton. Other film credits include, among others, “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” Paramount’s hit comedy “No Strings Attached,” Nancy Meyer’s “It’s Complicated,” “What Happens in Vegas” and “Pride and Glory.”

Suraj Sharma won acclaim for his portrayal of Pi Patel in Ang Lee’s acclaimed movie “Life of Pi.” With no previous experience, Lee cast Sharma for the role of Pi, following an extensive, months-long search throughout India. For his work in “Life of Pi,” Sharma earned a Critics’ Choice nomination for Best Young Actor, an Empire Award nomination for Best Male Newcomer and won the Sierra Youth in Film Award from the Las Vegas Film Critics as well as the MTV Movie Award for Best Scared as Sh**t Performance, among others.

Aasif Mandvi, well known as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” is an accomplished actor who will next be seen in “The Internship,” starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Recent films include “Premium Rush,” “Ruby Sparks” and “Margin Call.”

Madhur Mittal is best known for his performance as Salim in the acclaimed film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won the Academy Award® for Best Picture of 2008 and for which he won the Screen Actors Guild Award® for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Pitobash is a Hindi film actor known for his roles in “I Am Kalam,” “Shor in the City” and “Shanghai.” At the age of 12, Pitobash was honored with the “National Balshree Award” from the president of India in the field of creative performance. He later went on to join Bollywood as an actor.

Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” is slated for a 2014 release.

‘Monsters University’ Clip – ‘ROR Material’

'Monsters University' Character PosterIn this newly released clip, courtesy of Walt Disney Studios New Zealand, Sulley finds himself being wooed by Monsters University fraternity Roar Omega Roar (ROR) president Johnny Worthington. We also learn that Sulley may have a bit of a legacy at the school himself.

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer — and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University. But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, ‘Sulley’ (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University is directed by Dan Scanlon, produced by Kori Rae and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman. The film also stars the vocal talents of Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Dave Foley, Sean P. Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Charlie Day, Nathan Fillion, Bobby Moynihan, Julia Sweeney, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, John Krasinski, Bonnie Hunt, Beth Behrs and John Ratzenberger and opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters.

Staggs Hints Disney Parks RFID MagicBand Could Integrate with ‘Disney Infinity’

Earlier today, at the All Things Digital conference, Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs took the stage to speak on the MyMagic+ experience being developed for Disney Parks, following a brief introduction to the system by Edna Mode of Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles (video of appearance available here). Staggs spoke about the experience, beginning with online reservations for activities and dining — even suggesting guests will be able to order their entire meal online so service will start immediately upon arrival at the restaurant — and other perks guests can expect to receive with the system’s MagicBand, given specific permissions. One such example is that Staggs confirmed (as we have long suspected and promoted) characters at meet and greets will know guests’ names automatically. To that end, Staggs also talked about the talking Mickey Mouse technology that is under development by Walt Disney Imagineering and has promised he too will come along for the experience. In addition, Staggs also talked about how attractions such as “it’s a small world” will be modified to include acknowledging celebrations of a guest during the actual ride through. He also talked about how the band (which uses a combination of BlueTooth and RFID technology) will be customizable through items he compared to Crocs’ jibbitz.

When asked whether there was potential for the MagicBand outside Walt Disney World (Staggs indicated that all resorts worldwide will be receiving some variation on the MyMagic+ experience), Staggs responded by making a strong reference to the upcoming ‘Disney Infinity,’ which we know to make use of RFID technology through a reader:

‘As an example, I think that seeing something like that tie into other Disney experiences both makes sense and is something that we’re thinking about. And one of the things that we know is that — and Bob Iger said this two years ago — people have no interest in consuming the Disney org chart, they want to have a relationship with Disney overall and so it’s  important for us to be integrated in that way. So one of the things we’ve got — and I won’t make a specific announcement — but [Disney] Infinity is coming out, which is the new game with the playables, so that’s an opportunity to think about how [the MagicBand] might enable something else in the game, so that’s something we’ve got in mind and I’ll let John Pleasants announce it.’

So although he stopped short of acknowledging that the MagicBand will integrate with ‘Disney Infinity’ on some level, it’s a pretty strong suggestion in our book.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Disney Interactive declined to comment.

‘The Lone Ranger’ Premiere at Disney California Adventure to Benefit American Indian College Fund

'The Lone Ranger' Teaser PosterWalt Disney Studios Chairman, Alan Horn, announced today that ticket sales from the highly anticipated World Premiere of Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger will benefit the American Indian College Fund. The event will take place on Saturday, June 22, at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California. A giant red carpet down the Park’s iconic Hollywood Boulevard will be lined with thousands of park guests cheering for the film’s stars, filmmakers and the many Hollywood celebrities in attendance. The Lone Ranger’s horse Silver will make an appearance and an actual train engine built for the film will be on display.

“We’ve had a terrific collaboration with the Native American community throughout the production of Disney’s The Lone Ranger,”said Alan Horn, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “With the world premiere of this exciting film at hand, we are pleased to commemorate the occasion by supporting the American Indian College Fund.”

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Academy Award® winner Gore Verbinski, “The Lone Ranger” is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Johnny Depp stars as a newly imagined Tonto and Armie Hammer plays the masked lawman himself—the Lone Ranger.

Tickets for the premiere event have been donated by Disney to the American Indian College Fund, which will offer them for sale to the public; tickets will be available for purchase at https://community.collegefund.org/the-lone-ranger, starting today. Because Disney is also underwriting the entire cost of the premiere, 100% of the revenues received by the American Indian College Fund for the tickets will be used for scholarships and other support for Native American students. Tickets are priced at $1000.

Fund President, Cheryl Crazy Bull, stated: “The Fund is pleased to be the beneficiary of this event because our scholarships are an investment in a healthier, more prosperous future for tribal students and their families. We are poised to serve over 20,000 American Indian and Alaska Native students attending the tribal colleges across this country. Currently our scholarships serve less than 21% of those students so we appreciate any opportunity to bring resources into our scholarship program.”

Disney California Adventure Park will be hosting the premiere and sponsors will be offering opportunities for the guests in conjunction with the event. Commenting on the premiere event, Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said, “All of us at Disney Parks are thrilled to host the world premiere of ‘The Lone Ranger’ at Disney California Adventure. Disney brings unforgettable stories and characters to life in our movies and in our parks and resorts, so there’s no better place than Disney California Adventure to start this trailblazing film on its journey.”

  • Time Warner Cable, a title sponsor of the world premiere of Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger, will stream the event LIVE from Disney California Adventure Park.
  • Visa Signature, a premiere sponsor, will have a fan pen on the red carpet for the first 50 Visa Signature cardholders who show their card.
  • The Utah Office of Tourism and Film, a premiere sponsor, will provide an opportunity for guests of the park to enter to win a trip to Utah and premiere guests will enjoy a photo opportunity provided by the sponsor. Many of the movie’s memorable scenes were filmed in the Monument Valley area of southern Utah.
  • Christie Digital, a global visual technologies company with expertise in film projection since 1929, is providing all the projection for “The Lone Ranger” premiere.
  • A one-of-a-kind Lone Ranger Ninja motorcycle from Kawasaki, a sponsor of the premiere, will be displayed at the event and will be available for the stars in attendance to autograph. The bike will be auctioned off at a later date, with all proceeds going to the American Indian College Fund.
  • Subway is providing sandwiches for the premiere guests.

Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ The Lone Ranger opens in theaters July 3, 2013.
