What happens when a half a dozen cars taking part in an illegal street race find themselves rolling through an exploding power plant at full speed? Available to own on Xbox, PS3 and Windows platforms on May 18, Split/Second is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com.
That’s the conclusion of a team of researchers from Save the Elephants, Oxford University and Disney’s Animal Kingdom who have discovered a new alarm call made by elephants in response to the threat of bees. Working with herds of elephants in Kenya, scientists theorize that this unique rumble may warn other herd members of the bees’ presence, prompting pachyderm retreats even when no are bees present.
“The purpose behind these studies is to find a novel way of keeping elephants from raiding the crops of local communities, and thereby reducing “human-elephant conflict,” according to Joseph Soltis, Ph.D., research scientist at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. “As human populations expand, they move into elephant territory and elephants and people end up sharing the same space. One of the consequences is that elephants start raiding crops, which can end up harming both people and elephants.”
Using an array of microphones hidden in the bush, scientists first recorded the vocal reaction of the elephants to bees and then replayed these elephant rumblings without bees present. When elephants heard this recording through wireless speakers, they behaved the same as they did when bees were present; they shook their heads, threw dust in the air, and ran away from the area. These very low-frequency “rumble” vocalizations are apparently different from other rumbles, leading researchers to believe that that elephants may use their voices to communicate threats to each other.
It’s On! Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato will rock the summer in “Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam,” a full out rock ‘n roll musical that celebrates music, dance and the freedom of summer and reminds viewers to ‘enjoy the journey.’ Part of the blockbuster Disney Channel Original Movie franchise that introduced a generation to contemporary movie musicals, “Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam” premieres FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel. It will be ushered in by the biggest summer-long experience ever presented by the channel, the industry leaders in providing world-class content for kids, tweens and families.
This summer of fun opens on a high-pitched Camp Rock reunion. All the Camp Rockers have returned, eager to tune up and rock out. Nobody’s more excited than Mitchie, who anticipates more than a summer of music. Fresh from a world tour, the rock band Connect 3 are hanging all summer – Shane to pursue last summer’s crush on Mitchie, his band mates as moral support. Guitar legend Brown Cesario, Camp Rock’s owner, is ready to rock ‘n roll.
But all is not copasetic at this rocking teen paradise. Across the lake glistens the new Camp Star: a high-tech, big-money music camp funded by Brown’s former band mate-with-a-grudge, Axel Turner. Down-to-earth Camp Rock may have passion, talent and commitment, but Camp Star boasts resources, infrastructure and money – enough money to poach Camp Rock’s counselors and put Camp Rock out of business.
But Axel isn’t counting on a natural born leader named Mitchie, who vows to save her beloved camp and her friends’ summer. Clipboard in hand, she organizes the older Camp Rockers into counselors and keeps the camp running. Then Mitchie steps it up again… by challenging the egocentric Camp Star to a Final Jam – an end-of-summer performance duel, may the best camp win.

Despite a weakened economy and virtually all other parks in North America seeing a decline in attendance in 2009, most of Disney’s 11 theme parks worldwide saw improvement in performance according to the 2009 annual TEA/AECOM theme park attendance report issued today. All totaled, approximately 119.1 million guests visited Disney Parks worldwide last year.
Ranking the top 25 parks worldwide, the top 8 spots went to Disney Parks, with number one being — with no surprise — the Magic Kingdom with an annual attendance of about 17.2 million, a relatively minor increase over 2008. Ten of Disney’s theme parks ranked in the top 25, the only absentee being the Walt Disney Studios at the Disneyland Paris Resort.
