‘Wonders of Life’ Pavilion at Epcot Tagged for ‘Selective Demolition’

Yesterday, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a notice of commencement with the Orange County Comptroller’s office to indicate intentions for ‘selective demolition’ to take place at Epcot’s ‘Wonders of Life’ pavilion. The notice comes just a just a few short weeks prior to the theme park’s 30th anniversary.

The pavilion, which initially opened in 1989 under sponsorship of MetLife, who would eventually drop sponsorship in 2001. The pavilion, which celebrated its last hurrah during the holiday season in 2006, has slowly transformed itself into the theme park’s ‘Festival Center,’ with access to ‘Body Wars’ being sealed off and the theaters for ‘Cranium Command’ and ‘The Making of Me’ being repurposed to hold festival-related docs and presentations. The future for the original theming of the pavilion, with its iconic double-helix DNA structure outside, grew ever more bleak, with reports often stating that should the pavilion ever return, it would not be in the familiar form it once was.

This prediction seemingly continues to be the case with the latest filing, which has Tampa-based Kimmins Contracting Group performing the work. Just what the work entails is anyone’s guess at this point as the textbook ‘definition’ of selective demolition is pretty vague and can involve virtually anything short of razing the entire building itself, but usually does involve modifying the physical form of the building in some capacity all the while maintaining the structure’s integrity.

There’s absolutely no reason to believe it based simply on this filing, but could Walt Disney World be preparing to make an announcement regarding the pavilion’s future just in time for Epcot’s 30th on October 1?

REPORT: ‘Festival of the Lion King’ at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Won’t See 2013

The latest species on the endangered list to be highlighted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort will be the Tumble Monkey, if reports are to be believed. A reliable insider has advised us that the gymnasts performing at the popular ‘Festival of the Lion King’ show located at Camp Minnie-Mickey have been put on six month notice (as of last month) and — to date — there have been no changes or amendments made to said job loss notification.

If this is indeed the case, it basically sets FOTLK for an early 2013 closing at the latest, lasting perhaps no longer than February (we were provided only with a rough timeline, not a specific date). Even so, it would be possible for the company to simply end the show and pay off the remainder of the contract should it determine to be more cost effective to do so.

The logical explanation provided for the end of the popular show’s reign (which has been a staple at the park since it opened in 1998) is that Camp Minnie-Mickey will be leveled in favor of ‘Avatarland’ which is expected to break ground in 2013. Most recently, reports have come in that ‘Avatarland’ is anywhere from stalled-to-canceled, but these reports mostly cite an IGN report which mentions only that the project is delayed, but even that arguably incorrectly culls its info from its own cited source, which effectively bases the rumor on nothing more than a combination of no concept art being publicly shared and (what amounts to) fanfic.

While The Walt Disney Company is being conspicuously mum on its plans for ‘Avatarland,’ it has seemingly been moving forward with the project, conducting balloon surveys and, of course, telling its current cast members their services will no longer be required soon.

UPDATE: ‘Frankenweenie Unleashed!’ on Vinyl Exclusively from Amazon; Features Bonus Tracks

Amazon.com has recently added an exclusive vinyl edition
of ‘Frankenweenie Unleashed!’ from Walt Disney Records. At this time, a track list for the Amazon exclusive hasn’t been posted, so it’s unknown whether it will simply be the same as the CD/digital edition or will contain remixes of the songs inspired by the film. Even missing the cover art, all the entry states is that it will be a double album and released on October 30, more than a month after the CD release and nearly a month after the film’s introduction to theaters.

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween 2012 Guide Map Now Available

Walt Disney World has updated its official Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween event page to include a link to the official guide map / times guide for 2012. There really are no surprises this year, save for the ‘Not So Scary Street Jam!’ pre-parade on Main Street, USA which is mercifully left off of the map.

What is interesting however is the sponsors being listed which indicates a change of the candy offerings at the party’s various trick or treat stations. Listed are: Chiquita (sorry, Dole), whose potential offerings include Super Crunchy Fruit Chips; Kellogg’s, who offers ‘Jake and the Neverland Pirates’ and ‘Avengers’ branded fruit snacks; Werther’s Original, which offers a host of caramel-based products as evidenced in their Karamell-Küche shop located in the Germany pavilion in Epcot; and Peeps, whose parent company, Just Born, offers up Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales, Peanut Chews and Teenee Beanee jelly beans, in addition to the marshmallow treats.

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween parties begin at the Magic Kingdom on September 11 and run many nights through November 2. While park admission is not required per se, the event does require a separately purchased ticket. For more information, visit the official MNSSH event page.

PHOTOS: Disney Baby Store Opening Celebration

On Saturday, Disney Baby will open its first ever specialty store, located at the Americana at Brand in Glendale, California. To mark the momentous occasion, a private event was held yesterday in which celebrities and other VIPs were invited to experience an newly expanded line of toys, clothing and other merchandise aimed at babies and their moms.

The event was emceed by Alison Sweeney, host of NBC’s ‘Biggest Loser’ and ‘Days of Our Lives’ cast member, and her children, joined by Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger too. Other celebs attending included Ali & Susie Hartman, Ali Landry, Angel Parker, Cristina Milian, Essence Atkins, Jennifer Aspen, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Marika Tsircou, Samantha Harris, Talon Smith and Bill Horn and Scout Masterson (a.k.a. The Guncles).

Also in attendance were 20 expectant military moms as a result of a partnership between Disney Consumer Products and Operation Shower, a non-profit organization that supports military families by hosting baby showers to ease the stress of deployment. Disney teamed with Operation Shower to honor the new moms and their families by treating them to a magical baby shower and complimentary shopping experience in the new store.

Outside of the store, Disney Baby held a ‘Magical Moments Festival’ which featured various tents which included engaging activities, spotlighting products that every baby needs, from feeding to bathing to play time. Guests were also treated to a special private performance of Blue Sky Riders featuring Kenny Loggins, Georgia Middleman and Gary Burr.

The Disney Baby Store at the Americana at Brand will have its grand opening celebration tomorrow, September 8th at 10 am PST with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Throughout the day, guests will have the opportunity to meet and greet with Winnie the Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood. The first 500 guests to visit the store will also receive a special gift.

Disney Baby merchandise is available at most major retailers including DisneyStore.com, which is offering free shipping with any Disney Baby purchase through September 9, 2012. A second Disney Baby location is expected to open at the Disney Store Times Square later this year.
