Test Track 2.0 MarqueeEarlier today, the official Disney Parks blog held a webchat with Walt Disney Imagineer Melissa Jeselnick, who is one of the lead Imagineers in transitioning Epcot’s Test Track to the Test Track 2.0 phase.

Essentially, the story of the attraction is switching from testing to design, according to Jeselnick. The interior queue is being completely changed to align itself with the new focus. ‘We’ll have actual items, sketches, cars, models from GM that have never been seen before by anyone outside the Chevrolet family,’ she added.

The queue will consist of the Test Track Design Studios. It’s there that guests will design their own custom concept vehicle which ‘follows’ them into the vehicle, now known as a sim car. Although the vehicles are all physically the same, the custom design configuration itself will be scored in categories such as Capability, Efficiency, Responsiveness and Speed. Possible customizations for the vehicle design include body shape, color and tire selection.

Test Track 2.0 Concept ArtFor the concept art seen here, Jeselnick explains that the attraction will consist of several scenes. By the time the guest reaches the point shown here, they have already experienced at’s just before our final virtual scene. By that point of the ride, you’ve experienced the Capability, Efficiency, Responsiveness and Power virtual scenes and are being set up for Speed.

In the Capability scene, the guest’s vehicle is tested for rough road and weather conditions; the Efficiency scene tests the car design’s environmental footprint; the Responsiveness scene phase tests maneuverability; and Speed is tested.

Jeselnick also noted that the custom designed vehicle continues to follow the guests even through the post-show area (where Chevrolet will display cars currently available in the pavilion showroom as well as offer concept car photo opportunities). There will be some element allowing guests to compare their custom vehicle design scores with other guests throughout the day. Jeselnick also offered the possibility of guests being able to interact with their designs beyond the attraction, though she stopped short of mentioning what they may be. It would not be unprecedented for there to be some online component, for example, or possibly even a special PhotoPass opportunity where guests can virtually join their creation.

While the attraction will enjoy a new sponsor (Chevrolet as opposed to General Motors), a new queue and ride experience, a brand new soundtrack, a new marquee (shown above) and more, some elements will remain the same. The track itself is not being altered and the attraction will continue to offer both FASTPASS and Single Rider options. While the standby queue will offer full customization opportunities, the FASTPASS and Single Rider queues will allow guests to choose from a selection of pre-configured vehicles.

DSW Cinderella-Inspired Limited Edition Collection to Launch in October

'The Glass Slipper' Limited Edition Collection by DSWThey may not actually be glass, but an exciting new line of evening and wedding fashion footwear — inspired by the 1950 Disney animated classic film, Cinderella — will soon be available from leading branded footwear and accessories retailer DSW. ‘The Glass Slipper Collection’ hits DSW stores and dsw.com on October 1, 2012 in celebration of the release of Cinderella Diamond Edition, available on Blu-ray™ for the first time at the stroke of midnight on October 2.

The collaboration between DSW and Disney began with the idea of creating a line of shoes that successfully blends the classic elegance of Cinderella with today’s footwear trends. The result? A gorgeous collection of five timeless styles in must-have colors any fashion-savvy shoe lover would want in her closet.

‘The inspiration for the line came from the vision of Disney artist Mary Blair’s original art for the film,’ says Debbie Ferrée, Vice Chairman, EVP of Merchandising for DSW. ‘We took a close look at the film’s aesthetic details — the rich textures and fabric, the beautiful blue in Cinderella’s dress, even the French rococo-inspired scenery. Every whimsical touch featured in the footwear collection came right out of the film.’

‘The Glass Slipper Collection captures the beauty and sophistication of Cinderella, tapping into the childhood affinity women have for this beloved character while creating footwear that is relatable to their lives as adults,’ said Robert Oberschelp, Director, Disney Consumer Products.

Shoes in the limited-edition collection bear an embossed carriage logo and a signature blue jewel on the sole, making them not only a great fashion statement, but a stylish collector’s item as well. Ranging in price from $59.95 to $89.95, The Glass Slipper Collection is the perfect fit for generations of women who want to look fabulous and feel glamorous on their big night.

‘The Fosters’ from Jennifer Lopez and ‘Socio’ Pilots Ordered by ABC Family

ABC Family, the millennial-skewing network, has greenlit two new drama pilots, “The Fosters” (working title), from executive producer Jennifer Lopez, and “Socio,” from executive producer Gavin Polone. Summer to date, ABC Family’s current crop of original series have made ABC Family cable TV’s #1 network in Prime in Women 18-34, and the #2 cable TV network in Females 12-34 and Female Teens.

“ABC Family continues to find and develop original programming that adds new dimension and depth to the storytelling we offer,” said Kate Juergens, executive vice president, Original Programming and Development, ABC Family. “Both these shows are headed by wonderful executive producers who know the millennial space well and know how to connect with audiences.”

From executive producer Jennifer Lopez (“American Idol,” “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” “The Back-Up Plan”) and created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige, who will also serve as writers and executive producers, “The Fosters” is a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. Simon Fields and Greg Gugliotta will also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by Nuyorican Productions, Inc., and Prodco, Inc.

“Socio” is a one-hour drama centered on a charismatic 16-year-old alleged sociopath who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood, and who becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is murdered. The series will be executive-produced by Gavin Polone (“Gilmore Girls,” “Zombieland,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “My Boys,” “Jane by Design). Adam Milch (Greek), who wrote the pilot, will also serve as co-executive producer. The series is produced by Prodco, Inc.

Disney’s Plans to Introduce Automatic Age and Gender Detection to Video Games

In an age where Kinect and PlayStation Eye/Move are encouraging less traditional interaction with video game consoles and cameras are a mainstay in virtual everything, let alone most mobile devices, one man at Disney Interactive sees video game systems moving even further from the path of the familiar and letting the console games make their own decisions based on — you guessed it — physical appearance.

Both ‘System and method for number of players determined using facial recognition’ (US Patent Application 20120214585) and ‘Gender and age based gameplay through face perception’ (US Patent Application 20120214584) list Phillippe Paquet as the sole inventor and offer to leverage existing technology in interesting ways.

The patent application titles pretty much describe the concepts and, to be honest, conceptual is mostly what these appear to be at this time. Though the technology is there, as Disney’s own Imagineers have demonstrated the capability of identifying and tracking individuals in a crowd, the implementations and practical applications seem to be lacking.

In short, Paquet envisions video game consoles (or virtually any device, including vehicle simulators) as being able to identify the number of participants, distinguishing active ones from spectators, as well as the approximate ages and genders of the game. Furthermore, he anticipates gameplay will change automatically, catering to what the system learns of its user. While a fascinating prospect, this would encourage locking players into stereotypical gender roles which could be a problem — assuming the gender of the player is 100% accurate. Even the example of using age to determine difficulty is questionable since skillsets — particularly when it comes to video games — are very much subjective to the individual rather than the number of growth rings inside their bodies.

Interestingly enough, it wasn’t too long ago that Face.com (now owned by Facebook) had developed significant facial recognition software which was even able to attempt to determine an individual’s age. Thus it would appear that Disney’s main concern is simply to cover the uncharted area should it seem like it could become a reality. As a final bullet point of interest, the patent applications were filed about a month before Face.com revealed its age-identification technology to the public.
