‘Disney Movies Anywhere’ to Replace ‘Disney Studio All Access’

Disney Movies AnywhereThough it has yet to show any sign of life beyond advertisements which began a year ago at the Disney D23 Expo and subsequent home video releases, it appears the Disney Studio All Access program is still alive and kicking behind-the-scenes only now it will be known as ‘Disney Movies Anywhere.’

Not surprisingly, Disney (NYSE:DIS) has been tight-lipped on the program, which allows customers to buy a Disney title once and then play it back across all devices from anywhere. There has been nary a mention since Robert Iger stated Disney is maintaining a ‘wait and see’ attitude in response to the launch of its main competition, UltraViolet, which has been falling way short of wowing its customers thus far.

Still there have been movements towards making the program a reality. Internally the company is developing a website for the product (as seen here), though most of the content is missing at this time. The ‘Disney Movies Anywhere’ name change is further evidenced by this letter sent earlier this month by the Motion Picture Association of America to Victoria A. Espinel, the United States Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator (IPEC), in regards to film piracy.

Every step of the way, Stitch Kingdom has been on top of reporting the ‘Disney Movies Anywhere’ initiative in all of its incarnations. Recently we shared a sneak peek at the accompanying mobile phone app, from when the program was still called Disney Studio All Access.

ABC Family Renews ‘Melissa & Joey,’ ‘Baby Daddy,’ ‘Switched at Birth;’ More ‘Bunheads’ on Order

ABC Family, the Millennial-skewing network, continues its forward momentum as it greenlights additional seasons of its hit series. The network has ordered a third season of “Melissa & Joey,” a second season for both “Baby Daddy” and “Switched at Birth,” and has given a back-order pick-up to “Bunheads,” Michael Riley, President of ABC Family, has announced. The original dramas will premiere in Winter, with the hit comedies returning in Spring 2013.

After launching a successful Wednesday night comedy block with “Melissa & Joey” and “Baby Daddy,” cable TV’s #1 telecasts in their half-hours across the network’s core Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Millennial demos, ABC Family has ordered a third season of “Melissa & Joey” and a second season of “Baby Daddy.” Already established as a destination for hit dramas, the network will also produce a second season of the award-winning hit series “Switched at Birth,” and ordered additional episodes of the critically-acclaimed series “Bunheads.” These pick-ups join the previously announced “Beverly Hills Nannies” reunion special that will air on September 4.

“Two years ago we embarked on a bold strategy to grow the breadth and scope of original programming and create a Wednesday night summer comedy destination,” said Riley. “The new series have resonated with our viewers, and the combination of drama, comedy and reality brings great depth to our lineup. Our stable of strong series continues to grow, and I’m thrilled with the strength of our schedule.”

Kate Juergens, executive vice president, Original Series Programming and Development, ABC Family, continued: “I’m so pleased to add more ‘Baby Daddy’ and ‘Bunheads’ to our lineup, and to have already put a ‘Beverly Hills Nannies’ reunion special into production. So many returning originals spotlight how well our programming resonates with our audience. It also furthers our promise to continue to deliver programming that is engaging, optimistic and relatable.”

“Baby Daddy,” which launched as the network’s #1 comedy series in ABC Family history, is pacing as the #1 new cable comedy this summer in Women 18-34 and Females 12-34, and launch to date is the network’s #1 comedy ever and cable TV’s #2 comedy in Prime in the core demos. Providing a solid launch pad for “Baby Daddy,” “Melissa & Joey” is delivering its best season on record, ranking as cable TV’s #1 series in the half-hour across key measure 18-34, 18-49 and 12-34 demos. Newcomer “Bunheads” is a key player on Monday nights, standing as cable TV’s #2 series on Mondays at 9 o’clock in Women 18-34 and Females 12-34.

“Baby Daddy”
“Baby Daddy” follows Ben (Bilodeau), a young man in his early 20s living the life of a bachelor as a bartender in New York City with his buddy, Tucker (Mowry), and his brother, Danny (Theler), a professional hockey player. Their lives are turned upside down when they come home one day to find a baby girl left on the doorstep by an ex-girlfriend of Ben’s. After much deliberation, Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his friends and his protective and sometimes over-bearing mother, Bonnie (Peterman), and his close female friend, Riley (Kane), who has had a secret crush on him since childhood. Riley is hopeful that Ben will finally take notice, but she doesn’t realize that Ben’s brother, Danny, is harboring a secret crush on her.

The series stars Jean-Luc Bilodeau (“Kyle XY”), Derek Theler (“90210″), Tahj Mowry (“The Game”), with Melissa Peterman (“Reba”) and Chelsea Kane (“Dancing with the Stars,” “Jonas LA”). “Baby Daddy” is created and executive-produced by Dan Berendsen (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” and “Hannah Montana: The Movie”). “Baby Daddy” is a multi-camera comedy that shoots in front of a live studio audience in Los Angeles.

“Bunheads”
Executive-produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino (“Gilmore Girls”) and headlined by Tony Award(r)-winning actor Sutton Foster, “Bunheads” is the tale of a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a man, moves to his sleepy coastal town, and takes an uneasy role at her new mother-in-law’s dance school.

Michelle Simms (Foster) had a promising career as a classically trained professional dancer, but was drawn to the lights of Las Vegas. Now, with a dead-end job as a 30-something showgirl, she’s found the excitement of Sin City has lost its appeal, and her persistent suitor, Hubbell Flowers, is gaining it. With promises of a cushy life in his coastal town of Paradise, CA, Hubbell convinces Michelle to marry him and move away. Once in Paradise, Michelle discovers that Hubbell forgot to mention that he lives with his mother, the strong-headed, imperious Fanny Flowers, who is not pleased that Hubbell has run off and married a stranger.

A former dancer herself, Fanny runs the local dance studio, which Michelle comes upon and ends up bonding with some of Fanny’s dance students — sweet “Boo,” who would give anything to be a “bunhead” but struggles against her body type; rebellious Sasha, who possesses the classic ballet dancer’s body and talent but — distracted by family issues at home — doesn’t seem to have her heart in dancing; shapely Ginny, who is not yet comfortable in her own skin; and fun-loving Melanie, who is ready for whatever life throws at her. Michelle’s budding relationship with these girls helps her adapt to small town living and her uneasy role as a new daughter-in-law.

The series stars Sutton Foster (“Flight of the Concords”) as Michelle Simms, Kaitlyn Jenkins as Bettina “Boo” Jordan, Julia Goldani Telles as Sasha Torres, Bailey Buntain as Ginny Thompson and Emma Dumont as Melanie Segal, with guest star Kelly Bishop (“Gilmore Girls”) as Fanny Flowers.

“Melissa & Joey”
In the hit ABC Family original comedy series “Melissa & Joey,” Mel (Melissa Joan Hart) is the former wild child of a political family who is now a successful councilwoman in Toledo. Thanks to a financial scheme gone horribly wrong, Mel’s sister ends up in prison and sends her brother-in-law on the run from the law, leaving Mel as the legal guardian for her teenaged niece, Lennox, and nephew Ryder. Spread too thin to manage by herself, Melissa gets help in the unlikely form of Joe (Joey Lawrence) who, desperate for a job, agrees to move in and becomes the family’s “manny.” Together Mel, Joe, Lennox and Ryder form an unlikely family as they navigate the comedic twists and turns of life.

“Melissa & Joey” is a half-hour multi-cam comedy executive-produced by Bob Young & David Kendall, Paula Hart, Melissa Joan Hart, Joey Lawrence and John Ziffren. Melissa Joan Hart (“Sabrina, the Teenage Witch”), Joey Lawrence (“Blossom”), Taylor Spreitler (“Days of Our Lives”) and Nick Robinson star.

“Switched at Birth”
In “Switched at Birth,” two families are forever altered when they discover their daughters were switched at birth. Life hasn’t been easy for hard-working, single mom Regina Vasquez, but along with her mother, Adriana, Regina has provided her 16-year-old daughter, Daphne — a typical teenager who just happens to be deaf — with a loving and secure home. Although she attends a school for the deaf and hard-of-hearing with best friend Emmett, Daphne’s hearing loss does not prevent her from leading a full life. In sharp contrast to the Vasquezes, Kathryn, a stay-at-home mom, and John Kennish, a retired professional athlete, lead a seemingly perfect life with their two children, Bay and Toby. But when the Kennishes learn the hospital made a grievous error and that Bay is not their biological child, their entire world is turned upside down. Regina, Kathryn and John must learn to co-exist as parents and to blend two families into one for the sake of their daughters, despite overwhelming socio-economic, ethnic and cultural differences.

“Switched at Birth” recently received a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming and an Imagen Award for Best Primetime Program, and has been honored with AFTRA’s (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) American Scene Crystal Award(r), the Producers Guild of America George Sunga Award and a Gracie Award.

“Switched at Birth” is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss (“Blue Crush”), Paul Stupin (“Make It or Break It”), Becky Hartman Edwards (“Parenthood”) and John Ziffren (“Melissa & Joey,” “Make It or Break It”). The series also stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez; Vanessa Marano (“Gilmore Girls”) as Bay Kennish; Constance Marie (“George Lopez”) as Regina Vasquez; D.W. Moffett (“Friday Night Lights”) as John Kennish; Lea Thompson (“Back to the Future,” “Caroline in the City”) as Kathryn Kennish; Lucas Grabeel (“High School Musical”) as Toby Kennish; and Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe, along with guest stars Gilles Marini (“Dancing with the Stars”) and Marlee Matlin (“The West Wing”).

“Switched at Birth” will return with all new episodes on Monday, September 3 at 8:00 p.m. In advance of the premiere, Hyperion will release a Switched at Birth book (available at online retailers on
August 28), divulging the contents of a memoir authored by the character Kathryn Kennish (played by Lea Thompson) in the series.

‘Brave’ Targets November 13 for 3D Blu-Ray Release Date

'Brave' on Disney 3D Blu-RayAlthough there have been widely speculated rumors that Disney/Pixar’s Brave would be coming to 3D Blu-ray/DVD on November 6 — with no official announcement to date — the first date we have managed to find from an official source is actually one week later, November 13, 2012.

The news comes to us from DisneyStore.com which has begun listing the 2-disc ‘Collector’s Edition‘ version of the release for pre-order. While that particular release is limited to just a 2D version of the film on Blu-ray as well as DVD, Amazon.com is listing multiple versions, including the 5-disc ‘Ultimate Collector’s Edition‘ which features the 3D Blu-ray version of the film along with the 2D version, DVD and digital copy.

Unfortunately there has been no details regarding bonus features released as of yet, but we will update as soon as that information becomes available to us.

Walt Disney Family Museum to Explore Stop-Motion Animation; Exhibit Opens September 27

Coraline armature and puppet Coraline (2009) Steel and rubber Courtesy Merrick CheneyThe Walt Disney Family Museum has announced its newest special exhibition, ‘Between Frames: The Magic Behind Stop Motion Animation,’ on view from September 27, 2012 to April 28, 2013 in the Museum’s Theater Gallery. Curated by WDFM Registrar and Curatorial Assistant Anel Muller, the exhibition explores the evolution of stop motion animation in the United States — especially in special effects, television, and film — while examining some of the key milestones and innovators including Willis O’ Brien (King Kong), Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas), Art Clokey (‘Gumby’), Ray Harryhausen (It Came From Beneath the Sea), Henry Selick (Coraline and James and the Giant Peach), Phil Tippett (Star Wars and Jurassic Park) and more.

‘Between Frames’ tells the story of a 100-year-old art form that has been used in special effects, television and film and launched Walt Disney’s career in animation. The exhibition includes behind-the-scenes photographs from films such as The Lost World (1925) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963), replicas of the original armatures from King Kong (1933) and Mighty Joe Young (1949), along with a Digital Input Device (DID) created just for Jurassic Park (1993). Puppets from the ‘Robot Chicken’ (2005) opening sequence and a puppet mold from Gumby, as well as original armatures from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Coraline (2009) and original storyboards from James and the Giant Peach (1996) will also be on view.

Visitors will be invited to manipulate and touch armatures at a special interactive station. A film loop of great moments in stop motion animation will also be running in the gallery.

All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) or Imperial Walker replica Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back (1980) Resin, plastic on metal Courtesy Phil TippettSpecial Effects
The origins of stop motion animation are rooted in special effects. Discovered accidentally, stop motion was the key for filmmakers to open the door to fantastical realities. Stop motion animation enabled films like The Lost World (1925), King Kong (1933), It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) and the original Star Wars (1977) trilogy to transport the audience into worlds where anything was possible and the unexpected was certain.

Feature Films
Before The Nightmare Before Christmas, stop motion animated features were a huge gamble for movie studios. Hansel and Gretel: An Opera Fantasy, released in 1949 and distributed by RKO, was the first American stop motion feature film, and had only modest success at the box office. After Hansel and Gretel, the lackluster success of stop motion features continued in the United States for many years. The success of The Nightmare Before Christmas sparked a renaissance in stop motion features with productions, in the last 20 years, such as James and the Giant Peach (1996) and Coraline as well as the creation of stop motion studios like Laika and Cinderbiter.

Short Films
Shorts were and still are the laboratories for most stop motion animators to test out new tools and techniques to improve the art form. Not only has this format launched the careers of many filmmakers like Tim Burton but it is has been the only format of stop motion animation to be awarded an Academy Award® for Closed Mondays (1974).

Television
Commercials and television series have both made use of stop motion animation. Commercials from cigarettes to band-aids and even memorable characters like the California Raisins (1986) were all brought to life with stop motion. Stop motion animated television series in the United States are limited in comparison to Europe and Asia; it remains a great platform for the art form with characters like Gumby, which appeared in over 234 episodes over four decades beginning in the 1950s. While more recently, ‘Robot Chicken’ (2005) has revived interest in stop motion animated series while sparking the imaginations of a new television generation.

‘Between Frames: The Magic Behind Stop Motion Animation’ was organized by The Walt Disney Family Museum.

Special Programs
In conjunction with ;Between Frames: The Magic Behind Stop Motion Animation,’ the Museum is hosting a suite of special programs, screenings, and events:

Puppet Masters: Stop Motion Animation in Visual Effects Filmmaking Panel – Saturday, October 20 at 3 pm – General: $12 adult, $9 youth | Members: $10 adult; $7 youth

Visual effects legend Ray Harryhausen inspired a generation of visual effects artists with his pioneering work in stop motion animation. Four of Harryhausen’s “kids,”—Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Tom St. Amand, and Jon Berg—all masters of this technique, will gather to discuss stop motion animation and its use in creating characters and creatures for movies. Join moderator Hal Hickel in a discussion of their work with stop motion, its history as a visual effects technique, and the transition into computer-generated animation.

Muren, Tippett, St. Amand, and Berg have created visual effects using stop motion in some of the most famous films of the last three decades. The holographic chess pieces in the original Star Wars, the Hoth snow battle in The Empire Strikes Back, the dragon Vermithrax in Dragonslayer, the mine car chase in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the flying rocket man in Rocketeer, and the deadly ED 209 robot in Robocop are just a few examples of their amazing craft.

‘Frankenweenie’ IMAX Policy Trailer: It Came From the Audience!

(L-R) Mr. FRANKENSTEIN, VICTOR, SPARKY and Mrs. FRANKENSTEIN. ©2012 Disney Enterprises. All Rights Reserved.

Walt Disney Studios has just shared its IMAX policy trailer featuring Frankenweenie which comes alive in theaters beginning October 5, 2012. Inspired by the old black and white B film trailers of yore, the etiquette trailer also introduces a bit of new footage from the film, including a very cryptic message from Weird Girl’s ‘pet,’ Mr. Whiskers.

A feature-length stop-motion remake of the original short film by Burton, Frankenweenie is a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

The film stars: Charlie Tahan as Victor; Winona Ryder as Elsa; Martin Short as Edward Frankenstein, Mr. Bergemeister, Nassor, Victor’s Dad and Bob; Catherine O’Hara as Victor’s Mom, Gym Teacher and Weird Girl; Martin Landau as Mr. Rzykruski; Robert Capron as Bob; Atticus Schaffer as Edgar; James Hiroyuki Liao as Toshiaki; Conchata Ferrell as Bob’s Mom; and Tom Kenny as Fire Chief, Soldier and Townsfolk.

The exciting tale takes place in the heart of Paris where a kind and eccentric millionairess, wills her entire estate to ‘Duchess,’ a high society cat, and her three kittens. When the bumbling butler Edgar tries to pull off the ultimate catnap caper in order to secure the fortune for himself, it’s up to alley cat Thomas O’Malley and his band of swingin’ jazz cats to save the day.

One of the brand new bonus features including in the Blu-ray is titled ‘The Lost Open.’ Through the use of animatics, an alternate, never-before-scene opening for the film unfolds before the viewers, including a demo of the deleted songs ‘How Much You Mean to Me / Court Me Slowly,’ recorded by Richard and Robert Sherman themselves.

Stitch Kingdom: Can you tell us a little about the alternate opening bonus feature?

Richard Sherman: In all pictures that are created, there are all these times that you attempt to do something and somebody else decides we don’t need it, you know, that type of thing. But there was a very elaborate opening — which I always loved — but I had forgotten about it, it was so long ago — but it had been storyboarded. In other words, the action had been laid out onto a drawing and everything and a song was written and dialog was written for it and it was never filmed. It was the opening of The Aristocats which told a little more about the background why they were these pampered kittens. And this lady, their Madame Bonfamille, and how much she loved them, it’s all in this. Also it gave the opportunity to explain why Edgar the Butler was so eager to kidnap those pussycats, because he wanted all the money for himself and he makes a big play for the housemaid because she was gonna receive half the money in the will and he decided he’d marry her and get all the money for himself (laughs) — a real crazy guy. And so you got a little more insight into those characters and it’s all done in fun. It’s done with a wonderful sequence, which I got a chance to tell the story of. So through the storyboarding, I talk about it and then you hear a demo that Bob and I did 40-something years ago of this duet that was talking place between Elvira the maid and Edgar the butler. So this all material that nobody in the world has seen for 40 years. People that buy the DVD are going to see something very, very special.

SK: Does this mean you got a chance to revisit the Disney archives?

RS: Oh sure, they have wonderful drawings. It’s wonderful they do have these things and now with the magic of Blu-ray and the re-issues of these wonderful films, it’s wonderful that they can show a lot more about what goes into making a film because for every song [you] hear, there are sometimes three, four, maybe five songs had been written for that sequence and not used and many times they’re brilliant songs.

SK: Speaking of unused songs, I understand you wrote another song titled ‘Le Jazz Hot.’ Can you tell us more about it?

RS: I love ‘Le Jazz Hot’ for a lot of reasons. One because it was a song written for the sequence ‘Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat,’ that was a decision made by the people. (laughs) It’s my own personal opinion that ‘Le Jazz Hot’ would have become a standard, unfortunately they didn’t use it. I’d be lying if I said well, let the best man win, they decided to use ‘Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat.’ I think there was a song written by [unintelligible], a very brilliant writer, another song that was not used in the picture. So they had two or three songs for that sequence and they decided to use that song — and it’s a good song, I’m not going to knock it, it works beautifully. But I like ‘Le Jazz Hot’ for a lot of reasons, one because it has French words in it — it’s more in keeping with the whole spirit of The Aristocats. Just like the opening song with Chevalier, it’s as French as it could possibly be and we felt ‘Le Jazz Hot’ is a French word — it means hot jazz — we were right on the button. And now after 40 years, we’re going to get our chance in the sun. I’m very happy.

SK: Because Walt Disney Records is preparing to release it on ‘The Lost Chords: The Aristocats‘ on the same day as the Blu-ray…

RS: Oh yes, very good song too. My God. I was there when they re-recorded it. I’m very excited about it. That’s wonderful. So you’ll hear material — and I’m sure there are other songs other writers wrote that are excellent songs that didn’t work for what they wanted. There’s a lot of reasons why these things are cut, I mean it’s not a question of quality because people that write songs for films are all pretty damn good people, right? So what matters is what they can use and what they don’t use.

SK: Are you encouraged by the release of these lost songs?

RS: It’s wonderful for the writers because [Disney's] breathing new life into material that [the songwriters] poured themselves into that nobody has ever heard except they and their piano bench (laughs) but now they hear it all done — and I know it’s kind of wonderful to hear them hugely produced and [Disney's] done a good job of it.

SK: If there is one standout from your experience working on The Aristocats, what would it be?

RS: The Aristocats marked something very, very special for me because the great Maurice Chevalier came out of retirement to sing that title song and that was a very big thrill for us, it really was. And the fact that he did that was very special and the whole world got the last performance of this great, great entertainer.

SK: With the 50th Anniversary of Mary Poppins approaching and it possibly being the pinnacle of your career — if you can even define a pinnacle –

RS: My brother Bob and I had been writing songs together and apart — but mostly together — for fourteen years before Mary Poppins had come out. And all of a sudden, people referred to us as the ‘overnight sensation’ (laughs). We had been writing and writing. We wrote pop songs, we wrote rock and roll songs, we wrong songs for Parent Trap, we wrote songs for Sword in the Stone, we wrote songs for Summer Magic, we wrote so many songs for so many projects and pictures, ‘It’s a Small World After All.’ So when Mary Poppins came out, all of a sudden we were ‘overnight sensations,’ so basically, yes, it was a pinnacle. It was a turning point, it put us on the map.

SK: What I was getting at was I was wondering if you were aware of anything being done for it, if you could maybe give us a tease…

RS: I’ll tease you with one thing. There is a very, very, very major movie that’s going to be going in front of the camera in the coming month.

And with that allusion to the Saving Mr. Banks movie, our interview sadly drew to an end, hopefully to be continued as we draw closer to the next item on Mr. Sherman’s very full list of upcoming projects.
