clonedemo 160x96 VIDEO: Face Cloning for Audio Animatronics Demo by Disney Research

After presenting its technique for cloning the human face in an effort to produce more realistic audio animatronics at SIGGRAPH, Disney Research Zurich has released this video which takes a closer look at the process, which we began discussing on here last month.

The video starts off by giving an overview of the patent application which we previously described. Essentially the project aims to correct issues with traditional audio animatronics in which the synthetic skin is stretched as actuators contort it to form various expressions. By using an array of high definition cameras to produce marker-less motion capture, the system can accurately determine how a specific synthetic skin material, such as silicone, should be cut in terms of varying thicknesses and attached to the animatronic skeleton so that the desired expressions are replicated precisely, down to the wrinkle level. The video then goes on to give a full demonstration of the process, from scanning the subject, to producing the mold, to comparing the original actor with his audio animatronic counterpart.

Swampy the Gator from ‘Where’s My Water’ Headed to Disney Parks

Photo1 160x78 Swampy the Gator from Wheres My Water Headed to Disney Parks
After topping the iTunes app charts for months, what is Swampy the Gator from the Disney Mobile franchise, ‘Where’s My Water?’ going to do next? He’s going to Walt Disney World, of course! Maybe sneaking in a bath or two first though.

Disney Parks has quietly launched SWAMPYATDISNEY.COM, a mobile mini-site that shares the above image along with the following teaser:

For the first time Swampy is leaving his subterranean home for a vacation in the human world. There were a lot of water parks to choose from, but Swampy has settled on two of the crown jewels: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach at the vacation capital of the human world, Walt Disney World. Humans haven’t made it very easy for alligators to travel freely, but Swampy is finding that getting there is at least part of the fun!

Rumors of a meet and greet character version of Swampy have been swirling about for months, but this is a pretty good suggestion from an official source that he is coming. Sources have indeed confirmed to us that costuming has created a character costume for Swampy and that whispers of what amounts to a ‘publicity stunt’ have been traded amongst the inner circles at the Walt Disney World Resort, so expect to hear more about this event soon. Blizzard Beach has offered meet and greet opportunities in the past with its mascot, Ice Gator, whom Swampy is sure to get along with swimmingly.

The site also makes mention of the Typhoon Lagoon-inspired hidden level in Where’s My Water? FREE. The hidden level is called ‘Waterslide’ and can be accessed through the Collection screen in the game by scrolling down and tapping on the life preserver (thanks to @WillD79). Another hidden level, ‘Ups and Downs,’ can be found on the same screen by scrolling upwards and clicking on the arrow. The same level can be found in the paid version of Where’s My Water? on the Collection screen, while clicking on the sun after scrolling down will reveal ‘Good Morning’ as featured on ABC’s  ‘Good Morning America.’

VIDEO: Disney Research’s ‘Botanicus Interacticus’ Makes Plantlife Interactive

sliding gesture 160x90 VIDEO: Disney Researchs Botanicus Interacticus Makes Plantlife InteractiveWhile Disney Research Zurich prepares to present its face cloning for audio animatronic use at SIGGRAPH today, Disney Research Pittsburgh is demonstrating its own new technology which allows converting any isolated plant into an interactive experience, allowing computers to detect where a human touches the plant.

Dubbed ‘Botanicus Interacticus: Interactive Plant Technology,’ the technology, which is based on the Touche technology introduced earlier this year, allows a single electrical wire to be inserted in soil. The wire transmits a frequency sweep between .1 and 3 Mhz which allows the area in which the plant is touched to be estimated without causing any damage to the plant itself.

Gestures such as sliding fingers, touching specific leaves, user proximity or amount of touch can be detected and mapped to perform computer-controlled functions. Disney Research hopes the technology (which works equally well with artificial plants) can be used to encourage activity between people and their environments as well as each other by ‘enhancing living, working and social spaces to make them responsive, intelligent and adaptive.’

‘Botanicus Interacticus,’ which is being demonstrated at SIGGRAPH at an exhibit which uses the Pepper’s Ghost illusion to project a computer-generated response to samples including bamboo, orchid, cactus and snake plant with each plant presented it is unique interactive and visual character.

Disney to Release ‘New’ Music from ‘The Aristocats,’ ‘The Rescuers’

lost1 160x139 Disney to Release New Music from The Aristocats, The RescuersWe first told reported plans for Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s plans to release the animated classics The Aristocats andThe Rescuers for the first time on Blu-ray back in May. Today we have learned in conjunction with the films’ release on August 21, Walt Disney Music will also be releasing rarely heard music from the soundtrack of the films, which never made it to the final production in a series called ‘The Lost Chords.’

Arguably the more interesting of the two is the album for The Aristocats Disney to Release New Music from The Aristocats, The Rescuers which features two titles: ‘How Much You Mean to Me / Court Me Slowly’ and ‘Le Jazz Hot.’ While the former is included as a bonus feature for the Blu-ray, the latter seems to be a more intriguing mystery. A cursory search, for example, returns only two mentions of it in context, one of which is in this interview in which Richard Sherman speaks of it fondly. The downloadable album (which also contains a PDF booklet) includes both tracks performed by Richard Sherman as well as seemingly new recordings by Disney Character Voice performer Corey Burton and lead of Vintage Trouble, Ty Taylor.

The album for The Rescuers Disney to Release New Music from The Aristocats, The Rescuers contains four songs with recordings of ‘Doin’ What I Really Do Best,’ ‘I Never Had It So Good’ and ‘Peopleitis,’ each recorded separately by Floyd Huddleston and Louis Prima, as well as ‘The Need to be  Loved’ as recorded by both Paul Francis Webster and Jennifer Paz.

Although the recordings won’t be available to own until August 21, they are all able to be sampled at this time.

New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom to Open December 6; Previews Begin November 19

Magic Kingdom guests blink back in amazement at the scene: not one, but two colorful Dumbos spinning through the sky above Storybook Circus.

To the delight of fans of the beloved Dumbo, the Flying Elephant attraction, a second Dumbo flies alongside. The playful pachyderm is joined in Storybook Circus by the Barnstormer Coaster re-themed to the Great Goofini, the Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station water play area and the Fantasyland Train Station — all part of the multiyear, largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history.

There’s more to come as the expansion of the New Fantasyland – nearly doubling in size — continues at Walt Disney World Resort. In fact, so many more attractions are coming on line later this year that Dec. 6, 2012 has been set as the Grand Opening of Fantasyland. Previews begin Nov. 19.

Slated to make their debuts:

Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, a major attraction where guests will travel with Ariel and her friends through their exciting adventures above and below the waves – all against a musical backdrop of songs from the film. The new attraction combines the enduring appeal of a classic Disney “dark ride” with wonderful technological innovations to offer guests a personal journey into the scenes of the film. Adventurers will feel as if they are descending below the ocean’s surface. Once “under the sea,” guests will find themselves immersed in the story of “The Little Mermaid,” sharing Ariel’s adventure through a magical cast of characters and a captivating musical score that will entice everyone to sing along. The fun continues at “Ariel’s Grotto,” a meet-and-greet with the mermaid heroine herself.

The castle of the Beast stands majestically upon a hill across an old stone bridge from Ariel’s new home. The Be Our Guest Restaurant will feature a lavish dining experience in the elegant ballroom, gallery, and mysterious “West Wing” of the castle. With seating for 550, this magnificent facility will offer “great food fast” service by day and full table service dining in the evening. Nearby in Belle’s Village, guests will find the rousing Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts.
Just outside the village is Belle’s cottage and Enchanted Tales with Belle. The adventure begins in Maurice’s workshop, where a magical mirror is the doorway to a captivating new kind of storytelling experience: guests will be transported to the Beast’s library to meet Belle and Lumiere, and share in a lively, interactive re-telling of the “tale as old as time.”

“Fantasyland is a place where a very special kind of memory is made: where children just old enough to understand the moment come in contact with princesses and heroes and meet their most beloved friends,” said Meg Crofton, president, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, United States and France.

“We are excited about sharing our treasured stories in new ways and giving guests the opportunity to interact with their favorite characters like never before.”

Beyond 2012, there’s more in store for Fantasyland guests:

Located in the Castle Courtyard in the center of Fantasyland, Princess Fairytale Hall will be the new home for visiting royalty in the Magic Kingdom. The castle-like entrance will feature walls of stone and stained glass windows, opening up into a large gallery – an airy space with a high ceiling, where portraits of the Disney princesses adorn the walls. When it’s time for their audience with a princess, guests will proceed to elegantly finished rooms to meet Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel (2013).

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will take guests on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its-kind ride system with a train of vehicles that swing back and forth, responding to every twist and turn of the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs (2014).
