Alan Menken performs 'Proud of Your Boy' at Disney D23 Destination DLast night, Alan Menken held an intimate performance as part of the ‘Destination D’ event at the Disneyland Resort, held by Disney D23, the official fan club of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS). After wowing the attending crowd with music from decades of his Tony, Grammy and Oscar-winning career (he holds the record for having the most Oscars (living)), he closed the show with ‘Proud of Your Boy,’ a song that was intended for the original 1992 film, but was cut due to story changes.

It was when introducing the song that Menken mentioned the musical is currently being tweaked for a Broadway run, according to reports from attendees. A new staged version of the musical was produced by Disney Theatrical and premiered at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle last year, but no aspirations for Broadway were anywhere to be found — at best, a national tour; at worst, licensing to regional theater. Howard Ashman’s sister, Sarah, wrote about the musical on her tribute blog, Part Of Your World, and some of the changes that were incorporated into it that deviate it from the beloved animated film. In addition to ‘Proud of Your Boy,’ three other songs that were initially cut have been reinstated along: Call Me A Princess; High Adventure; and Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim, which brings along the three non-Aladdin characters with it.

After a brief run at The Muny in July, the musical is now in production at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in Utah through mid-October and has managed to incorporate the use of 3D glasses for the Cave of Wonders and Genie’s ‘Friend Like Me’ song, courtesy of former Walt Disney Imagineer Geoff Puckett, according to the fan-based Aladdin Musical blog.

Still, prior to last night, there wasn’t so much as an inkling that it would soon find itself on the Great White Way. Actually, an inkling may in fact have been all there was, as a thread on Broadway World points to a cryptic message at the end of a recent video update from 5th Avenue Theatre (UPDATE – The upcoming musical in question was ‘A Christmas Story,’ so video removed):

UPDATE #1 – 8/17/12 – Since there is so much interest in the article, we are now adding an audio recording from that evening’s performance in which Menken mentions the shift to Broadway. Had most anyone else said it, we would chalk it up to confusing Broadway as a generic theatrical production, but Menken probably knows the difference by now. So without further ado, here is Menken performing ‘Somebody’s Got Your Back’ and ‘Proud of Your Boy’ from Disney’s Aladdin:

As a post script, we have also received reports that employees at Tuacahn are freely talking about working closely with Disney Theatrical to bring the musical directly to Broadway.

‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ ‘Frankenweenie’ New Hi-Res Stills

Wreck-It Ralph and a few fellow arcade-game bad guys head back to their games via Game Central Station following a BadAnon support group meeting where Ralph learns that being a Bad Guy in his game doesn’t make him a bad guy. ©2012 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios have provided us new hi-res stills from their upcoming films Wreck-It Ralph (November 2, 2012) and Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie (October 5, 2012).

In the new still from Wreck-It Ralph, which has been added to the beginning of our gallery of stills below, Ralph and his fellow baddies are returning from a BadAnon meeting where the mantra ‘I am bad and that’s good, I will never be good and that’s not bad’ reigns supreme but does not seem to ring true for the would-be hero who’s seen here clutching the cherries he took after entering the Pac-Man game via Game Central Station.

In addition to the were-rat image we shared late last week, we also have a couple of new stills from Frankenweenie, both of which feature Sparky, one of them alongside Victor. Both images have been added to the beginning of our gallery below:

‘Frankenweenie’ New Still – Beware the Were-Rat!

(L-R) PERSEPHONE, EDGAR 'E' GORE, ELSA VAN HELSING and Were-Rat ©2012 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Walt Disney Studios has provided us with a brand new hi-res still from its upcoming film by Tim Burton, Frankenweenie. The still features Persephone, Edward ‘E’ Gore, Elsa Van Helsing and the Were-Rat (insert spooky audio cue here). We first told you about the were-rat when we discovered him and his merchandise at the ‘Art of Frankenweenie‘ exhibition at San Diego Comic-Con.The exhibition will soon be on its way to Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort from September 14, 2012 through November 5, where it will be accompanied by a special sneak peek at the film.

The new still has been added to the beginning of our gallery of stills from the film below:

A feature-length stop-motion remake of the original short film by Burton, Frankenweenie is a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

The film stars: Charlie Tahan as Victor; Winona Ryder as Elsa; Martin Short as Edward Frankenstein, Mr. Bergemeister, Nassor, Victor’s Dad and Bob; Catherine O’Hara as Victor’s Mom, Gym Teacher and Weird Girl; Martin Landau as Mr. Rzykruski; Robert Capron as Bob; Atticus Schaffer as Edgar; James Hiroyuki Liao as Toshiaki; Conchata Ferrell as Bob’s Mom; and Tom Kenny as Fire Chief, Soldier and Townsfolk.

Frankenweenie opens nationwide October 5, 2012.

‘Finding Nemo Escape to the Big Blue Special Edition’ Coming for Nintendo 3DS

Finding Nemo Escape to the Big Blue Special Edition

Right before Finding Nemo 3D from Disney/Pixar lands in theaters on September 14, 2012, Disney Interactive will release ‘Finding Nemo: Escape to the Big Blue Special Edition‘ for the Nintendo 3DS, according to a listing by Amazon.com.

In addition to 3D clips from the film, the game itself will essentially feature more than thirty mini-games in which the player can compete for sea tokens to be redeemed for items for their interactive reef. An additional baggy mode will allow players to re-create the dentist escape scene from the film and unlock additional characters from the tank gang to be able to use in the mini-games in addition to Marlin, Nemo and Dory.

The game is also being re-released for the Nintendo DS (minus any 3D features)

‘Frankenweenie Unleashed!’ to Feature Music from Plain White T’s, Robert Smith, Neon Trees and More

Frankenweenie Unleashed!

Walt Disney Records has released the full track list for its upcoming release titled ‘Frankenweenie Unleashed!,’ a compilation of music inspired by the Tim Burton film from popular alternative recording artists.

He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new ‘leash on life’ can be monstrous.

The album will be available to own on September 25, 2012 while the film will be released in theaters on October 5. A more ‘traditional’ original motion picture soundtrack featuring music by composer Danny Elfman will also be released.

The complete track list is as follows:

  • Strange Love – Karen O
  • Electric Heart (Stay Forever) – Neon Trees
  • Polar Tropic (You Don’t Understand Me) – Mark Foster
  • Almost There – Passion Pit
  • Pet Sematary – Plain White T’s
  • With My Hands – Kimbra
  • Everybody’s Got A Secret – Awolnation
  • Immortal – Kerli
  • My Mechanical Friend – Grace Potter featuring the Flaming Lips
  • Lost Cause – Imagine Dragons
  • Underground – Grouplove
  • Building A Monster – Skylar Grey
  • Witchcraft – Robert Smith
  • Praise Be Holland – Wynona Ryder

UPDATE #1: 8/10/12 – As it turns out, ‘Underground’ by Grouplove was actually meant to be a B-side that was never released, so the group ended up releasing it for free to its fans. One enterprising fan uploaded it to YouTube as can be heard in the video below:

Note that it’s possible that the band may re-record the track specifically for the album as Grace Potter did for her song for Tangled.

VIDEO: Face Cloning for Audio Animatronics Demo by Disney Research

Face Cloning for Audio Animatronics by Disney Research

After presenting its technique for cloning the human face in an effort to produce more realistic audio animatronics at SIGGRAPH, Disney Research Zurich has released this video which takes a closer look at the process, which we began discussing on here last month.

The video starts off by giving an overview of the patent application which we previously described. Essentially the project aims to correct issues with traditional audio animatronics in which the synthetic skin is stretched as actuators contort it to form various expressions. By using an array of high definition cameras to produce marker-less motion capture, the system can accurately determine how a specific synthetic skin material, such as silicone, should be cut in terms of varying thicknesses and attached to the animatronic skeleton so that the desired expressions are replicated precisely, down to the wrinkle level. The video then goes on to give a full demonstration of the process, from scanning the subject, to producing the mold, to comparing the original actor with his audio animatronic counterpart.

Swampy the Gator from ‘Where’s My Water’ Headed to Disney Parks

Swampy at Disney Parks
After topping the iTunes app charts for months, what is Swampy the Gator from the Disney Mobile franchise, ‘Where’s My Water?’ going to do next? He’s going to Walt Disney World, of course! Maybe sneaking in a bath or two first though.

Disney Parks has quietly launched SWAMPYATDISNEY.COM, a mobile mini-site that shares the above image along with the following teaser:

For the first time Swampy is leaving his subterranean home for a vacation in the human world. There were a lot of water parks to choose from, but Swampy has settled on two of the crown jewels: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach at the vacation capital of the human world, Walt Disney World. Humans haven’t made it very easy for alligators to travel freely, but Swampy is finding that getting there is at least part of the fun!

Rumors of a meet and greet character version of Swampy have been swirling about for months, but this is a pretty good suggestion from an official source that he is coming. Sources have indeed confirmed to us that costuming has created a character costume for Swampy and that whispers of what amounts to a ‘publicity stunt’ have been traded amongst the inner circles at the Walt Disney World Resort, so expect to hear more about this event soon. Blizzard Beach has offered meet and greet opportunities in the past with its mascot, Ice Gator, whom Swampy is sure to get along with swimmingly.

The site also makes mention of the Typhoon Lagoon-inspired hidden level in Where’s My Water? FREE. The hidden level is called ‘Waterslide’ and can be accessed through the Collection screen in the game by scrolling down and tapping on the life preserver (thanks to @WillD79). Another hidden level, ‘Ups and Downs,’ can be found on the same screen by scrolling upwards and clicking on the arrow. The same level can be found in the paid version of Where’s My Water? on the Collection screen, while clicking on the sun after scrolling down will reveal ‘Good Morning’ as featured on ABC’s  ‘Good Morning America.’

VIDEO: Disney Research’s ‘Botanicus Interacticus’ Makes Plantlife Interactive

Botanicus Interacticus from Disney ResearchWhile Disney Research Zurich prepares to present its face cloning for audio animatronic use at SIGGRAPH today, Disney Research Pittsburgh is demonstrating its own new technology which allows converting any isolated plant into an interactive experience, allowing computers to detect where a human touches the plant.

Dubbed ‘Botanicus Interacticus: Interactive Plant Technology,’ the technology, which is based on the Touche technology introduced earlier this year, allows a single electrical wire to be inserted in soil. The wire transmits a frequency sweep between .1 and 3 Mhz which allows the area in which the plant is touched to be estimated without causing any damage to the plant itself.

Gestures such as sliding fingers, touching specific leaves, user proximity or amount of touch can be detected and mapped to perform computer-controlled functions. Disney Research hopes the technology (which works equally well with artificial plants) can be used to encourage activity between people and their environments as well as each other by ‘enhancing living, working and social spaces to make them responsive, intelligent and adaptive.’

‘Botanicus Interacticus,’ which is being demonstrated at SIGGRAPH at an exhibit which uses the Pepper’s Ghost illusion to project a computer-generated response to samples including bamboo, orchid, cactus and snake plant with each plant presented it is unique interactive and visual character.
