Disney Water Parks Offer New Entertainment, Dining and Extra Magic Hours in Summer 2012

Summer 2012 brings a splash of fun for the whole family at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach water parks, with new entertainment and dining options at Typhoon Lagoon and Extra Magic Hours at both parks.

New Entertainment
The relaxing atmosphere at Typhoon Lagoon is enhanced with new sounds of summer. For the first time, Calypso band “Tropicals” brings Caribbean steel drums to Typhoon Lagoon from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Friday through Sunday until July 15. The band can be found near the Crush ‘n’ Gusher water coaster pool area. Returning this year every day through September 8, characters Lilo and Stitch can be found just outside of the High N’ Dry sundries shop at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon; at Disney’s Blizzard Beach, guests can chill out with Goofy, who can be found roaming the water park.

New Dining Option
Typhoon Lagoon guests looking for summer fare beyond the normal park offerings may visit Tropicalamity. The new temporary food and beverage tent, located near Crush ‘n’ Gusher water coaster pool area, features a variety of eats, including chicken jerk pita wrap, citrus chicken salad, hot meatball sub and cold Italian sub.

Summer Extra Magic Hours
Guests staying at Walt Disney World resort hotels can take advantage of Extra Magic Hours on select days and times at both Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach through late August.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon – Currently, Wednesday mornings before the park opens, from 8-9 a.m. through August 22. Starting July 7, guests can take advantage of additional extra magic hours Saturday mornings before the park opens, from 8-9 a.m. through August 18.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach – Currently, Thursday mornings before the park opens, from 8-9 a.m. through August 23. Starting July 3, guests can take advantage of additional extra magic hours Tuesday mornings before the park opens, from 8-9 a.m. through August 14.

Radio Disney Names N.B.T. Finalists; Showcase This Weekend at Walt Disney World

The popular musical talent competition for young artists, Radio Disney’s “N.B.T.” (Next BIG Thing), hits a higher octave in its fifth season beginning in the fall. This season’s winner will perform on the hit Disney Channel series “Austin & Ally,” have a single released by Disney Music Group and be the opening act for popular Radio Disney recording artists at the “N.B.T.” finale concert this year in Los Angeles. Radio Disney and Disney Channel audiences will determine the winner when they are invited to look, listen and vote for their favorite artist.

Radio Disney will introduce its season five “N.B.T.” artists at the first-ever three-night showcase at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort from Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24 at 8:00 pm ET. The showcase, hosted by Radio Disney on-air personality and “N.B.T.” host Jake Whetter, will feature all of the season five artists, giving fans a taste of their varied musical styles. Season four “N.B.T.” winner Shealeigh and runner-up Zack Montana will also take the stage for headline performances.

“This season’s showcase event at Walt Disney World Resort and the integration with Disney Channel’s ‘Austin & Ally’ exemplify our efforts to continuously expand ‘N.B.T.,’ providing our audience with an enhanced experience each season and delivering increased exposure for our young artists,” said Phil Guerini, Vice President and General Manager, Radio Disney.

Kicking off July 1 at Chicago’s Taste of Joliet, “N.B.T. On Tour” powered by Invisalign Teen is a multi-market concert tour featuring season five “N.B.T.” artists, “N.B.T.” alumni and popular Radio Disney artists. “Austin & Ally” stars Ross Lynch and Laura Marano are expected to make guest appearances throughout the tour, which will stop in more than 15 cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Sacramento and Seattle. Invisalign Teen will also sponsor the multiplatform competition on Radio Disney and Disney Channel.

“We are thrilled to come back for a second year as title sponsor of Radio Disney’s ‘NBT On Tour,’ and look forward to engaging with fans and their parents about Invisalign Teen,” said Thomas M. “Holding auditions in various cities this year helped us select a talented lineup of artists that represent a mix of musical styles from rockabilly to R&B and acoustic pop,” said Kelly Edwards, Executive Director, Music and Programming, Radio Disney. She added, “In addition to hearing new music from five great artists, fans will also fall in love with their charismatic and dynamic personalities.”

This year’s artists, ages 12-17, are:

Chloe and Halle Bailey 13-year-old and 12-year-old (respectively) sister R&B singers and actresses from Atlanta, Georgia
Damian Otchere 16-year-old pop and R&B singer, dancer and actor originally from Brooklyn, New York, currently residing in East Orange, New Jersey
Elle Winter 13-year-old pop singer, songwriter and actress from New York, New York
Jack Skuller 16-year-old rockabilly singer and songwriter from Hoboken, New Jersey
Katherine Hughes 17-year-old acoustic pop singer and actress from New York, New York

“N.B.T.,” a daily multiplatform competition that launched the careers of Hollywood Records recording artist and Disney Channel star Coco Jones (“Let It Shine”), as well as Kicking Daisies, Shealeigh and Allstar Weekend, puts the spotlight on aspiring young recording artists and provides them with the chance to showcase their music across national broadcast and online platforms. Over the course of 10 weeks, Radio Disney and Disney Channel audiences will be invited to look, listen and vote for their favorite artist via multiple entry points including RadioDisney.com and by texting “NBT” to DISNEY (347639) (standard messaging rates may apply).

‘Monsters University’ Concept Art in Ultra High Resolution

Walt Disney Studios (NYSE:DIS) and Pixar Animation Studios have provided us with concept art for their upcoming film Monsters University and monsters they are. The original images were so big, we had to downsample them to a miniscule ~10 MP for your enjoyment.

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University stars the vocal talents of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn and is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”) and produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”). The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Disney D23 ‘Brave’ Movie and Art Night at El Capitan Theatre on July 1

Disney D23, the official fan club for The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) and Disney Fine Art have announced that they will be holding a special screening of Disney/Pixar’s latest on screen adventure, Brave, at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood in conjunction with a special meet and greet opportunity with artists Victoria Ying of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Daniel Arriaga of Pixar Animation Studios and Jim Salvati who will be presenting new art inspired by the film.

The ‘Meet the Artist’ reception will take place at 6:00 pm PT while the film will begin at 7. Tickets are $26 per person (active D23 members may purchase up to 4 tickets) and includes early V.I.P. admission for the reception, reserved seating for the film, popcorn, soft drink and a voucher good for 20% off merchandise at Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store located next door.

Disney Online to Launch Groupon-esque Site Geared Towards Families

Disney Online (NYSE:DIS) has recently begun teasing ‘Disney Family Deals,’ a website that promises its online guests that they will find ‘fantastic offers on Disney toys, vacations, clothing, collectibles, music, videos and more!’ In addition to the online deals, the site also promises to offer localized activities, products and services.

The underlying framework of Disney Family Deals appears to be that of Plum District, a site ‘for moms, by moms,’ which offers time-limited localized deals, or essentially exactly what Disney Family Deals promises minus the Disney-specific opportunities, which are more likely than not to be various offers aggregated from across the Walt Disney Company.

A website has been set up at DisneyFamilyDeals.com which allows interested parties to sign up to be notified when the site goes live. In addition, a Facebook page and Twitter account have been created to promote the service.

‘Disney D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives’ Musical Tour Available July 3

In conjunction with the launch of the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives at the Ronald Reagan Foundation and Library beginning July 6, 2012, Disney D23 will be releasing a ‘musical tour’ which features anthems and instantly recognizable music from nearly 85 years of the company’s history. From ‘Turkey in the Straw’ as used in Steamboat Willie to Walt Disney’s Disneyland dedication speech in 1955 to Captain America: The First Avenger, the musical tour, inspired by the more than 500 items from the Walt Disney Archives on display at the museum is sure to induce fond memories for all generations.
