‘Brave’ Clip Brawl

'Brave' Teaser Poster from Disney/PixarCourtesy of Walt Disney Studios New Zealand and Pixar Animation Studios, we have a newly released clip from Brave, which bows into theaters on June 22, 2012.

The clip, titled ‘Brawl,’ overlaps just a bit with the previously released ‘Suitors‘ clip. In the latter clip, we are introduced to Young Macintosh, Young MacGuffin and Wee Dingwall as they are presented to King Fergus and Queen Elinor for consideration of Princess Merida’s hand in marriage. The new clip carries the scene even further with an ensuing brawl that the bear king is forced to put an end to, though a certain set of triplets don’t necessarily seem to agree with that logic.

The rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland serve as the backdrop for Brave, a new tale that joins the land’s ancient lore — stories of epic battles and mystical legends passed down for generations. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, Brave is the grand adventure of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer who confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts to discover the true meaning of courage.

The film also features the voices of Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane. Brave, full of heart, memorable characters and Pixar’s signature humor, takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Dave Smith to Sign ‘Disney Trivia from the Vault’ at Disneyland Resort in July

'Disney Trivia From The Vault' by Dave SmithDisney Legend Dave Smith, founder of the Disney Archives and Chief Archivist Emeritus, will be making a special appearance at the Disneyland Resort on July 14, 2012 to sign his new book, Disney Trivia from the Vault.

Beginning with the July 1983 issue of Disney Channel Magazine, Dave Smith began answering Disney trivia questions from viewers of the Disney Channel. In the ensuing thirty years, his column has continued through multiple publications, including Disney Magazine, the on-line Disney Insider, and most recently the Disney D23 website.  ‘Ask Dave’ questions have come from Disney enthusiasts the world over, and have covered topics ranging from Cinderella’s last name (Tremaine) to the number of triangles covering the surface of Epcot’s Spaceship Earth (11,324 facets comprising 954 triangles.)

Over 1,100 questions have been fielded by Dave Smith, the now-retired Chief Archivist of The Walt Disney Company, and this book is a compendium of the most interesting and revealing of those queries. The book is divided into chapters that each cover an aspect of Disney history, including Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney films, Disney television, and Disney characters. Many of the questions bring up interesting information that has not been published elsewhere, and readers will delight in discovering some of the secrets behind their favorite movies and theme parks. ‘Did the same actress provide the voice of Maleficent, as well as the voice of Madame Leota, the head in the crystal ball in The Haunted Mansion?’ ‘Who was the first athelete to say “I’m going to Disneyland!”?’ Only Dave knows the answers!

The event will take place from 9 am – 11 am PT at the Disneyana Shop on Main Street, U.S.A. in the Disneyland® park. Disney Trivia from the Vault will be available for $9.99, plus tax beginning at shop opening on the day of release. Park admission is not included and is required.

Disney Trivia from the Vault is also available for pre-order on Amazon.com with a release date of June 26, 2012.

Disney Friends for Change Names Inaugural Ambassadors; $750K to be Donated

Disney Friends for Change AmbassadorsDisney Friends for Change, a global initiative that inspires kids and families to take action and make a difference in their communities, today announced that Disney Channel stars Debby Ryan (“Jessie”), Bella Thorne and Zendaya (“Shake It Up”), and Ross Lynch and Laura Marano (“Austin & Ally”) will serve as Friends for Change Ambassadors, encouraging kids and families to make a lasting, positive change by helping people, communities, and the planet.

In collaboration with select non-profit organizations, Disney Friends for Change Ambassadors will lead campaigns to engage millions of kids to take action and volunteer. Each nonprofit will receive a Disney Friends for Change grant to further the reach and impact of the themed campaign. In total, $750,000 will be awarded to the following three efforts:

  • “Helping Communities – Volunteer,” led by Debby Ryan and in collaboration with Free The Children (from June 29 – August 16)
  • “Helping People – Be a Leader,” featuring Bella Thorne and Zendaya, and in collaboration with Free The Children (from August 17 – September 27)
  • “Helping the Planet – Green Your Scene,” championed by Ross Lynch and Laura Marano, and in collaboration with TreePeople (from September 28 – November 30)

“We are so excited about the real difference kids are making every day using our action kits and volunteering in their communities,” said Leslie Goodman, senior vice president for Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy at The Walt Disney Company. “Through the leadership and encouragement of our Disney Friends for Change Ambassadors, we hope to inspire millions of more kids to take action and change their worlds.”

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The bond our viewers have with our talent is deep and powerful. As ambassadors of Friends for Change, our talent can serve as a megaphone for the importance of pro-active community involvement, motivating kids and their families to discover the many rewarding ways we can all make our world a better place to live.” He continued, “I often talk to my team about extending our value as a company beyond the TV screen, and this initiative does an exemplary job of that – and for this, I could not be prouder.”

As part of the program, Disney Channel will debut a series of interstitial messages, featuring the Disney Friends for Change Ambassadors beginning MONDAY, JUNE 18. Disney Channel, Radio Disney, and Disney.com will chronicle the Ambassadors throughout the summer as they volunteer and inspire kids of all ages to lead. Also part of the interstitial series and debuting FRIDAY, JUNE 29, Debby Ryan will share her personal experience volunteering in India through Disney Friends for Change with Free The Children, where she helped build a new school for a local village. Inspired by the stories and efforts of Disney Friends for Change kids, Debby helped to start the Ambassadors program.

To coincide with the on-air interstitials, Friends for Change will offer tools and resources at www.disney.com/friends where kids and families can discover additional ideas on how to make a difference. Site visitors are able to download action kits, learn more about the Ambassadors’ campaigns, and participate in the new Shout Out Module, an online forum that allows kids and families to motivate each other and exchange tips on actions to help their schools and neighborhoods. Families can also vote online to further support each Ambassador’s campaign and help thousands of more kids as a result.

VIDEO: Oswald Lost Short ‘Harem Scarem’ Re-Created in Storyboard Animation

For Disney D23 members fortunate enough to have attended one of the nationwide D23 Fanniversary events will no doubt recall the video below as being one of the many highlights of the event. Using sketches found within the Disney Archives, the staff produced a video re-creating what might have been a scene from the 1928 lost short, Harem Scarem, featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Yahoo! has now exclusively released the re-created segment online:

According to DisneyShorts.org, Oswald is a tourist in a Moroccan cafe and falls in love with a dancing girl, who he inevitably has to rescue from the clutches of Pete.

Oswald, who was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2006, was famously created by Walt Disney and proved to be extremely successful, inspiring a healthy merchandising campaign, before losing creative interest at the hands of Charles Mintz, who oversaw Winkler Productions, the company that produced the shorts that were distributed by Universal. In response to losing control over Oswald, along with many of his key animators, Disney and Ub Iwerks created Mickey Mouse in secret, producing the shorts directly for themselves and creating cartoon history.

Ronald Reagan Library to Offer Advance Tickets for First Time in Honor of Disney Archives Exhibit

Ronald Reagan at Disneyland ©DisneyDisney D23, the official fan club of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), is pleased to announce that it has joined forces with the Ronald Reagan Foundation and Library to offer museum tickets in advance for the first time ever. Available beginning June 26 at 8 am PT, tickets can be purchased online at http://www.reaganfoundation.org/tickets for dates beginning July 6 to visit the museum and the Disney Archives exhibition.

Purchasing tickets online will guarantee access to the museum when desired as they are entry time constricted to keep the flow of guests at an enjoyable pace. A limited number of same-day tickets will be available at the museum for those who do not wish to take advantage of the new system.

When purchasing tickets online, guests will also have the opportunity to reserve the museum’s GuideCam audio-tour system ($7) that doubles as a video and still camera, pre-purchase a meal, pre-purchase the ‘D23 Presents Treasures from the Walt Disney Archives’ exhibit catalog and pre-purchase a Presidential Library Passport, the perfect keepsake of your visit to the Reagan Library.

Ticket prices range from $6 for children through $21 for adults with a small discount for active D23 members. Active military personnel are allowed free admission for themselves with ID (other guests in the party are advised to purchase tickets in advance online).

In addition, D23 Members are still able to purchase tickets to an advance preview of the ‘D23 Presents Treasures from the Walt Disney Archives’ being held on June 30 whose attendees include Archives Director Becky Cline and Disney Legends Dave Smith and Bob Gurr.

Showcasing the boundless creativity and unbridled imagination that helped define 20th century entertainment, the 12,000-square-foot exhibit — for which the Reagan Library has constructed an entirely new exhibition space — opens July 6 and continues through April 2013.

More than 500 items have already been transported from the Walt Disney Archives in Burbank, Calif., to the Reagan Library by the exhibit’s Official Logistics Sponsor, UPS, which is ‘moving the magic’ for the planned nine-month run of ‘D23 Presents Treasures from the Walt Disney Archives.’

Many of the items have never left the Walt Disney Archives and are being publicly displayed for the very first time. Artifacts on exhibit will include:

  • An early drawing of Walt Disney’s first major cartoon character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
  • The actual 9½-foot tall head of the Maleficent dragon from Disneyland’s Fantasmic! nighttime spectacular
  • The fully rigged, 23-foot model of the Black Pearl pirate ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean films
  • Meticulously restored, handmade books used in the opening shots of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty
  • The very first ticket ever issued to Disneyland – No. 000001, with a face value of $1
  • Miniatures hand-built by Walt Disney, which helped lead to the development of Disneyland and Audio-Animatronic figures
  • The very first piece of Disney merchandise ever created: a child’s school writing tablet
  • Walt’s own Disneyland name tag – as Cast Member No. 1
  • A complete re-creation of Walt Disney’s formal office from the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif.
  • Original Audio-Animatronic figures from Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree and Pirates of the Caribbean
  • A letter to Walt Disney from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
  • Costumes worn by Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, Glenn Close in 101 Dalmatians and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Props and costumes used in the production of recent Disney blockbuster films, including National Treasure, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, TRON: Legacy and Marvel’s The Avengers

Additionally, ‘D23 Presents Treasures from the Walt Disney Archives’ features an entire section devoted to items that celebrate the connection between Walt Disney and Ronald Reagan. Photos, letters — including a hand-written draft of a letter from Reagan to the U.S. Postmaster General urging the creation of a special Walt Disney stamp — and an assortment of archival items underscore the close personal and professional relationship between the two men, and Reagan’s commitment to honoring Walt Disney’s legacy.

UPDATE #1 – 6/18/12 – Disney D23 members will be able to purchase tickets online at a discount beginning June 25. In addition, D23 members will get access to the exhibit as early as 9:30 am, even though the museum opens at 10 am daily.

‘La Luna’ Bambino Plush with Signed Storybook Now Available

'La Luna' Bambino plush with signed bookDisney Store has released a 12″ plush of Bambino, the star of the upcoming charming short La Luna, coupled with a 9″x9″ 40 page book based on the film which will open in theaters on Friday, playing before Disney/Pixar’s Brave. The accompanying book comes signed by director/writer Enrico Casarosa.

La Luna is the timeless fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big surprise is in store for the little boy as he discovers his family’s most unusual line of work. Should he follow the example of his Papa, or his Grandpa? Or will he be able to find his own way? This charming picture book is filled with incredible illustrations, and its unique story based on the Disney/Pixar short film is sure to delight.

This combination follows in the footsteps of a Nessie plush/signed book that was released for the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ short The Ballad of Nessie which quickly sold out, so it’s likely this item won’t be available for very long, especially after the short makes its theatrical debut.

For more information or to order this exclusive set, visit its page on DisneyStore.com.
