‘Iron Man 3′ Fun Facts, Suit and Prop Exhibition at Disneyland (Minor Spoilers)

'Iron Man 3' Payoff PosterWalt Disney Studios has provided us with these ‘fun facts’ for Marvel’s Iron Man 3, arriving in theaters on May 3, 2013, which we present to you below. In addition, Disney Parks today announced that beginning April 13, its Innoventions attraction located in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland in Anaheim, California will be hosting a ‘Stark Expo’ of sorts, featuring actual set pieces from the film. The ‘Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries’ exhibition will give Disneyland park guests the chance to see Tony Stark’s Hall of Armor, featuring Iron Man suits Mark I-VII -– the same suits featured in Iron Man 3. Guests will even be able to virtually ‘suit up’ via simulation technology, that will allow them to see what it’s like to operate the latest pieces of the Mark 42 Iron Man armor, even getting the chance to test out its infamous repulsor blasts. The exhibition is scheduled to run through September.

IRON MAN 3 FUN FACTS

  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is based on the comic created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. Iron Man first appeared in ‘Tales of Suspense #39′ in March, 1963. The film brings the favorite Iron Man series cast together: Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Iron Patriot/Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), alongside franchise newcomers Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) and The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).
  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 blends two classic storylines from the ‘Iron Man’ comics, bringing Tony Stark’s archenemy the Mandarin into play and combining that element with the Extremis storyline, which deals with the biological enhancement of humans.
  • Production on Marvel’s Iron Man 3 commenced on May 25, 2012, in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the production shot onstage at the Sony Screen Gems Studios and various locations in and around the city of Wilmington. Other filming locations included Raleigh, N.C. and Miami, Fla.
  • Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Marvel’s Iron Man 3. This time around, Downey Jr. reteams with director Shane Black, who previously directed Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
  • Academy Award®–winning actor Ben Kingsley plays the Mandarin, a frightening, modern-day villain bent on destroying Tony Stark and everything he stands for. To define the Mandarin’s persona, Kingsley came up with the Mandarin’s enigmatic voice and costume designer Louise Frogley collaborated with Marvel’s Head of Visual Development, Ryan Meinerding, to pull off a highly original look to his wardrobe.
  • For the first time ever in an Iron Man movie, Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, gets to don a suit in Marvel’s Iron Man 3. Paltrow did not mind wearing the suit, finding it to be light and comfortable — not to mention that her kids thought she was really cool.
  • The filmmakers looked far and wide for a young actor to play the part of Harley, a boy Tony Stark encounters when he is stranded in Tennessee. The part went to Ty Simpkins, whose natural and honest interaction with Robert Downey Jr. was just what the filmmakers were looking for. Ty was very surprised and elated when Robert Downey Jr. himself called to tell him he had won the part.
  • Jon Favreau appears again as Happy Hogan, Pepper and Tony’s trusted bodyguard, chauffeur and friend. For the first time in Marvel’s Iron Man franchise, Favreau stepped into the role of executive producer leaving the directing to Shane Black. Black was grateful to have Favreau’s input and experience so readily available, both on and off set.
  • In the Marvel’s Iron Man 3 story, after the events in New York with The Avengers, the U.S. Government needed a weapon that it could rely upon to protect the country, so it turns to James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to man the revamped War Machine armor, which has been reconfigured, painted red, white and blue and rebranded as The Iron Patriot.
  • When last seen in Marvel’s The Avengers, Tony Stark was wearing the Mark 8 suit. When Marvel’s Iron Man 3 opens, we see him in the Mark 42, so Stark’s been spending a lot of time tinkering in his workshop. The Mark 42 is called a prehensile suit, which allows individual pieces of the suit to fly to Stark and latch onto him at his command; however, the suit is definitely still a prototype.
  • For the first time in the “Iron Man” film franchise, the filmmakers go deeper into revealing more about Tony Stark’s Hall of Amor. The Hall of Armor houses all of the suits that Stark conceived, representing any and all of his ideas regarding suit technology.
  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 brings back the notable cliffside Stark Mansion. This set was built on a soundstage in Wilmington, N.C. and required 16 weeks of construction and set decoration in order to get it ready. The set was built on an impressive moving gimble, which allowed the entire structure to be tilted 45 degrees and reset at a moment’s notice, providing for the dramatic stunt work required to film the House Attack sequence.
  • For the filmmakers, creating the small town where Iron Man crash lands after his home is destroyed was something that could not be done on stage, so the production headed to Rose Hill, North Carolina. Rose Hill has its own claim to fame for having the world’s largest frying pan, which is 15 feet in diameter, weighs two tons and can cook 365 chickens at a time.
  • Filming in Rose Hill, North Carolina, was no easy task. As if five straight weeks of night shoots weren’t grueling enough, the short summer days made for a tight schedule. The very complicated and elaborate sequences meant that the crew was always racing to complete work before dawn broke.
  • Some of the exterior shots in Rose Hill were winter scenes complete with snowfall. Since it was summer in North Carolina during filming, 90-degree temperatures were common, but the local background extras took it all in stride, despite the fact they were dressed in full winter clothing.
  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 showcases one of Marvel Studios’ most complicated action sequences to date. In the film, 13 people fall out of a plane and Iron Man attempts to save them all — even though he can only carry four. With the help of the Red Bull skydiving team, and with rigorous and meticulous planning by second-unit director Brian Smrz and stunt coordinator Jeff Habberstad, 630 jumps over 10 days went off without a hitch.
  • The majority of scenes involving The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) were shot in Miami. Production designer Bill Brzeski created The Mandarin’s compound there by shooting the exteriors on the 10-acre grounds of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark built in 1916, and the interiors were shot at a private waterfront residence in South Beach.
  • Prop master Russell Bobbit, who worked on Marvel’s Iron Man and Iron Man 2, returned to work with Marvel Studios on Iron Man 3. One of Russell’s favorite props was The Mandarin’s set of ten rings. Bobbit collaborated with jewelers through several concepts and manufactured specific stones for the rings, giving each ring a custom paint job. The process took a few months in order to get the rings right and ready for Ben Kingsley’s first day. Bobbit was able to use the same ‘ten rings’ images he designed for use in the first Iron Man film.
  • Florida pop-art artist Bask was hired to create distinctive artwork for the office and bedroom of the Mandarin’s residence that would mesh with the villain’s persona. Although the basis of Bask’s work is pop art, it is infused with influences from comic books, graffiti and punk rock fliers.
  • On Friday, July 6, 2012, the production moved to a local Wilmington hospital to shoot Tony Stark delivering an impromptu message to the world’s press. While the crew was only there for six hours, this happened to be the exact same time executive producer Stephen Broussard and his wife Claire were delivering their first child at that very same hospital. Once his wife and new baby boy, Rex Sebastian Broussard, were confirmed healthy and happy, Broussard was actually able to visit his friends on set for a few minutes. He describes the whole day as ‘even more surreal and wonderful than I would have thought. Work followed me to the birth of my son.’ Soon after, at the ‘half-way there’ party for the crew, Robert Downey Jr. raffled items to raise money for the hospital’s Women’s & Children’s ward.
  • Iron Man 3 pairs Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Kingsley working together for the first time. Both actors also played memorable roles in films directed by Richard Attenborough (Downey Jr. in Attenborough’s Chaplin and Ben Kingsley in Attenborough’s Gandhi). The first day they met on set, Downey Jr. and Kingsley snapped a photo together to send to their mutual friend.

DUSTY (Dane Cook) ©2013 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Along with official casting announcements, Walt Disney Studios has provided us with hi-res images (billed as ‘character poses’) along with official character descriptions for the cast of DisneyToon’s Planes, taking off in theaters on August 9, 2013.

Inspired by the world of Cars from Pixar Animation Studios, Disney’s Planes is an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing — and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Below is our gallery of characters from Planes. Click on any of the thumbnails below to see a larger version. If a resize arrow appears, you may click on it to view a larger version of the image:

TEAM DUSTY

Dusty (voice of Dane Cook)
Dusty is a plane with high hopes—literally. Crop duster by trade, this single-prop plane sees himself soaring alongside his high-flying heroes in an international race. The fact that he’s not really built for competitive racing doesn’t deter him from pursuing his dream—but his fear of heights just might. With a little help from his friends—and a WWII vet with wisdom to spare—Dusty takes off on an adventure of a lifetime, going prop-to-prop with champions while daring to reach heights he never imagined possible.

Skipper Riley (voice of Stacy Keach)
A reclusive old Navy Corsair, Skipper was an ace flier and top instructor of the esteemed Jolly Wrenches squadron until an incident during a combat mission took him off the front lines and left him grounded for life. These days, Skipper keeps to himself, but his quiet existence is turned upside down when an ambitious and persistent Dusty solicits Skipper’s aerial expertise—and gets a few life lessons in the process. But Skipper—who’s never really come to terms with his past—finds that he has a few things to learn, too, and while coaching Dusty to fly faster and smarter, the teacher becomes the student.

Leadbottom (voice of Cedric the Entertainer)
Leadbottom is a puttering old biplane and a grumbling taskmaster, a real “tank-half-empty” kind of guy. As the proprietor of Vitaminamulch, a special—albeit putrid—blend of vitamins, minerals, and mulch that works miracles when sprayed on crops, Leadbottom has no time for Dusty’s far-fetched flights of fancy. There are too many crops to spray and not enough hours in the day to spray them. For Leadbottom, it’s work first, then … well, more work.

Dottie (voice of Teri Hatcher)
Dottie is a forklift who co-owns and operates Chug and Dottie’s Fill ’n Fly service station. As Dusty’s practical and say-it-like-it-is friend—not to mention his ace mechanic—Dottie hopes to keep his high-flying hopes grounded in reality: Dusty isn’t built to race and chasing his dream is downright dangerous. No matter what he decides, however, Dottie will always have his back.

Chug (voice of Brad Garrett)
Fuel truck Chug is a guy’s guy. He works hard as co-owner of Chug and Dottie’s Fill ’n Fly service station—and plays hard indulging in his own fuel from time to time. He has a big personality and is a bold supporter of Dusty’s high-flying endeavors. Indeed, he’s not only Dusty’s buddy, he’s his coach and biggest fan. And if Chug can’t help Dusty reach new heights, he’ll find someone who can.

THE COMPETITION

Ripslinger (voice of Roger Craig Smith)
With more wins than he can count and an abundance of fans, Ripslinger is wings-down the biggest name in air racing—and he knows it. But despite sky’s-the-limit funding and state-of-the-art equipment, the world champion still doesn’t play fair—especially when it comes to a small-town plane with zero racing experience. Dusty doesn’t belong in Ripslinger’s sport and his mere presence makes the pro’s fuel boil. And if Dusty’s inexperience doesn’t take him out of the race, Ripslinger’s vast empire includes a couple of underhanded sidekicks to take care of business.

Ned & Zed (voice of Gabriel Iglesias)
Team Ripslinger’s bombastic racers Ned and Zed specialize in sabotage. Lacking the skills to actually outrace the competition, they simply eliminate it, propelling boss Ripslinger to victory every single time. Zed, a rowdy and reckless flier, and Ned, a strange bird himself, may not be the sharpest props in the hangar, but they have figured out how to draft off Ripslinger’s fame.

El Chupacabra (voice of Carlos Alazraqui)
The intensely charming El Chupacabra is a legend in Mexico (just ask him). Powered by his passion for racing (not to mention the elusive Rochelle), this caped Casanova is anything but low-key—his booming voice and charismatic presence are as big as his oversized engine. His cohorts aren’t really sure what is truth and what is delusion when it comes to El Chu, but one thing is beyond doubt: he races with a whole lot of heart and more dramatic flair than is recommended at high altitudes.

Rochelle (voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus)
Rochelle is a tough racer and the pride of the Great White North. Always confident and capable, she got her start running mail to small towns in Quebec, picking up home remedies for mechanical maladies along the way. She also developed a knack for fast travel that ultimately inspired her to give air racing a try. Rochelle never looked back (this competitive contender doesn’t need to). She is relentlessly pursued by charmer El Chupacabra, but steadfast Rochelle is much too focused on winning the race to return his affections.

Bulldog (voice of John Cleese)
Bulldog has been racing longer than every other racer on the circuit. As the oldest and arguably wisest, he remembers a time before GPS, when real racers trusted their gyros and navigated by the stars. When it comes to racing, it boils down to two qualities, says Bulldog: good flying and sportsmanship. Period. While the competition secretly wonders if the aging plane is past his prime, he flies his way onto the leader board again and again, proving that this Bulldog has lost none of his bite.

Ishani (voice of Priyanka Chopra)
The reigning Pan-Asian champion from India, Ishani is easy on the eyes, but ruthless in the skies. Thanks to her high-speed competitiveness and notable talent, she has amassed more than a billion loyal fans—including one rookie racer who turns to her for guidance. Exotic and mysterious, Ishani is full of surprises, but always has her eye on the prize.

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

Bravo & Echo (voices of Val Kilmer & Anthony Edwards)
Armed with stellar instincts, incredible aerial abilities and outstanding service records, Bravo and Echo are two of the Jolly Wrenches’ top troops. These fighter jets happen to be avid air racing fans, too, with a special affinity for Dusty, who’s adopted their Jolly Wrenches insignia. And as far as the racers are concerned, it doesn’t hurt to have a couple soldiers nearby should any plane falter under the immense pressure of the world’s most rigorous rally.

Roper (voice of Sinbad)
This irascible race official pitty delivers the rules for the North American Wings Around the Globe time trials with a matter-a-fact personality and a wry sense of humor. In fact, Roper never misses an opportunity to offer his own take on the events that unfold. With sly remarks and colorful commentary, Roper is funny but firm in his dealings with the race and the racers.

Colin Cowling (voice of Colin Cowherd)
Affable blimp Colin Cowling attended the prestigious Zeppelin Broadcasting School and began his career as the play-by-play voice for the Pacific Coast Balloon Races. He got his big break—so to speak—when his Eye-In-The-Sky-In-Sports weekly recap show was noticed by producers of Racing Sports Network (RSN).
