Product Description
Roy Chapin was one of America's great automotive pioneers, founder of the Hudson and Essex motor car companies. More so, after a visit to France and Germany, where he discovered an extensive network of paved roads under construction, he became an advocate of a national network of highways for the U.S. He was involved with the Lincoln Highway Association which planned the construction of the first coast-to-coast concrete highway and became chairman of the Highway Transport Committee during World War I, taking charge in running America's road traffic. Hudson and Essex were very successful car companies and Chapin became a multi-millionaire with a massive estate in Grosse Point. He was also among the first to introduce an economy car, the Terraplane. Chapin's success as an innovator and a businessman resulted in his appointment as Secretary of Commerce at the end of Herbert Hoover's term. But it was too late for Chapin to have any meaningful impact on the nation's economic devastation. Chapin's story is a must read for anyone seeking inspiration and direction on the road to success. it is also the history of some of America's great classic and antique cars.
