ABC Family, the Millennial-skewing network, continues to go from strength-to-strength as it grows its lineup of groundbreaking original programming. To join this summer’s breakout hit, “Switched At Birth,” the network has given the greenlight to an additional season of “Make it or Break It” and a back-order pick-up of “The Lying Game,” it was announced today by Michael Riley, president ABC Family. Riley also announced development of four new pilots, including two dramas, “Bunheads” and “Intercept,” and two comedies, “Baby Daddy” and “Village People.”
ABC Family has given a back-season order of 22 episodes to the network’s one-hour original drama, “Switched at Birth,” giving the break-out series a full first season order, Michael Riley, President, ABC Family has announced. ”Switched at Birth,” premiering Monday nights at 9:00PM ET/PT, will air its summer finale on Monday, August 8th. The series, which premiered this June with a 10-episode episode order, is scheduled to return in early 2012.
Separated at birth, identical twins Emma Becker and Sutton Mercer have led very different lives, each oblivious to the other’s existence until circumstances bring them back together. Blind ambition and bad behavior have a queen bee headed for a fiery demise unless she can pull off a high school miracle — turning a shy, unassuming wallflower into Prom Queen material, in the ABC Family two-hour original movie, “Teen Spirit,” starring Cassie Scerbo (“Make It Or Break It,” “Bring It On: In It To Win It”), Lindsey Shaw (“10 Things I Hate About You,” “Pretty Little Liars”) and Tim Gunn (upcoming “The Smurfs” feature, “Project Runway”), premiering Sunday, August 7 at 8:00PM ET/PT. The movie premieres as part of the network’s annual “Campus Crush” programming event.
On Tuesday, May 31st, ABC Family will launch “Switched at Birth: Hunt for the Code,” an online scavenger hunt game, as part of the network’s launch of its new one-hour scripted original drama series “Switched at Birth,” premiering Monday, June 6th at 9:00PM ET/PT. “Switched at Birth” tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a working class neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
ABC Family has acquired the Walt Disney Pictures film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides from Disney-ABC Domestic Television, it was announced today by Tom Zappala, executive vice president, Program Acquisitions & Scheduling, ABC Cable Networks Group. The deal gives ABC Family the first-window rights to the network television premiere. The film is slated to premiere on the network in 2013.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is one of this summer’s most highly-anticipated movies,” said Zappala. “Audiences love this franchise the world over for its excitement, charm and all-out sense of good fun. We’re thrilled to add this installment, in addition to the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, to our theatrical slate.”
Seventeen magazine and ABC Family are joining forces in an effort to bring awareness to the youth issue of digital abuse and bullying. The initiative, Delete Digital Drama, will launch this summer in the magazine’s August 2011 issue and on the network beginning July 5th. As part of the campaign, ABC Family will premiere the two-hour original movie, Cyberbully, starring Emily Osment (“Hannah Montana”), Kelly Rowan (“The OC”) and Kay Panabaker (“No Ordinary Family”), premiering Sunday, July 17 at 8:00PM ET/PT. As part of the partnership, Seventeen will feature a multi-page story in the August issue of the magazine, which will include stories from readers and ABC Family talent about their own experiences with bullying.
BC Family continues to be the television destination for all Harry Potter™ fans, this time by airing the U.S. premiere of the new “Harry Potter™ and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” trailer on Wednesday, April 27th. The trailer will air during a showing of “Happy Gilmore,” which airs 7:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT.
The premiere of the new trailer will give fans a glimpse at the epic finale of the “Harry Potter™” film series, including moments from such scenes as Harry, Ron and Hermione escaping from Gringotts bank, the Room of Requirement fire storm, Mrs. Weasley taking on Bellatrix Lestrange, and Harry and Voldemort’s last stand. Building on its most expansive programming slate ever, ABC Family has picked up an additional one-hour scripted drama, “Jane By Design.” The drama is in addition to the network’s four previously announced series pick-ups set to launch this summer, the one-hour dramas “The Nine Lives of Chloe King,” “Switched at Birth” and “The Lying Game,” and the half-hour multi-cam comedy series, “State of Georgia” (formerly “The Great State of Georgia”). “Jane By Design” is set to premiere in early 2012.
Sara Rue, Barry Watson, Valerie Harper and Fred Willard will star the ABC Family original movie “My Future Boyfriend,” premiering Sunday, April 10 at 8 pm ET/PT.
In “My Future Boyfriend” (former working title “Always & Forever”), P-A-X-497/341, aka “Pax” (Barry Watson), a curious young man from the well-ordered but loveless future, travels to present day New Orleans in search of romance novelist Elizabeth Barrett (Sara Rue) – whose book he has come upon during an archeological dig in the year 3127. Hoping Elizabeth can explain the concept of love to him, which is now nonexistent in his time, Pax embarks on an adventure filled with new discoveries.
