Earlier this morning, awards show host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominations for the primary categories for the upcoming 85th annual Academy Awards at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Disney’s only nominations announced thus far — unsurprisingly — have been for Best Animated Feature Film in which Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar Animation Studio’s Brave were all nominated. Other films in the category are Laika’s Paranorman and Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ other animated film, Paperman, was nominated for Best Short against Adam and Dog, Fresh Guacamole, Head over Heels and Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare.’ Meanwhile, Marvel’s The Avengers was nominated for Achievement in Visual Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams and Dan Sudick).

Otherwise, the morning belonged to Lincoln, produced by Dreamworks but marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Lincoln wracked up twelve nominations including: Best Performance for Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Performance for Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Best Achievement in Directing (Steven Spielberg), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Achievement in Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Achievement in Costume Design (Joanna Johnston), Achievement in Film Editing (Michael Kahn), Best Original Score (John Williams), Achievement in Production Design (Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson), Achievement in Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins) and Best Picture, where it competes against Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Lining’s Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Amour.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Disney’s ‘For Your Consideration’ Site Features Scripts, Music and Images from Films

'Brave' For Your Consideration AdOver the past couple of months, Walt Disney Studios has been slowly ramping up its ‘For Your Consideration’ website (available at WaltDisneyStudiosAwards.com), dedicated to promoting various aspects of its films for consideration by the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Oscar nominations/awards.

Although the site is still missing a few promised elements, such as the music from the Walt Disney Animation Studios short, Paperman, most of them are there, including an introductory video which introduces and goes behind the scenes of the promoted films: Frankenweenie, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and Paperman.

The site also offers biographies of those involved in production, full songs from the films as well as the screenplays for Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph.

Lasseter to Participate in CG Animation Panel Moderated by Tom Sito

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced it will be conducting a panel on computer-generated film animation ‘from Vertigo to Toy Story to the 3D spectacles of today.’ The panel, moderated by legendary animator and historian Tom Sito, is titled ‘The Development of the Digital Animator,’ and well be held Monday, May 21 at 7:30 pm PT in Beverly Hills as part of the Academy’s Marc Davis Celebration of Animation.

When Toy Story burst onto the scene in 1995, computer-generated imagery was, for many, a bold new technique in animation. However, its lengthy and meticulous development can be traced back to its first public exposure with the mesmerizing title sequence for Vertigo (1958). Of equal importance to the technical developments were the influential animators and designers who devised artistic uses for engineering advances.

Scheduled panelists include:

Rebecca Allen, an experimental filmmaker who has worked at the New York Institute of Technology and MIT. She collaborated on ‘the Catherine Wheel’ with Twyla Tharp and made landmark music videos for Kraftwerk, Mark Mothersbaugh and Peter Gabriel. She currently holds a professorship in the Department of Design|Media Arts at UCLA.

Philippe Bergeron, a CG animator and landscape designer who teamed up with Daniel Langlois and two other directors to create one of the first CG characters in the 1985 short Tony de Peltrie. He has worked at Digital Productions and Whitney/Demos Productions and is president of PaintScaping, Inc.
David Em, who began producing digital art in the 1970s and has worked as an independent artist in such research laboratories as the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Apple Computer’s Advanced Technology Group. He is the first digital artist to have his papers collected and preserved by the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art.

Tim Johnson, a director and animator who began his career at Chicago’s Post Effects. In the 1980s, while at Pacific Data Images, he animated the first digital Pillsbury Doughboy. His directing credits include Antz, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and Over the Hedge.

Jeff Kleiser, the co-founder of Digital Effects, New York’s first CG house. Kleiser later co-founded both Kleiser-Walczak Construction Company and Synthespian Studios. His credits include Tron, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, Stargate and X-Men The Last Stand.

Bill Kroyer, an animator and director whose credits include Tron, FernGully: The Last Rainforest and Scooby-Doo. Kroyer received an Academy Award® nomination for his 1988 short film Technological Threat. He is currently Director of Digital Arts at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University.

John Lasseter, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Feature Animation and Pixar Animation Studios, whose credits include Pixar’s first short, the Academy Award-winning Luxo Jr., and the feature films Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Cars and Cars 2.

Tom Sito, a veteran Hollywood animator and historian whose credits include Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Shrek and Hop.

Phil Tippett, an Academy Award-winning visual effects animation director whose credits include Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jurassic Park, The Spiderwick Chronicles and several films in the Twilight Saga.

Diana Walczak, the CG animator and director who co-founded Kleiser-Walczak Construction Company and Synthespian Studios. With Jeff Kleiser, she created the first female Synthespian performer, Dozo, for the 1989 music video ‘Don’t Touch Me.’ Her credits include the digital opera Monsters of Grace and the feature films X-Men and Surrogates.

Tickets for ‘The Development of the Digital Animator’ are on sale now. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with valid ID. They may be purchased online at Oscars.org, by mail, or in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the program when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit Oscars.org.

Oscars: Pixar Down but Not Out, ‘Muppets’ Strike a (Con)Chord; DreamWorks Disney’s Savior

Nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced earlier today by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence in Hollywood, California. In regards to Disney films’ performances in the main category, there were, unfortunately, little surprises, but it’s unfortunate to report that even in the technical categories, Disney failed to shine. DreamWorks — whom Disney markets and distributes films for, much as they once did for Pixar Animation Studios — shines across the board, however, in particular for the Steven Spielberg epic War Horse.

It should come as no surprise that Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2 failed to make the cut, despite that two of the nominees (both from DreamWorks Animation — no relation) are essentially sequels as well: Kung Fu Panda 2 and the Shrek-spinoff, Puss in Boots. There is hope for the animation house, however, as the gem of a short film, La Luna from Enrico Casarosa has been nominated in the Short Film (Animated) category. While the short has some stiff competition, a win would certainly be a boon for both Pixar and Disney who can use the win to help promote Brave, for which La Luna serves as the opener (not that being Oscar nominated is a bad runner-up prize itself).

Perhaps the biggest surprise is not who was nominated for the Original Song category, but that only two nominees were selected. Bret McKenzie’s ‘Man or Muppet’ Disney’s The Muppets shares that distinction with another animated film, ‘Real in Rio’ from Rio.

For DreamWorks, the acclaimed film The Help received a nod for Best Picture as well as Actress in a Leading Role (Viola Davis) and Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer).

War Horse led the battle with several nominations including Best Picture along with Original Score (John Williams), Art Direction (Production Design: Anne Seibel; Set Decoration: Hélène Dubreuil), Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Sound Editing (Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom) and Sound Mixing (Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson and Stuart Wilson).

Even Real Steel picked up a nomination in the Visual Effects category (Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor and Swen Gillberg), which Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides had been shortlisted, but didn’t make the cut.

The 84th annual Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

‘Muppets,’ ‘Gnomeo,’ ‘Pooh’ Among Films Shortlisted for Original Song Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 39 songs from eligible motion pictures have been shortlisted to be considered for nominees as Original Song fr the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Nine of the selected songs, which represents about 25% of the total list, come directly from Disney films. The number becomes even more impressive if you consider that two of the other shortlisted songs are affiliated with The Walt Disney Company: Star Spangled Man’ from Captain America: The First Avenger, which of course is a property of Disney’s own Marvel, and ‘The Living Proof’ from The Help, a DreamWorks film which was marketed and distributed by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures.

Disney’s potential nominees are: ‘The World I Knew’ (Disneynature’s African Cats); ‘Collision of Worlds’ (Disney/Pixar’s Cars); ‘Hello Hello’ and ‘Love Builds a Garden’ (Touchstone Pictures’ Gnomeo & Juliet); ‘Life’s a Happy Song,’ ‘Man or Muppet’ and ‘Pictures in My Head’ (Disney’s The Muppets); ‘The Backson Song’ and ‘So Long’ (Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Winnie the Pooh).

On Thursday, January 5, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting. If no song receives an average score of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees in the category. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve that score, they shall be the nominees. A DVD copy of the song clips will be made available to those branch members who are unable to attend the screening and who request it for home viewing. A mail-in ballot will be provided.

Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film achieve a score of 8.25 or more, the two songs with the highest scores will be the nominees.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 am PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Disney/Pixar’s ‘La Luna’ Shortlisted for Animated Short Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that out of the 44 animated short films submitted for Oscar consideration, ten have been shortlisted to be further considered for nominations in the category. Among the ten selected is La Luna from Pixar Animation Studios, the short that will play before Brave when it opens next year. Pixar Animation Studios has quietly arranged for the short to show this year enough to meet eligibility requirements, meaning an Oscar nomination — let alone a win — will become a valuable marketing tool for Brave in 2012.

Written and directed by Enrico Casarosa, La Luna is a charming story of a young boy named Bambino who is caught between his father and grandfather who see the world in completely different ways. On his first excursion at his family’s unusual occupation, Bambino soon learns to that it’s okay to choose his own path in life.

The other shorts being considered are:

Dimanche/Sunday, Patrick Doyon, director (National Film Board of Canada)

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, directors (Moonbot Studios LA, LLC)

I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat, Matthew O’Callaghan, director and Sam Register, executive producer (Warner Bros. Animation Inc.)

  • Luminaris, Juan Pablo Zaramella, director (JPZtudio)
  • Magic Piano, Martin Clapp, director and Hugh Welchman, producer (BreakThru Films)
  • A Morning Stroll, Grant Orchard, director and Sue Goffe, producer (Studio AKA)
  • Paths of Hate, Damian Nenow, director (Platige Image)
  • Specky Four-Eyes, Jean-Claude Rozec, director and Mathieu Courtois, producer (Vivement Lundi!)
  • Wild Life, Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, directors (National Film Board of Canada)

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2012.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
