‘Monsters University’ Director Hints at Boo Tribute, Talks Prequel Timeline

'Monsters University' Teaser PosterEarlier this month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Monsters University director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae, along with John Goodman, for a few minutes as part of a roundtable at the Disney/Pixar presentation at the 110th American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Following up on a tip I had received the day before, I took the opportunity to explore what overlap — if any — we might see between Monsters University and the original Monsters Inc. film. Unfortunately Scanlon nearly skirted the question altogether: ‘Well I don’t want to say that, I think you should wait and see. I will say that it’s teeing up to the original film nicely.’

Spin Master, who recently also began releasing products in support of Monsters Inc., previously created waves in the Disney universe when it served as the master licensee for TRON: Legacy, infusing technology in play that hadn’t been seen before. The tradition continues with Monsters University in which some of its most advanced toys don’t use batteries at all, yet manage to produce detailed and intricate amusing actions just the same.
