Report: Disney to Release Revolutionary iPad App That Synchronizes with Television Broadcasts

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Disney is teaming up with Nielsen to produce an app for the iPad which will allow the app to provide content in real-time along with the broadcast of its new drama ‘My Generation.’

According to the article, the app will provide interactive opportunities for the viewer who will be able to participate in polls, trivia, twitter feeds and the like, all in relation to the specific program they are watching, whenever they are watching it. The app takes advantage of technology developed by Nielsen called audio watermarking in which the app’s content is triggered by audio cues from the television program through the iPad’s built-in microphone, which means the app will work even if the viewer is watching the show on a DVR.

The app is expected to be released tonight in anticipation of the series premiere of ‘My Generation’ on Thursday, September 23.

StarGreetz: Want a Custom, Personalized Message from Your Favorite Disney Character? There’s an App for That.

StarGreetz App for iPhoneStarGreetz, Inc., a company specializing in personalized phone messages from celebrities (fictional and not), launched their iPhone App today, aptly titled StarGreetz.

As of the time of this writing, NFL Philadelphia Eagles player Brandon Graham stands alone as the only actual human lending his voice to the message service, the rest of the contributors are some of the most popular Disney characters of all time. Disney/Pixar characters such as Sheriff Woody and Doc Hudson and Nightmare Before Christmas’ Jack Skellington join classic Disney favorites such as Cinderella, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Donald Duck and even Minnie Mouse (with more on the way).

Between the lot is a virtually endless number of configurable greetings, ringtones and alerts, all of which feature the character addressing the recipient by name. The list of names is pretty extensive, but in the event your (or the recipient’s) name isn’t available, there doesn’t appear to be any generic way to address the individual or skip it altogether. Once you manage to configure your desired message, you can preview the full message at no cost to you before you decide to purchase. If you decide to purchase through the app, once iTunes authorizes the charge, you are provided the opportunity to email the purchase to yourself (or whomever you wish). Although this is the most convenient method of purchasing, it also reveals the biggest shortcoming with the process in that the email simply contains a direct link to an .MP3 file. While the intent is to use iTunes (or whichever method your mobile phone uses to receive music files) to sync the message to your iPhone, in most cases, the message will simply start playing in your browser with no apparent way to save it. Thus it will require some technical know-how to get around this issue. I couldn’t figure out how to save the message even when opening the email directly on my iPhone. That said, it should be a relatively simple fix on StarGreetz’s end to make it easier to use the program, but there’s no question it can be a potential showstopper for many. I also managed to quickly spot a typo in the app which is simple aesthetic as the message itself was fine.

The positives, however, greatly outweigh the negatives. This is a quick, easy and fun way to have your favorite characters (if they’re included) create a very customizable, personal greeting or ringtone for you or your loved ones. You obviously won’t be getting Tom Hanks as Woody, but the voices are all pretty darn good, using talent approved by Disney. And the bottom line is it won’t cost you anything to download the app and try it out.

While the app itself is free, as is sampling the selected message choices (as well as online), there is an in-app charge of $2.99 per message charged through iTunes, so it can get very addictive and expensive fast. Consider yourself warned. The website also charges $2.99 per message and delivers them through SMS (with the regular restrictions, details available on their website) — the app is definitely a much easier method of exploring, testing and purchasing the messages.

Although StarGreetz is currently available only online and on the iPhone, the company has plans to release native apps for the Android, Blackberry and other devices soon.

To download the StarGreetz app, click here.

ABC News Releases Innovative Application for iPad

ABC News today announced the release of a new application for the Apple iPad, available in the Apple App Store. The new application takes full advantage of the form and functionality of the iPad, using as the principal navigation tool a unique interactive three dimensional globe on which news stories appear. The launch of the ABC News iPad app marks the second time in recent months that the Disney/ABC Television Group has created an innovative video offering for the new platform. In April, DATG became the first to bring ad-supported video to the iPad via the acclaimed ABC Player app which has proven to be tremendously successful, with more than 928,000 downloads and 5.9 million episodes started in just over three months.

With the unique three dimensional interface, users can spin the ABC News globe by touching the face of the iPad and then can choose the stories of most interest to them (ABC News iPad Demo Video). Users are able to define the sorts of stories that populate their ABC News globe on the iPad, from politics, health, entertainment and more. ABC News’ library of archival footage is available as an option for users to explore “This Month in History.” Users can set up their globe to include stories from “Good Morning America, “World News with Diane Sawyer,” “Nightline,” “20/20″ and “This Week,” can select stories to be bookmarked and viewed later, and can share the stories they select with friends through Facebook, Twitter or email.

The ABCNEWS.com site is also now optimized in HTML5 and is available on the iPad with full functionality for all features, including video. At launch, the ABC News application is sponsored by the Jeep(r) Brand and Truvia(tm) natural sweetener.

“ABC News continues to leverage technology to tell the stories no one else can, and this innovative new app is the next step in our effort to redefine broadcast journalism for today’s consumer,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chair Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group. “Paired with ABC’s hugely successful entertainment app, our newest addition gives consumers the best in news and primetime programming on a very powerful and popular platform.”

“We’re excited to provide Apple iPad users with a unique news application that features the best of ABC News reporting and takes full advantage of what the iPad has to offer to news consumers in an exciting and imaginative way,” said David Westin, president, ABC News.
