‘Paperman’ Scores Oscar, Inspires Antics During and After Win
To virtually no one’s surprise, the revolutionary Paperman short from Walt Disney Animation Studios claimed the industry’s top honor for Short Film (Animated). Director John Kahrs (pictured, left) took to the stage to receive the accolades with a short, yet sincere speech.
Meanwhile, according to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Kristina Reed (also pictured, left) decided to celebrate the win by tossing kiss-accented paper planes into the audience from her seat in the mezzanine. Although none of the projectiles appeared to approach the stage, Reed was reportedly temporarily ejected from the Dolby Theatre, only to return a few minutes later after a ‘small protest.’
After exiting the stage, Kahrs — still fresh from his win — continued on to the press tent where winners entertained a few questions from the accredited press, chosen by lottery for each winner. It was here that Kahrs encountered actor David Arquette who received his credentials via the Howard Stern show on Sirius/XM satellite radio. Among several questions from other reporters actually relevant to the short (for which Kahrs remained humble and spoke highly of his fellow animators at the studio), Arquette contributed the following exchange:
DA: I’m an actor, David Arquette.
JK: I recognized you.
DA:I do lots of voices. I can do a low voice. I can do a high voice.
JK: This is my next step, actually, because I didn’t use any words so this is the thing I’m terrified of is actually putting voices in the animations.
DA: So put nice actors but, you know, because you have to stay in the room with them. But what are you most excited about in your Oscar gift basket?
JK: Actually, the Oscar gift basket was very modest.
DA: But there were condoms in there. If you don’t use them, I can use them, bro.
When he’s not hitting up Oscar winners for their loot, Arquette provides the voice of Skully, the parrot from Disney Junior’s ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ which is produced by Disney Television Animation, located at the Walt Disney Studios, across the street from the Feature Animation building.

Earlier this morning, awards show host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominations for the primary categories for the upcoming 85th annual Academy Awards at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Disney’s only nominations announced thus far — unsurprisingly — have been for Best Animated Feature Film in which Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar Animation Studio’s Brave were all nominated. Other films in the category are Laika’s Paranorman and Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Otherwise, the morning belonged to Lincoln, produced by Dreamworks but marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Lincoln wracked up twelve nominations including: Best Performance for Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Performance for Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Best Achievement in Directing (Steven Spielberg), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Achievement in Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Achievement in Costume Design (Joanna Johnston), Achievement in Film Editing (Michael Kahn), Best Original Score (John Williams), Achievement in Production Design (Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson), Achievement in Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins) and Best Picture, where it competes against Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Lining’s Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Amour.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. Disney’s ‘For Your Consideration’ Site Features Scripts, Music and Images from Films
Over the past couple of months, Walt Disney Studios has been slowly ramping up its ‘For Your Consideration’ website (available at WaltDisneyStudiosAwards.com), dedicated to promoting various aspects of its films for consideration by the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Oscar nominations/awards.
Although the site is still missing a few promised elements, such as the music from the Walt Disney Animation Studios short, Paperman, most of them are there, including an introductory video which introduces and goes behind the scenes of the promoted films: Frankenweenie, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and Paperman.
The site also offers biographies of those involved in production, full songs from the films as well as the screenplays for Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph.

Disney Cruise Line Recognized by Industry for Conservation Efforts
In recognition for making notable contributions to advance the environmental aspects of cruising, Disney Cruise Line was presented with the Environmental Initiative Award at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards 2012. Disney Cruise Line is dedicated to minimizing its impact on the environment through efforts focused on utilizing new technologies, increasing fuel efficiency, minimizing waste and supporting conservation worldwide.
“Our persistent focus on innovative environmental initiatives starts with developing leading-edge fuel and energy efficiencies on our ships, but it doesn’t stop there,” said Bert Swets, vice president, marine and technical operations at Disney Cruise Line. “Our approach on shore extends to conservation and animal research efforts on our private island, Castaway Cay, inspiring and educating children and families to care about the environment, and engaging the communities in our ports of call.”
The Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards judging panel was comprised of industry and subject-matter experts from around the world.
Innovative Fuel and Energy Efficiencies
Disney Cruise Line made history as the first cruise line to use an innovative, non-toxic hull coating that increases fuel efficiency by reducing surface resistance in open water and continues to maximize fuel and energy efficiencies by automating onboard air conditioning systems for optimum use; repurposing air conditioning condensation for both laundry and deck cleaning, saving tons of fresh water each day, and installing energy-efficient lighting.
Recycling
Across the four ships in the Disney fleet, more than 650 tons of metals, glass, plastic and paper are eliminated from traditional waste streams each year through recycling, more than 5,000 tons to date.
Onshore Activities
No other cruise line incorporates conservation and animal research quite like Disney does. On Castaway Cay, Disney researchers are conducting a multi-year project studying how transplanted long-spined sea urchins can rebuild coral reefs. Guests may participate in a hands-on training experience with live stingrays during a 60-minute, instructor-led educational program.
Creative Storytelling Inspires and Educates
Disney Cruise Line shares environmental programs and educates others as an integral part of the company’s goal to inspire children and adults to take environmental action in their everyday lives. Guests can take an exclusive backstage look at environmental efforts through the “Behind the Waves” video and see characters from “The Lion King” inspire environmental action by showcasing small steps everyone can take in “Safety Smart Goes Green.”
Disney strives to engage the communities in our ports of call in unique and memorable ways. By tapping into the company’s legendary storytelling, Disney created an activity booklet in cooperation with Friends of the Environment to inspire youth to learn more about protecting native species and ecology in The Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line sponsors and provides guidance for summer eco-camps in ports of call across The Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, Disney invites U.S. Forest Rangers to sail onboard each of our Alaskan voyages in order to offer lectures, host special children’s activities and engage guests in ways that ultimately create a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local environment and wildlife.

Cars Land, Carthay Circle, Aulani Amongst 2013 Thea Award Recipients
The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) today announced the recipients of its annual Thea Awards during the IAAPA Attractions Expo. The prestigious Thea Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in the creation of compelling experiences and places. TEA serves the global attractions industry, including theme parks, museums, world expos, heritage centers and resorts.
Among the named recipients is a triple-threat from the newly revamped Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort. In addition to the Cars Land themed area itself, Radiator Springs Racers and the Carthay Circle Restaurant located on Buena Vista Street are recipients of TEA’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement.
Radiator Springs Racers is being recognized for demonstrating ‘true excellence in design, technical innovation and in execution… the animated figures break new ground in creating the illusion of live animation, and the technical elements, including special effects, sophisticated, in-vehicle sound, and a sophisticated ride system, have all been transparently integrated into the highly enjoyable story and experience. In addition, the design team incorporated an extremely large attraction footprint into the plan of the overall Cars Land footprint in a way that creates multiple notable scenic vistas, and overlooks and seamlessly intertwines the environment and attraction into a total experience greater than the sum of its parts.’ TEA refers to RSR’s home, Cars Land, as ‘a destination attraction in and of itself. The sensitive layout, sophisticated use of scale, extension of character details and the high quality of execution combine to make this an outstanding example of experiential design.’ TEA also hails Carthay Circle Restaurant as ‘a truly outstanding achievement in a theme park,’ citing its ambiance and quality of food.
Also being recognized is Disney’s Aulani Resort, which the TEA defines as ‘an exceptionally cohesive, immersive and entertaining resort experience. Interlaced throughout the entire resort are many layers and references to native Hawaiian culture, both traditional and contemporary, including murals and music commissioned for the resort that successfully unites families in a shared experience of pure Hawaii. Mickey himself is seen on site as only another of many tourists enjoying the educational and entertaining offerings at Aulani.’
The Buzz Price Award, formerly known as the lifetime achievement reward, also underscores Disney’s history as it is being awarded to Frank Stanek. Stanek’s career reaches back into the 1960s when he served as part of the team that brought “it’s a small world” to life at the 1964-65 World’s Fair. His most notable project for the company would be the development of the Tokyo Disneyland Resort, but his hands reached much further inside and outside of Disney, notably also at Universal. Marty Sklar has this to say about Stanek: ‘Frank is one of those “unsung talents” who make our projects happen – much as Buzz Price did from the beginning of the industry. Perhaps no one has had more impact on the two biggest players in our business – Disney and Universal – than Frank Stanek has had – especially in the growth and development of the industry in the international marketplace.’
The Thea Awards will be formally presented on April 6, 2013 at the 19th Annual Thea Awards Gala, a ticketed, black-tie dinner affair, open to the public, at the Disneyland Resort. For more information on these and other recipients, see TEA’s full list here.
