‘Newsies,’ ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ Make Headlines Catching 17 Tony Nominations
Disney’s limited Broadway run of its new musical ‘Newsies’ (based on the film) racked up an impressive eight Tony Award nominations including ‘Best Musical.’ The announcement was made earlier today by Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons during the annual nominations ceremony.
For the coveted title of ‘Best Musical,’ ‘Newsies’ will be competing against ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It,’ ‘Once’ and ‘Leap of Faith,’ with the latter two also having been based on films. ‘Leap’ and ‘Newsies’ also share the music composition talents of Alan Menken.
Other categories for which ‘Newsies’ received a Tony nod are: Best Book of a Musical (Harvey Fierstein), Best Original Score (Alan Menken, Jack Feldman), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Jeremy Jordan), Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun), Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli), Best Orchestrations (Danny Troob) and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel).
Although not a Disney Theatrical production, ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ was developed by the company and based on the popular series of Peter Pan prequels by authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, also published by Disney. The play bested ‘Newsies’ by just one nomination including ‘Best Play,’ where it competes with ‘Clybourne Park,’ ‘Other Desert Cities’ and ‘Venus in Fur.’ Other nominations for the play include: Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) (Wayne Barker and Rick Elice), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play (Christian Borle), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play (Celia Keenan-Bolger), Best Direction of a Play (Roger Rees and Alex Timbers), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Donyale Werle), Best Costume Design of a Play (Paloma Young), Best Lighting Design of a Play (Jeff Croiter), Best Sound Design of a Play
(Darron L. West).
The Tony Awards will air live June 10 at 8 pm ET on the CBS Network.

Disney World Chef Named as James Beard Nominee for Sixth Consecutive Year
For the sixth year in a row, The James Beard Foundation has named Chef Scott Hunnel of Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa as a finalist on its annual list of top chefs in the country.
Nominated for the prestigious “Best Chef: South” award, Chef Hunnel is familiar with earning recognition as one of the nation’s best. He also received nominations from the Foundation in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
“The amazing creativity of Chef Scott Hunnel helps make Victoria & Albert’s restaurant in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa an unparalleled experience for our Guests,” said Norm Noble, general manager of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. “For 12 consecutive years, Victoria & Albert’s has been the recipient of the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award, celebrated the world over thanks to Chef Hunnel’s exquisite culinary creations. Scott’s nomination in the prestigious James Beard Awards for ‘Best Chef: South’ is well deserved.”
Chef Hunnel finds great joy in delivering a ”wow” factor with his culinary creations. He enjoys taking gastronomic journeys around the world for inspiration and ideas. In recent years, his search has taken him to the kitchen of George V in Paris, truffle hunting in Italy, and to markets and restaurants in Hong Kong, Bangkok and London.
“To me, the James Beard recognition is such an honor because the nomination comes from your peers,” said Hunnel. “There are so many talented chefs out there and to be nominated by them is very special.”
Chef Hunnel takes a refreshingly contemporary approach in the kitchen, with a straightforward cooking philosophy: fresh, seasonal ingredients from around the globe with a focus on local markets including seaports in Florida and area farms.
The James Beard Foundation Awards recognize culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their fields and emphasize the Foundation’s mission – celebrate, preserve, and nurture America’s culinary heritage and diversity. Each year, the Foundation holds an online open call for entries beginning in mid-October.
This year, more than 57,000 entries were received. Semifinalists in 19 awards categories are determined by a governing committee and placed on a nominating ballot sent to more than 550 judges across the country.
Winners will be announced in May during a gala in New York City.

Oscars: Pixar Down but Not Out, ‘Muppets’ Strike a (Con)Chord; DreamWorks Disney’s Savior
Nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced earlier today by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence in Hollywood, California. In regards to Disney films’ performances in the main category, there were, unfortunately, little surprises, but it’s unfortunate to report that even in the technical categories, Disney failed to shine. DreamWorks — whom Disney markets and distributes films for, much as they once did for Pixar Animation Studios — shines across the board, however, in particular for the Steven Spielberg epic War Horse.
It should come as no surprise that Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2 failed to make the cut, despite that two of the nominees (both from DreamWorks Animation — no relation) are essentially sequels as well: Kung Fu Panda 2 and the Shrek-spinoff, Puss in Boots. There is hope for the animation house, however, as the gem of a short film, La Luna from Enrico Casarosa has been nominated in the Short Film (Animated) category. While the short has some stiff competition, a win would certainly be a boon for both Pixar and Disney who can use the win to help promote Brave, for which La Luna serves as the opener (not that being Oscar nominated is a bad runner-up prize itself).
Perhaps the biggest surprise is not who was nominated for the Original Song category, but that only two nominees were selected. Bret McKenzie’s ‘Man or Muppet’ Disney’s The Muppets shares that distinction with another animated film, ‘Real in Rio’ from Rio.
For DreamWorks, the acclaimed film The Help received a nod for Best Picture as well as Actress in a Leading Role (Viola Davis) and Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer).
War Horse led the battle with several nominations including Best Picture along with Original Score (John Williams), Art Direction (Production Design: Anne Seibel; Set Decoration: Hélène Dubreuil), Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Sound Editing (Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom) and Sound Mixing (Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson and Stuart Wilson).
Even Real Steel picked up a nomination in the Visual Effects category (Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor and Swen Gillberg), which Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides had been shortlisted, but didn’t make the cut.
The 84th annual Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
Photos: Disneyland Honors 55-Year Park Veteran Martinez with First-of-its-Kind Award
Yesterday, Oscar Martinez celebrated 55 years as a cast member at the Disneyland Resort. Martinez started his career at the park in 1956 as a bus boy and today serves as a cook at the Carnation Cafe on Main Street, USA. Throughout his service at the resort, Martinez has trained thousands of cast members and has become a favorite of many guests who visit him year after year.
Martinez is the first Walt Disney Parks & Resorts cast member to achieve this 55-year milestone and, as such, he became the first to receive the newly created 55-year Snow White-themed service award which was bestowed upon him in a ceremony held earlier at the resort.

‘Muppets,’ ‘Gnomeo,’ ‘Pooh’ Among Films Shortlisted for Original Song Oscar
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 39 songs from eligible motion pictures have been shortlisted to be considered for nominees as Original Song fr the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Nine of the selected songs, which represents about 25% of the total list, come directly from Disney films. The number becomes even more impressive if you consider that two of the other shortlisted songs are affiliated with The Walt Disney Company: Star Spangled Man’ from Captain America: The First Avenger, which of course is a property of Disney’s own Marvel, and ‘The Living Proof’ from The Help, a DreamWorks film which was marketed and distributed by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures.
Disney’s potential nominees are: ‘The World I Knew’ (Disneynature’s African Cats); ‘Collision of Worlds’ (Disney/Pixar’s Cars); ‘Hello Hello’ and ‘Love Builds a Garden’ (Touchstone Pictures’ Gnomeo & Juliet); ‘Life’s a Happy Song,’ ‘Man or Muppet’ and ‘Pictures in My Head’ (Disney’s The Muppets); ‘The Backson Song’ and ‘So Long’ (Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Winnie the Pooh).
On Thursday, January 5, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting. If no song receives an average score of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees in the category. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve that score, they shall be the nominees. A DVD copy of the song clips will be made available to those branch members who are unable to attend the screening and who request it for home viewing. A mail-in ballot will be provided.
Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. If more than two songs from a film achieve a score of 8.25 or more, the two songs with the highest scores will be the nominees.
To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 am PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.
Disney Pushes Five Films, One Short for Award Consideration in 2011
Although only a handful of ‘For Your Consideration’ ads have popped up from Walt Disney Studios in the industry trades — and those namely for Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2 and Winnie the Pooh — the studio has updated its awards consideration site to invite organizations to take a closer look at five of its feature-length films released this past year, along with one of its shorts.
Most of the attention seems to be focused on Cars 2 in which the Studios is suggesting the following considerations: Best Animated Feature (John Lasseter), Best Director (John Lasseter), Best Adapted Screenplay (Story by John Lasseter, Brad Lewis, Dan Fogelman; Screenplay by Ben Queen), Best Film Editing (Stephen Schaffer, A.C.E.), Best Art Direction (Harley Jessup), Best Cinematography (Sharon Calahan, Jeremy Lasky), Best Visual Effects (Apurva Shah, Gary Bruins), Best Sound Mixing (Michael Semanick, Tom Myers, Vince Caro), Best Sound Editing (Tom Myers, Michael Silvers), Best Original Song (‘Collision of Worlds’ by Brad Paisley and Robbie Williams) and Best Original Score (Michael Giacchino).
The site also makes several downloads available from the film including concept art, behind-the-scenes images, ‘Collision of Worlds’ and the Cars 2 screenplay in PDF format.
For Gnomeo & Juliet from Touchstone Pictures, the Studios is pushing for Best Animated Feature (Kelly Asbury) and Best Original Song for both ‘Hello Hello’ by Elton John and Bernie Taupin as performed by Elton John and Lada Gaga and ‘Love Builds a Garden’ by Elton John and Bernie Taupin as performed by Elton John. Both songs are available to listen to online in their entirety.
For its newest release, The Muppets, Disney is pushing for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Original Song for the following: ‘Life’s A Happy Song’ and ‘Man Or Muppet’ by Bret McKenzie and ‘Pictures In My Head’ by Jeannie Lurie, Aris Archontis and Chen Neeman. All three songs are available online in their entirety.
For Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, the Studio would like to see nominations for the following categories: Best Picture (Jerry Bruckheimer), Best Director (Rob Marshall), Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio), Best Actor (Johnny Depp), Best Actress (Penelope Cruz), Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane), Best Cinematography (Dariusz Wolski, A.S.C.), Best Art Direction (John Myhre, Gordon Sim), Best Film Editing (David Brenner, A.C.E., Wyatt Smith), Best Sound Mixing (Lee Orloff, Paul Massey, Christopher Boyes), Best Sound Editing (George Watters II, Shannon Mills), Best Costume Design (Penny Rose), Best Makeup (Joel Harlow, Peter Swords King) and Best Visual Effects (Charles Gibson, Ben Snow, Gary Brozenich, Mark Hawker).
For Winnie the Pooh, suggested categories include Best Animated Feature (Stephen Anderson, Don Hall), Best Original Score (Henry Jackman) and Best Original Song for ‘The Backson Song’ written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez as performed by Craig Ferguson et al and ‘So Long’ written by Zooey Deschanel as performed by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward.
Finally, for Best Animated Short (Enrico Casarosa) comes La Luna from Pixar Animation Studios. The film’s section features quite a few stills as well as concept art and behind-the-scenes images.
Disney, Pixar, ‘Star Tours’ Among Nominees for 2011 Annie Awards
The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, today announced its nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards, recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation.
Pixar Animation Studios finds itself competing for the top honors in the categories for Best Animated Feature, with Cars 2 and La Luna for Best Animated Short Subject. Interestingly enough, although La Luna won’t be formally released until it opens with Brave in 2012, it has been screened enough to satisfy requirements for many awards including the Annie and the Oscar (for which it has been shortlisted for a nod). This means that it’s also competing against The Ballad of Nessie from Walt Disney Animation Studios, which played before Winnie the Pooh (which does not find itself nominated).
Other films competing for Best Animated Feature are: A Cat in Paris (Folimage); Arrugas (Wrinkles) (Perro Verde Films, S.L.); Arthur Christmas (Sony Pictures Animation, Aardman Animations); Chico & Rita (Chico & Rita Distribution Limited); Kung Fu Panda 2 (DreamWorks Animation); Puss In Boots (DreamWorks Animation); Rango (Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies present A Blind Wink/GK Films Production); Rio (Blue Sky Studios); and Tintin (Amblin Entertainment, Wingnut Films and Kennedy/Marshall).
Walt Disney Animation Studios picked up another nomination in the category of Best General Audience Animated TV Production with its ‘Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice’ special. Disney Television Animation is nominated for Best Animated Television Production (Preschool) for ‘Jake and the Neverland Pirates’ and ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’ which are competing against Disney Junior colleague ‘Chuggington’ from Ludorum Pictures.

The Walt Disney Company returns its support for the Annies this year after calling for a boycott last year in which they refused to sponsor or submit any films because of a dispute over the voting process. Disney claimed the voting body (for which the only requirement is membership, available to virtually anyone) was heavily biased towards DreamWorks Animation which makes it a practice to purchase memberships for each of its employees. In response, the International Animated Film Society nominated Disney films anyway and realized Disney’s likely fear that How To Train Your Dragon would take best picture over Toy Story 3, which it did. After some promised changes by the industry group, Disney has returned to support the awards this year with Disney Toon Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios all listed individually as Silver Sponsors.
The 2011 Annie Award winners will be announced at the 39th Annual Annie Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, CA. For a complete list of Annie Award nominations, ticket and event information, visit www.annieawards.org.
