Cal Ripken Jr. Signs Middle Grade Book Deal with Disney Book Group
Disney Book Group will publish a middle-grade baseball series written by National Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and co-authored by Baltimore Sun sportswriter Kevin Cowherd. The series will feature characters from a Babe Ruth League team named the “Orioles”. The agreement for world rights was negotiated by Stephanie Owens Lurie, Editorial Director, Disney-Hyperion, an imprint of Disney Book Group, and Ian Kleinert, of Objective Entertainment.
The first book in the series—Hothead—will be published in Winter 2011 under the Disney-Hyperion imprint. It centers on all-star third baseman Connor Sullivan, who has a big problem: his temper. The story was inspired by Cal’s own struggle with frustration as a young player. Additional books will follow every year.
“Working with Kevin and the team from Disney has been a pleasure,” said Ripken. “Connor is a character that I was able to help develop with Kevin based on my experiences as a kid who struggled with his emotions. I hope that the kids reading it find it to be fun and take away a few lessons from it.”
“Cal Ripken Jr. is a living legend, of course, and in his work with kids he has demonstrated a commitment to being a positive influence,” says Lurie. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to share Cal’s love of baseball and his can-do outlook with young readers.”
Cal Ripken, Jr. was a shortstop and third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles for his entire career (1981-2001), a rare occurrence in Major League Baseball today. Nicknamed “The Iron Man” for his relentless work ethic and reliability on the field, Ripken is most remembered for playing in 2,632 straight games over 17 seasons, shattering New York Yankee Lou Gehrig’s previous record of 2,130 games. He was also a 19-time all-star and is considered to be one of the best shortstops that professional baseball has ever seen. In 2007, when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, he received the most votes in the history of the Hall of Fame. Since his retirement Ripken has worked as President and CEO of Ripken Baseball, Inc. to nurture the love of baseball in young children on a grassroots level. In August of 2007 Ripken was named American Public Diplomacy Envoy and has since been traveling the world to bring baseball to people everywhere. He currently lives in Maryland with his wife and two children.
Kevin Cowherd has been a writer for the Baltimore Sun since 1987, is nationally syndicated by the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post news service, and is the author of Last Call at the 7-Eleven, a book of selected writings published by Bancroft Press. In 1990 he was honored by the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors for excellence in feature writing. He currently writes a sports column and blog for the Baltimore Sun. As a sportswriter he is curious about athletes’ private thoughts and emotions. He is also a humorist, and an experienced Little League coach. He lives with his wife and three children near Baltimore.

MLB-Themed Mickey Statues Now Appearing Throughout Southern California; Scavenger Hunt to Award All-Star Game Tix
Beginning today, Major League Baseball Properties and Disney Consumer Products are populating key locations throughout Southern California with thirty-six varieties of life-sized MLB-themed Mickey Mouse statues in celebration of the 2010 MLB All-Star Week festivities taking place July 9th – 13th in Anaheim, Calif. As part of the previously announced new collaboration between the organizations, the statues are being placed in high-profile areas throughout Anaheim, Los Angeles, and surrounding areas in Southern California, including Angel Stadium, Anaheim City Hall, Downtown Disney, the Kodak and El Capitan Theatres, L.A. Live and the Hollywood Walk of Fame area. All 36 statues will be in place by the end of next week and will stay through the All-Star Game on July 13th on FOX.
The 36 life-size statues, commissioned in conjunction with MLB licensee Forever Collectibles, are uniquely decorated with bold graphics featuring each of the 30 MLB Clubs as well as four All-Star designs, an American League and a National League design. Each life-sized statue is 7.5 feet in height and weighs 989 pounds.
MLB and Disney Consumer Products will launch on June 11th a Find Mickey Scavenger Hunt, which rewards people for visiting the different statue locations and being the first to find and tweet a photo with the life sized MLB Mickey Mouse statues. Also, the first person to take a photo in front of all 36 statues and tweet a link to their photo gallery will win the grand prize of two tickets to the MLB All-Star Game on July 13th in Anaheim. There will be thirty-six winners in total and one grand prize winner. For a complete list of rules, hash-tags and instructions on how to participate, see www.mlb.com/mickeymouse, and for updates on the scavenger hunt, follow @AllStarGame and @DisneyLiving on Twitter.
“Major League Baseball is excited to bring the 2010 All-Star Game to Anaheim and we want fans all throughout Southern California to feel like they are a part of the entire experience,” said Howard Smith, Senior Vice President, Licensing, Major League Baseball. “As an iconic figure, Mickey Mouse is the ideal ambassador to connect fans with the premiere sporting event of the summer.”
“When the original Disneyland opened in Anaheim in 1955, Walt Disney’s cartoon characters came to life not just on Main Street, but throughout the world,” said City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. “Mickey Mouse just may be the most popular and most photographed All-Star this summer!”
Unveiled last month, miniature versions of each of the statues are available in a 7.5-inch size through MLB.com and DisneyStore.com, as well as additional retailers including MLB stadium shops, Walgreens and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Photos of all variations are available at MLBPressBox.com and DisneyConsumerProducts.com. In addition to the statuettes, fans can also obtain a wide variety of merchandise and apparel featuring Major League Baseball and beloved Disney characters, including caps, t-shirts, sweatshirts, drink ware, pins, throws and beach towels in time for the All-Star Game.

Disneyland to Play Host to MLB’s All-Star Red Carpet Parade on July 13
Major League Baseball announced today that on July 13, the Disneyland Resort will welcome the MLB All-Star Red Carpet procession into the Disneyland Park.
An approximately 6,000-square-yard red carpet stretching three-quarters of a mile from the corner of South Harbor Boulevard at Convention Way to Disney Way, where the public portion concludes, will feature professional baseball players from the 81st annual MLB All-Star Game, their families and members of the coaching staffs. The parade then will continue through Disneyland to Main Street U.S.A. for guests in the park.
The event is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT and is expected to feature all of the MLB All-Stars and the All-Star managers, all riding in Chevrolet Silverados. It has become the traditional way that players get to the ballpark for the Midsummer Classic, ever since the first such parade outside Comerica Park in Detroit in 2005. MLB Network will telecast the event nationally at 4 p.m. ET and air an abbreviated version at 7:30 p.m. ET.
“The All-Star Game Red Carpet Show presented by Chevy gives fans the opportunity to see their favorite MLB stars in a unique way and brings fans closer to the game,” said Tim Brosnan, executive vice president, business, for MLB. “In addition to the people of Anaheim, we are thrilled to bring the event into the Disneyland Resort to share this celebration of Major League Baseball with their guests from across America and around the world.”
“Disneyland Resort is thrilled to participate in the MLB All-Star Game festivities, and help shine the spotlight on the entire Anaheim Resort Area,” said George Kalogridis, president of Disneyland Resort. “With the Midsummer Classic here in our own backyard, I can’t imagine a more perfect All-Star Game parade route than one that concludes on Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland park and allows our guests to join in the celebration.”
The 81st Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and Le Reseau de Sport, and around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pregame ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m. ET. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Game coverage.
