Classic Disney Comics, Marvel Superheroes and Disney Afternoon Among 2011 ‘Free Comic Book Day’ Offerings
Each year, the first Saturday in May marks Free Comic Book Day, an opportunity for new and experienced comic book readers to enjoy special, free editions of comics across all genres from many participating publishers and comic book shops across the globe.
This year includes the following Disney and Marvel titles from Marvel, BOOM! Studios and Fantagraphics. Clicking on the comic book image or title will take you to the comic’s respective page on the official Free Comic Book Day site where you’ll even have an opportunity to preview the comic online.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (MARVEL COMICS)
This first week of May award-winning Spider-Man writer Dan Slott and comics legend Humberto Ramos give you first, fateful glimpses at the biggest Spider-Man epic in years (coming later this summer)! It’s a crime that we’re giving this one away!
The new MADAME WEB can sense a great conflict brewing in SPIDER-MAN’S future and his only hope for survival lies in the hands of SHANG-CHI, THE MASTER OF KUNG FU! Can Spidey gain mastery of the martial arts in time to stop a deadly foe from his past? Watch out, True Believers, ’cause this is the issue that changes up Spider-Man like never before!
CAPTAIN AMERICA THOR (MARVEL COMICS)
From the fan-favorite creative team of Thor: The Mighty Avenger comes a time-twisting tale of Camelot-craziness. When mischievous Loki’s machinations throw Thor and a World War II-era Steve Rogers into King Arthur’s court, it’s an adventure neither noble Avenger will ever forget!
DARKWING DUCK & CHIP DALE RESCUE RANGERS (BOOM! STUDIOS/BOOM KIDS!)
An all ages flip book from BOOM! On one side, experience Darkwing Duck! Reprinting the blockbuster sold-out first issue of the Darkwing Duck ongoing series. But don’t forget to flip this comic over, or you’ll miss Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, reprinting the first issue of the critically acclaimed bestseller from BOOM! Two hit series, both all ages, one flip book of pure fun! Don’t miss the return of the Disney Afternoon Revolution that grabbed the attention of Disney fans everywhere!
WALT DISNEY MICKEY MOUSE (FANTAGRAPHICS)
Today everyone knows Mickey Mouse as the cheerful ambassador of all things Disney. But back in the 1930′s, Mickey gained fame as a rough-and-tumble, two-fisted epic hero – an adventurous scrapper matching wits with mobsters, kidnappers, spies, and even (gulp!) city slickers! And Mickey’s greatest feats of derring-do took place in his daily comic strip, written and drawn by one of the greatest cartoonists of the 20th century – Floyd Gottfredson.
Of course there are plenty more titles that will be available outside of the world of Disney. To see those, obtain more information about them and Free Comic Book Day as well as find a participating comic book store near you, visit the official site.

In just a few short years, BOOM! Studios has already had enormous successes with adapting many Disney and Pixar favorites to comic format, most recently with the Disney Afternoon cult classic Darkwing Duck.

Mickey Comics Get a BOOM! as Gemstone Gets the Boot
As we reported back in February from the New York Comic-Con’s panel with Disney Publishing Worldwide, Gemstone got a poor reception from the audience who felt that the publishing house wasn’t giving Mickey and pals the comic presence they richly deserved. To the panel’s credit, Disney’s response was fair and ambiguous: as long as the relationship was mutually good, it would stay.
Shortly after that, word that Gemstone was losing the franchise starting to spread and Gemstone published a notice on their website stating that the economy has forced them to make cuts which placed the Disney comics in limbo.
Today we get word courtesy of Newsarama that BOOM! Studios has picked up the rights to publish the Disney comics going forward. BOOM!, which has since created the Boom Kids line to handle its incredibly well-received publications based on the Pixar and Muppets properties.
While BOOM! has obtained the rights to re-print the older comics, they will be introducing all new comics featuring Mickey and pals, beginning in September with Disney’s Comics and Stories #699 and Mickey Mouse and Friends #297. BOOM! maintains they do have plans for the classic strips as well.
Another property talked about during the NYCC09 panel was the Disney Classics characters getting comic books as well. With this sort of momentum and success, there’s little doubt that BOOM! may soon be offering comics based on properties such as The Little Mermaid as well.
Courtesy of the Newsarama article, here’s a summary of the first new issue of Mickey Mouse and Friends:
One of the longest-lived, most-successful comic book series in the industry’s history comes to BOOM! and brings a little magic — presenting Wizards of Mickey! Student of the great wizard Grandalf, Mickey Mouse hails from the humble village of Miceland. Allying himself with Donald Duck and his pet dragon named Fafnir, and team mate Goofy, Mickey’s come to the great tournament to get his revenge on Peg Leg Pete, who has stolen the Rain Crystal from Miceland! Join Mickey Mouse and his friends on an epic tale of magic and wonder!
