Disney at San Diego Comic-Con, Day Two: Disney Animation Panel
Also led by Patton Oswalt, the Disney Animation Panel brought together several of the directors from Walt Disney Animation, Disney/Pixar and even Japan’s legendary animated filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.
A lot of the focus of the panel appears to have been on Ponyo and the upcoming Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D double-feature and – of course – Toy Story 3.
Attendees were shown clips from Toy Story 2 in 3D as well as a preview of Prep & Landing, the first television special produced for ABC by Walt Disney Animation Studios, coming later this year.
Some of the big news for Toy Story 3 was that Barbie, having a larger role in the film, will be accompanied by estranged partner Ken who will be voiced by Michael Keaton.
While it had already been announced that Beauty and the Beast would be re-released in 3D format for Valentine’s Day, 2010, attendees were treated to a scene from the film.
John Musker and Ron Clements, co-directors of The Princess and the Frog were on hand to introduce a scene from their upcoming film. To coincide with this, Disney has also released this special footage showing some pencil-test animation from the film:
And for the grand finale, John Lasseter introduced Hayao Miyazaki to the crowd to talk about the upcoming United States release of his own spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Ponyo.

The panel (L-R): Ron Clements and John Musker (the Princess and the Frog), Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo), John Lasseter, Kirk Wise (Beauty and the Beast), Lee Unkrich (Toy Stoy 3)

Disney at San Diego Comic-Con, Day Two: Inside Flynn’s Arcade, Home of Tron
In celebration of Tron Legacy, Walt Disney Studios has re-created Flynn’s Arcade off-site in San Diego, complete with ’80s arcade classics and a few other surprises. The campaign started off when Disney mailed tokens to Flynn’s Arcade to attendees with a coded message to visit the site Flynn Lives, a site purported to have been created by a group of unknowns who have followed the disappearance of Kevin Flynn some 27 years ago, claiming him to still be alive. The site gave the message to its visitors to go to a specific location in San Diego at a specific time and there attendees found themselves inside Flynn’s Arcade.
Standing alone in the back of the arcade was the game Tron itself, with an added surprise. The brick wall behind the game opened up to reveal an actual full-size light cycle on a revolving table.
Below is a photo gallery highlighting the arcade along with the cast and crew of Tron Legacy. All photos are © Eric Charbonneau/Le Studio/Wireimage and are provided courtesy of Walt Disney Studios.
