Characters in Flight

Located in the West Side of the Downtown Disney District at the Walt Disney World Resort, Aerophile’s ‘Characters in Flight‘ balloon takes guests hundreds of feet into the air via a tethered helium-filled balloon, offering a panoramic view of the parks and its surrounding areas.

For a limited time, Groupon is offering future Walt Disney World guests the opportunity to experience the balloon ride at a savings of up to 44%. Guests can purchase a ride for one person for just $11 (regular price $18 per adult) or two people for $20 (regular price $36 for two adults). In addition, guests may purchase up to 10 Groupons, but only 1 may be used per visit. The Groupon will expire on May 31, 2013.

Five Reasons I Absolutely, Positively Won’t be Riding Characters in Flight (Maybe)

As photos and video of experiences on Downtown Disney’s newest venture emerge onto the interwebs, I started to see a sharp decline in my own personal enthusiasm for being able to experience the 400 foot flight on a tethered balloon myself. I kid you not, I was very excited at the proposition – initially. Despite the $16 price tag, I was all set to ride this thing 10x minimum: sunrise, sunset and everything in-between. Downtown Disney’s ‘Characters in Flight’ Scheduled for Soft Opening Friday, April 10

Characters In FlightThe fun soars to new heights at Downtown Disney West Side with an iconic new tethered balloon that takes guests on ascents of up to 400 feet above the waterfront.

Characters In Flight operated by Aerophile is a 72-foot-diameter balloon with a whimsical design featuring silhouettes of a dozen of Disney’s “flying characters” – such as Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and Dumbo. The vibrantly colored balloon can lift up to 30 guests at a time on a six-minute trip – thanks to its enclosed volume of 210,000 cubic feet of lighter-than-air gas. The ascents, by day or night, provide guests with an unparalleled, 360-degree view of up to 10 miles.

Guests board a gondola beneath the 105-foot-high balloon from a landing platform on Village Lake at the end of the main promenade at Downtown Disney West Side. Riders can catch flights seven days a week. Hours Sunday-Thursday are 10:30 a.m.-11 p.m. while ascents Friday-Saturday are 10:30 a.m.-midnight. Tickets ($16 for ages 10-up and $10 for ages 3-9) can be purchased on site. Availability is on first-come, first-serve basis.

A soft opening is scheduled to begin Friday, April 9 as per the Walt Disney World resort.

Characters in Flight Tethered Hot Air Balloon Flight at Downtown Disney

Characters in Flight BalloonUP, UP AND AWAY — Guests will get a bird’s-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort as they soar to new heights in a whimsical attraction that recently opened at Downtown Disney. Characters in Flight, operated by Aerophile, is a giant tethered balloon that ascends some 300 feet into the sky every 10 minutes (depending on weather).
