The 128-page graphic novel, a full-color action-adventure anthology featuring six original stories, is a prequel to “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” the feature film to be released by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films on May 28, 2010. The Prince of Persia graphic novel anthology will publish in April 2010 simultaneously in hardcover and paperback with a 125,000 first print run.

“We are thrilled to publish Jordan Mechner’s book debut,” said Jon Yaged, vice president, U.S. publisher, Disney Book Group. “We have developed a fantastic publishing program for the Prince of Persia film release and this graphic novel is an incredible cornerstone.”

At San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 24, 2009 Jordan Mechner, Todd McFarlane, Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards, and Cameron Stewart will discuss the Prince of Persia graphic novel anthology for the first time at Disney Press’s panel (11:30am-12:30pm, room 3) at the San Diego Convention Center.

Jordan Mechner
Jordan Mechner is one of the videogame industry’s most respected creators. His titles, including Prince of Persia, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Karateka and The Last Express appear frequently in critics’ lists of the best games of all time.

Mechner’s achievements in the videogame field are complemented by his work as a film writer and director. His documentary “Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story” won the 2003 IDA award for Best Short Documentary, was shortlisted for an Academy Award®, and received its broadcast premiere on PBS Independent Lens in 2005.

Among his current projects, Mechner wrote the screen story and is an executive producer of the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films feature film “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Mechner recently signed on to write the feature film adaptation of the comic book Fathom for 20th Century Fox, which is set to star Megan Fox.

Mechner is currently collaborating with artists LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland on an original graphic novel trilogy for First Second Books.

Mechner received his B.A. from Yale University.

Richard McWilliam, Upper Deck Chairman/CEO said, “Gareb and I have been friends for many years now, and I’m happy to see him once again back in Southern California. On behalf of myself and Upper Deck, we congratulate Gareb for bringing the fans here another great Comic-Con.”

Upper Deck recently announced a licensing agreement with Marvel Entertainment to create products based on Marvel characters, including Trading Cards, TCGs and Miniatures Games.

Anaheim will be the fifth Comic-Con city for shows produced by Gareb Shamus, joining Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and the recently-purchased Toronto event. Attendees can anticipate the strong caliber lineup of stars and exhibitors that fans across the nation have come to expect.

“We had an outpouring of requests by fans and partners to return to Southern California, and felt that Anaheim was the best place to come back to,” said Shamus. “There is a real desire here for a comic based pop-culture experience, and I feel privileged to get back in touch with our west coast fans in this way. The Comic-Con ’09 Exclusive Hardcovers of THE MUPPET SHOW COMIC BOOK, THE INCREDIBLES: FAMILY MATTERS and CARS: THE ROOKIE will be limited to 250 copies, serially numbered, and contain all four issues of each respective series presented in hardcover for the first time with unique, never-to-be-repeated covers.

All three titles comprise the premiere books of BOOM! Studios recently launched “BOOM! Kids” imprint. BOOM! Kids serves as a child-appropriate home for BOOM!’s kid-friendly publishing content. Shortly after that, word that Gemstone was losing the franchise starting to spread and Gemstone published a notice on their website stating that the economy has forced them to make cuts which placed the Disney comics in limbo.

Today we get word courtesy of Newsarama that BOOM! Studios has picked up the rights to publish the Disney comics going forward. BOOM!, which has since created the Boom Kids line to handle its incredibly well-received publications based on the Pixar and Muppets properties.

While BOOM! has obtained the rights to re-print the older comics, they will be introducing all new comics featuring Mickey and pals, beginning in September with Disney’s Comics and Stories #699 and Mickey Mouse and Friends #297. BOOM! maintains they do have plans for the classic strips as well.

Another property talked about during the NYCC09 panel was the Disney Classics characters getting comic books as well. With this sort of momentum and success, there’s little doubt that BOOM! may soon be offering comics based on properties such as The Little Mermaid as well.

Kids line of Muppet and Disney/Pixar comics will be available to their customers starting immediately! Newsstand editions of THE MUPPET SHOW COMIC BOOK, THE INCREDIBLES: FAMILY MATTERS, CARS: THE ROOKIE and all forthcoming Muppet and Disney/Pixar comics will be hitting the shelves each Wednesday as new comics are released!

Disney/Pixar's CARS Comic Book from BOOM! Studios

The first Saturday in May marks the annual Free Comic Book Day in which comic book retailers all across North America (and even the world) offer select comic books for free.

One of the offerings this year will be a special edition of The World of Cars #1 from BOOM! Studios. In addition to Cars, BOOM! works hand in hand with Disney and Pixar to produce comics based on The Incredibles, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., the Muppets and more.

The FCBD edition features an excerpt from the #1 issue which reveals
the origins of America’s favorite racer, Lightning McQueen. You’ll also find never-before-seen sketches, character designs and script pages.

For those near Round Rock, Texas, The World of Cars writer Alan Porter Jr will be making an appearance from 11 am – 1 pm.

Featuring Disney’s characters, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, the 32-page comic book will be priced at Rs 25. Roshini Bakshi, regional director, Disney Consumer Products said, “Every month, we will print 50,000 copies for each character and launch 2 titles under Mickey and Donald respectively per month.” Disney is gunning to reach 10,000 points-of-interest within the first month of launch.

Disney also plans to launch comic books on its proprietary character of Princess, which includes titles such as Snowhite & Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella among others. “While we are not producing content from India, we won’t rule out the possibility in near future to localise the comics’ content for our readers,” said Bakshi. Also on the cards are comic books in regional languages for the south India market.

Disney Publishing Worldwide, which publishes 274 million copies of children’s magazines worldwide, sells nearly 120 million children’s books annually. Bakshi said, “Our internal research tells us that kids aged between 6 and 14 years are receptive to reading comic books provided the content is engaging enough.” Diamond comics, who also publish four monthly magazines, will distribute the comics to leading bookstores in time for the April school holidays.

The New York-based Disney Publishing has over 340 regular titles available in more than 80 countries around the globe.

She then began talking about BOOM! Studios and their new Pixar and Muppet projects (see coverage of the BOOM! Studios panel here). She breezed through the Pixar properties saying not much more than the stories will originate completely from within BOOM! Studios with approval from both Pixar and Disney. She did spend a little more time on the Muppet side of things noting that in addition to the Muppet Robin Hood shown at the BOOM! Studios panel, there will be additional series based on public domain stories such as Muppet King Arthur and Muppet Peter Pan (the Muppet Wiki also additionally cites stories such as the Three Musketeers, Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming). She did speak highly of BOOM! (as they did of Disney and Pixar), and especially of Roger Langridge who she said is solely responsible for the Muppet Show comics (in that he wrote, drew, lettered and colored the first issue). She mentioned that she had seen the first comic just the day before the panel and described it as absolutely hilarious. Langridge had also created several Muppet comics for the defunct Disney Adventures magazine but they never made it in prior to the magazine folding.

The focus then switched to Christian Trimmer, an editor at Disney Hyperion. Trimmer related how Disney Hyperion’s books relate to the comics market in that they are producing graphic novel adapations of several children’s books as well as the children’s books themselves.
