Yesterday, both Lucasfilm and Disney registered a series of domain names, clearly pointing to a couple of large projects we can possibly expect to learn more about in the coming months, if not much sooner.
Yesterday, Stitch Kingdom was invited to preview Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story, an upcoming webseries produced by Disney Interactive. The following is a recap of the event — which included an advanced viewing of the webseries as well as a behind-the-scenes look at its creation — courtesy of Kiki Levin.
It’s not often you’d imagine members of the Walt Disney Company dumpster-diving for set pieces, but that’s exactly what happened during the production of Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story. Conceived and created by the Disney Interactive team in Burbank, the stop-motion animation was made on a shoe-string budget (hence the dumpster-diving) but radiates the high production values and heart-warming storylines Disney fans have come to know and love.
Only one of three Disney characters to have a recognized birthday (co-star Minnie being another), Mickey Mouse entered the world of pop culture phenomena on November 18, 1928 — the day Steamboat Willie premiered at New York’s Colony Theatre.
This year will mark Mickey’s 85th birthday and Disney Consumer Products has decided to celebrate in a big way: by remaking the short that made Mickey. Titled Steamboat Willie Redux, it’s already been teased in DCP’s D23 Expo plans: ‘Celebrate the history and timelessness of the most cherished Disney character through this graphically re-interpreted mash-up of the pioneering 1928 cartoon short, Steamboat Willie.’
Dr. Doofenshmirtz is primed to take over Disney’s D23 Expo…and the Tri-State Area with his most wacky ‘-inator’ yet — ‘The Waffle-inator’ — a spectacular 40-foot high interactive game, combining physical and digital worlds — and simulated waffles — in an epic showdown to free Agent P from the clutches of Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Kids, tweens and families can hop aboard and wield the life-size invention to play ‘The Phineas and Ferb Waffle-inator Challenge,’ over three days at Disney’s D23 Expo, the ultimate event for Disney fans, at the Anaheim Convention Center, August 9-11.
Briefly appearing on the official D23 Expo website prior to its removal, Hewlett-Packard (the expo’s sorcerer sponsor) advertised that it will be bringing its augmented reality experience, Aurasma to the show.
Throughout the show floor, there will be several opportunities to experience the app, indicated by the Aurasma A-shaped icon. By scanning the icon, an ‘aura’ will be revealed through the app. According to the supplied description, ‘auras can be as simple as a video and a link to a web page or as complex as a lifelike 3D animation.’
Late last night, the D23 Expo schedule received a major overhaul with appearances, signings, panels and other events as well as more specific start — and more importantly — end times. While each attendee should carefully pour over the additions, here are just a few of the highlights we spotted:
- Disney Animation (Friday, Arena, 10 am) – allotted a whopping 2 1/2 hours. The Studios presentation (Saturday, Arena, 10:30 am) is given 2 hours.
- Pixar’s Angus MacLane Buzz Lightyear Small Fry action figures signing (Friday, Disney Living, 4:30 pm)
- Marty Sklar signing (Friday, Talent Round-Up, 4:15 pm)
According to a new article from Disney Insider, the Disney Parks pavilion at the upcoming D23 Expo will offer more than just a look back at Walt Disney Imagineering’s 60 year history.
Speaking with the show producer of the D23 Expo Disney Parks pavilion, Dave Fisher, the article mentions many things the pavilion will offer attendees, which include teasers of brand new attractions coming to Disney Parks based on Disney’s Star Wars property as well as Avatar. In addition, the pavilion will be play testing a new project Imagineering is working on titled ‘Adventure Trading Company.’ The pavilion will also offer two virtual ride-throughs using their pre-vis DISH (Digital Immersive Showroom) technology and a meet and greet with Captain America.
Be among the first to watch ABC’s most anticipated new fall series and animated specials and have a chance to learn the secrets behind how they were made. Fans will have those opportunities at the D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where all the worlds of Disney come together, August 9 – 11, at the Anaheim Convention Center.

A stunning display of exclusive gowns inspired by Disney’s iconic Princesses will make their U.S. debut at the D23 Expo inside the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit. These handcrafted designs by world-leading designers will be available for viewing each day of the event, August 9–11 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Included are works inspired by the individual stories of the Disney Princesses by Ralph & Russo (Tiana), Versace (Cinderella), Elie Saab (Aurora), Marchesa (Ariel), Escada (Jasmine), Missoni (Mulan), Roberto Cavalli (Pocahontas), Jenny Packham (Rapunzel), Valentino (Belle), and Oscar de la Renta (Snow White). The stunning dresses were first showcased in an ultra-glamorous set of window displays at Harrods, the luxury store in Knightsbridge, London, during the 2012 holiday season.
