Disney twenty-three magazine gives readers exclusive sneak previews of three of the most highly anticipated movies of the year in its all-new Summer issue, which premieres April 19 with three different covers to celebrate Disney-Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story 3.
D23 has recently announced new discount opportunities for its members at participating locations throughout North America as well as providing a sneak peek at one of the exclusive opportunities available for D23 Charter Members at the 2011 D23 Expo.
We previously told you about the existing discount opportunities in 2010 for members at Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort and select ESPN Zone locations across the country, as well as the opportunity to join a reunion of the original Mickey Mouse Club at the 2010 Hollywood Show. D23 Members will also receive special D23 pricing on tickets to the popular “Evening of Disney Rarities” at the Newport Beach Film Festival. Even Scrapblog has gotten into the act, offering special opportunities for D23 members.
It will be a magical trip down memory lane this month as the Hollywood Show hosts a reunion of beloved members of the original Mickey Mouse Club. Tommy Kirk, Tommy Cole, Cubby O’Brien, Doreen Tracy, Karen Pendleton, Bobby Burgess, Sharon Baird, David Stollery and Tim Considine will all be appearing at the event, which runs April 24 and 25 at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel & Convention Center (2500 North Hollywood Way Burbank, Calif.). James MacArthur (Swiss Family Robinson) and Steven R. Stevens (Walt Disney Presents: Annette) will also be in attendance!
D23 is proud to present the second film in our new “50 and Fabulous” screening series on the historic Walt Disney Studio Lot, honoring Disney movies celebrating their 50th anniversary. The delightful Pollyanna, starring Hayley Mills, will be screened inside the renovated, state-of-the-art, 400-seat Studio Theatre. The Theatre first screened Fantasia when it opened in 1940, and the craftsmanship and etched glass are inspired by the artistry of that groundbreaking film.
In the film, the orphaned Pollyanna (Hayley, who won an Academy Award® for her performance) goes to live with her wealthy, conservative Aunt Polly Harrington in a picturesque Vermont town. But eventually, Pollyanna is able to spread her optimistic, cheerful philosophy to her Aunt and eventually the entire town!
The weekend blossoms Saturday evening as guests gather at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa for a delicious beachside cookout. Enjoy a savory salad before diving into a grilled beef burger from the Evo Grill (veggie burgers too!) or chicken breast with Floridian citrus barbeque sauce glaze, served with all the fixings. Make sure to leave room for mouth-watering side dishes like creamy Southern-style cole slaw, slow-cooked vegetarian baked beans and Baked Mac ‘n’ Fine Cheeses. And don’t forget dessert! (We know we won’t!) Choose between Mickey Strawberry Shortcake or Hershey’s Chocolate S’mores Bread Pudding with Vanilla Crème Anglaise Sauce. Or enjoy both! During dinner, some of Disney’s most beloved characters will also hit the sand to visit with you.
Then sit back and watch a private viewing of the delightful Electrical Water Pageant as it sails by on the Seven Seas Lagoon. The Pageant — Disney’s longest-running parade, having launched in 1971 — boasts a bevy of colorful characters on barges illuminated with thousands of twinkling lights. Following the show, guests will be treated to an exclusive presentation about the creation of Walt Disney World’s fireworks spectaculars. And the night wouldn’t be complete without a private lakeside viewing of the Magic Kingdom’s beloved fireworks spectacular Wishes.
Sunday morning meet at 9 a.m. in the Grand Harbor Ballroom of Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts for a morning of special presentations, created just for D23 Members and their guests. After enjoying breakfast from the continental buffet including “A Spoonful of Sugar” breakfast scones with clotted cream and fresh jams and warm cinnamon loaf laced with fondant, “Mad Hatter” scrambled eggs (with assorted “Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum toppings”!), Snow (Egg) White Vegetable Frittata, Tink’s Yogurt Parfaits and classic Mickey Waffles fresh fruit toppings and pecans and whipped cream, grab a seat as Epcot Vice President Dan Cockrell will kick off the morning, giving insider insight into the new additions currently being built at Epcot — a new authentic Neapolitan pizzeria at Italy’s pavilion and expanded outdoor for Cantina de San Angel at the Mexico pavilion. Michael Jenner, WDW Park Events Content Development Operations Manager, will give an exclusive sneak peek at what’s to come at this fall’s Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, which will be celebrating its 15th year of cooking up delicious dishes for Disney guests! Eric Darden, Horticulture Manager of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, will present “The History and Behind the Scenes Secrets of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.” Then, Daniel Wasilick of Twinings Tea — one of the original partners at Epcot — will serve up something special just for guests, including a look at their refreshing teas that can only be found at Epcot. And of course, there will be some terrific surprises and gifts!
After a morning of enriching panels and presentations inside, it’s time to hit Epcot to see the International Flower & Garden Festival up close and personal. Guests will have several hours during the day to enjoy the park at their own pace.
That evening, get ready for some Flower Power as you head to the American Gardens Theatre to do the twist with Chubby Checker! D23 Members and their guests will enjoy reserved VIP seating for the concert. And after burning off some calories twisting the night away, it’s time for dessert! A selection of savory sweets — including some of Walt’s personal favorites — will be awaiting guests at Italy Isola, where everyone will also be able to enjoy private viewing of the Epcot signature spectacle, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.
Of course, no D23 event would be complete without some extra magic! We look forward to making once-in-a-lifetime memories over these two days of festivities.

It’s a milestone year for the Disneyland® Resort, and D23: The Official Community for Disney Fans is celebrating with the premiere of DESTINATION D, a brand-new, two-day event exclusively for D23 Members that illuminates Disney’s fascinating history.
D23 announced its latest members-only event on its first anniversary – capping a year in which Disney’s first-ever fan community grew to encompass tens of thousands of members from all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 countries worldwide.
The inaugural DESTINATION D, whose theme is “Disneyland ’55,” will be held this Sept. 24-25. DESTINATION D: Disneyland ’55 will take D23 Members on a journey through the design, creation, debut and magical history of the world’s first Disney theme park. The first DESTINATION D will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel.
DESTINATION D: Disneyland ’55 will offer two full days of special presentations, panels, screenings and guest speakers that let fans meet and talk with key figures in Disneyland’s history. Future DESTINATION D events will explore other important aspects of Disney’s creative legacy. Following its premiere in September, DESTINATION D will alternate annually with the enormously popular D23 EXPO.
The next D23 EXPO is set for Aug. 19-21, 2011, returning to the Anaheim Convention Center. Tickets for the 2011 D23 EXPO will go on sale Aug. 19 (one year in advance), with specially priced tickets available exclusively to D23 Members. In addition, D23 Charter Members will have access to a special Charter Member Lounge at the 2011 D23 EXPO, at no additional cost.
Last night, Disney’s D23 held a private after-hours event for members who attended its (slightly early) first anniversary party in which most of the existing Fantasyland was turned into a bounty of attractions, unique character meet and greet experiences and dessert party.
Aside from the party, there were two key events. The first of which was a buffet style dinner inside the Diamond Horseshoe in which D23 head Steven Clark offered a presentation concerning the first anniversary of the first official community for Disney fans.
Introduced by Walt Disney World ambassador Clay Shoemaker, Clark talked about his own personal experience as a fan prior to joining the company, attending an event in the early 90s in which many Disney legends (past, present and future) were in attendance and presented upcoming projects from The Walt Disney Company. He spoke of meeting Walt Disney Studios archivist Dave Smith whom he had recognized from Dave’s column in Disney Channel magazine. He spoke fondly of Smith’s warmth and how Smith had offered him a private tour of the Studios in Burbank. Clark recalled how he had encountered a custodian with a fanny pack at the Studios and watched as a squirrel ran up the custodian’s leg, took food out of the fanny pack and ran off, appearing to gesture a thank you along the way. It was then, Clark notes, he knew he ‘was at Disney.’ Clark then led the room in a toast saluting D23 and its members and both of their successes. He introduced several key members of the D23 group that were in attendance (and a couple that were not) and spoke of their contributions to the success of the club and the expo.
On reporting the D23 First Anniversary Party at Disneyland, which appears to uncharacteristically have problems selling to the point where multiple outlets are giving away free tickets, Geoff Boucher of the LA Times reveals that Disney has no current plans to host the D23 Expo this year.
Instead, according to the report, the event will be biennial, next occurring at some point in 2011. Still presumably in Anaheim.
Last year’s inaugural D23 Expo was officially announced on March 10 as part of the annual shareholders’ meeting / D23 announcement.
On March 10, D23 members will have the opportunity to attend a private one year anniversary event in the park after hours. D23 has already revealed some of the exciting opportunities guests will have, but we have recently learned of some of the other surprises D23 has in store including a lengthy guest list which includes:
- Imagineers Bob Gurr and Tony Baxter
- Actor Kevin Corcoran, from “Old Yeller,” “The Shaggy Dog” and “Swiss Family Robinson” (among others)
- Bill Farmer, Disney Legend and the voice of Goofy
- Margaret Kerry, the live-action model for Tinker Bell
