First Look: The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Goofy’s Flying School and More

After a recent update, the Blue Sky Cellar at Disney California Adventure re-opened today and we got a first look before the park opened at some of the new and exciting attractions coming to the Disneyland Resort within the next couple of years and here’s what we have learned of the upcoming additions:

[singlepic id=842 w=160 h=120 float=left]

Ariel’s Undersea Adventure – This attraction, which is slated to open in 2011 is also coming to the Magic Kingdom in 2012. Boarding what looks at first to be a clammobile from the Nemo & Friends attraction at Epcot (the vehicles here are simply called clamshells), guests actually enter the doorless vehicles from the sides (as the vehicle will be perpendicular to the guest at loading). A vehicle identified as Triton’s Chariot will be able to directly support a wheelchair. In the loading area will be a mural telling the story of The Little Mermaid and measuring in at an amazing 86 foot length and 12 foot height.

On display is a layout of the attraction at 1:96 scale and maps out all of the defined areas of the attraction. After boarding the vehicle (Scene 1): the guest will travel to see Scuttle and Sebastion (Scene 2); descend (Scene 3) into Ariel’s Grotto (Scene 4) where the guest will encounter an audio animatronic of Ariel holding a chest in her lap and a figure of a dancing couple as she sings ‘Part of Your World.’ According to the plans on display, Ariel will be capable of almost 30 separate functions including full control of her pupils (as well as blinking) and full mouth movement. Guests will then continue on to journey under the sea which includes new effects to enhance the sensation (Scene 5); Travel to Ursula’s Lair (Scene 6); ascend (Scene 7) to the ‘Kiss the Girl’ scene (Scene 8); journey on to Love’s First Kiss (Scene 9); and finally live Happily Ever After (Scene 10) before unloading (Scene 11).

Interestingly enough, the attraction’s ride system and vehicles are being constructed in Japan.

Goofy’s Sky School – A redo of Mulholland Madness and also expected to open in 2011, Goofy’s Sky School is based on the classic ‘how to’ cartoons featuring every one’s favorite talking dog. Although it looks like the billboards will remain (but re-themed), the facades will all be lowered to ground level, opening the attraction up. Guests will enter the queue through a ‘control tower’ designed to fit in with the early seaside attraction theming of Paradise Pier. The vehicles will also remain the same but will receive a paint and decal makeover as well as a hood ornament of sorts.

Red Car Trolley – Probably one of the more highly anticipated new attractions of the park makeover is the addition of the Red Car vehicle system for moving around the park. At a height of  10’4″ and approximate length of 26′, the ‘butterfly-wing’ grilled cars are reminiscent of their inspiration from the 1920s and 30s. They are battery powered despite the presence of overhead wires which exist only for show. As they are shown, the cars will seat 20 guests as well as one guest with a wheelchair/ECV in addition to the vehicle operator. There are four stops connecting Buena Vista Street with Hollywood (where tracks have already been embedded into the streets). A map shows proposed wig wag locations for the system: Buena Vista, Carthay Circle and Tower/Bugs. As a sidebar, concept art reveals that the vehicles (or perhaps specially designed ones) can serve as entertainment vehicles as the Omnibus has at Magic Kingdom for example.

Photo Gallery: ‘World of Color’ Blue Carpet Premiere and Show at Disneyland Resort

[singlepic id=860 w=160 h=120 float=left]

In an event fitting only for a spectacle such as the new World of Color at Disney California Adventure, Disneyland pulled out all the stops, inviting celebrities, media and lucky members of the viewing public to dine at a visual feast. On the scene to report for us was Kelly Noble, a first-time contributor for Stitch Kingdom.

A-Listers such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy came out to show their support along with their contemporaries which included comedic actor Jason Segel (who write and starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and is currently doing the same for The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever),Twilight star Peter Facinelli, Vanessa Hudgens, the kids from ABC’s Modern Family (along with Rico’s sister, actress Raini Rodriguez), Jamie Lee Curtis, John Stamos, Wayne Brady, Jodi Benson (known for being the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Barbie in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3), Geena Davis and Teri Hatcher, just to name but a few. Even former Bachelor Jake Pavelka walked the blue carpet with Vienna Girardi in tow.

Disney legends and celebrities strolled the great blue way too. On hand to celebrate was prolific composer and Disney legend Richard Sherman, Disney CEO and President Robert Iger and Disney Parks and Resorts President Tom Staggs.

After the jump is our extensive photo gallery of the preparation of the event as well as the blue carpet experience. We do recommend you use the PicLens link to view it as a complete slideshow, but feel free to browse the photos individually

Disneyland Details ‘World of Color’ FASTPASS, Merchandise and Dining Opportunities

With anticipation and excitement building for the June 11 premiere of the nighttime spectacular “World of Color” in Disney’s California Adventure park, several options are in place for guests who want to maximize their day of fun at the park and make plans to enjoy the show that night.

“World of Color” will be presented twice nightly throughout the Disneyland Resort “Summer Nightastic!” season, June 11 through Aug. 29 (except June 16-17 when Disney’s California Adventure will be closed for Grad Nights).  Guests will stand during the shows – at 9 and 10:15 p.m. – and they may bring strollers into the viewing area.

To see the show, guests will obtain a special FASTPASS for “World of Color” or they can select from several Dining and Picnic packages that include reserved viewing.

The FASTPASS for “World of Color” will be available each morning at the Grizzly River Run FASTPASS terminals.  Guests can insert their park tickets into the terminal to obtain a FASTPASS ticket for the show, and they will be assigned a specific show time.  As with other FASTPASS attractions, a limited number of passes are available for “World of Color.”  When all of the day’s “World of Color” FASTPASS allotment has been distributed, Grizzly River Run terminals will convert back to distributing the Grizzly River Run FASTPASS tickets.

Guests arriving before park opening to line up for the “World of Color” FASTPASS may park in the Pumba parking lot on Disney Way and, beginning at 7 a.m., gather at the Main Entrance to Disney’s California Adventure.  When Disney’s California Adventure opens to the public, guests lined up for FASTPASS will be walked into the park and over to the FASTPASS terminals.

In addition to the FASTPASS for “World of Color,” a selection of specially themed dining package options, which include reserved viewing, are available.

New Logo for California Adventure Theme Park Has Some Scratching Their Heads

Original logo for Disney's California Adventure (Top) and the new Disney California Adventure logo (bottom)Yesterday, Disney Parks revealed the new logo for its California Adventure theme park at the Disneyland Resort, which is famously undergoing some physical transformations as well.

Guests probably didn’t need it, but Disney helped point out a ‘name change’ as well. What once read as Disney’s (possessive), now reads as Disney. According to the comments on the blog as well as other places, guests are crying foul.

Disneyland Resort Launches Interactive Website for ‘World of Color’

In one of the more impressive demonstrations of the web so far by Disney Parks, Disneyland has launched a flash-based site to promote its new World of Color spectactular which opens at Disney’s California Adventure on June 11.

Found at (and a few other variations), the site quite realistically presents what could very well be the show in its entirety on your desktop, complete with music. Another option includes an interactive kaleidoscope mode which lets you play with an animated image of Sorcerer Mickey, allowing you to control size, color and even the intensity of the ripples in the water as you turn the virtual kaleidoscope.
